I think Terry Gilliam is a better director, to me tim burton tries to hard to be dark and he has had a few misses. Terry Gilliam is a much better director though many dont like his new films. I for one loved Tideland.

Terry Gilliam is the former python animation artist and he directed 12 monkeys, brazil, the fisher king, tideland, the brothers grim and time bandits and fear and loathing in las vegas among others. Im surprised you dont know of him.

Definitely Gilliam. Brazil and the Monty Python movies are masterpieces. I really hated Tideland though. I guess I just missed the "genius" of it that Gilliam had to point out before the movie even begins on DVD...

I love some of Burtons movies, but I would have to say Gilliam is the better director.

Tideland was great, as was 12 Monkeys.

First off there is an union on here with the same topic though it's done better here. I grew up watching Tim Burton so I must go with him. I will try looking for some of Terry's movies that have been recommended to me.

Here is my list of good movies directed by Tim Burton that I love to this day...

1. Beetlejuice

2. Batman

3. Edward Scissorhands

4. Batman Returns

5. Ed Wood

6. Mars Attacks!

7. Sleepy Hollow

8. Sweeney Todd

These are the ones I recommend to people though there are a couple that got mixed reactions that I do like. Nightmare Before Christmas was the single best movie not directed by Tim Burton I have ever seen. He still was a big part of the movie in fact enough to have his name in the title while watching it.

I will go on record to say Burton is my favorite director of all time since he's such a big inspiration for me.

Why bump thread?

Also, technically, Tim Burton didn't direct "The Nightmare Before Christmas."

Gilliam, by far. Tim Burton has never made anything that comes even close to the quality of Brazil. And if his recent films are anything to go by, he never will.

Touche. Granted, I was just too lazy to look up what, exactly, his role was, aside from Producer, if he had another part.

I haven't seen enough Gilliam movies to really say (though I greatly enjoyed Brazil and Twelve Monkeys), but Burton has made some solid movies before (and some bad ones as well, like Beetlejuice and Planet of the Apes...).

I don't get the love for "Batman" though either, the movie is pretty bad, especially when compared to The Dark Knight. Nolan was right when he said he thought the other Batman movies were just attempts at being stylish rather than trying to tell a good story.

Also didn't help that Burton didn't really care about the source material, either.

The only Terry Gilliam film I've even seen is 12 monkeys; pretty good film, but he hasn't had nearly as many hits as Burton; just off the top of my head I could name a dozen Tim Burton films that I love.

I only like Burton movies that are original to him, like Ed Wood, Scissorhands, and Big Fish. When his work is based on something leaning towards a reinterpretation, I never like it.

Gilliam is OK. Brazil was very good. I didn't like TideLand at all (watched it twice even), and i don't think 12 monkeys aged all that well.

I am skeptical of any new movie by either.

Burton is horribly overrated. The only good movie he's ever made was Ed Wood. The rest were either average or just plain bad, Scissorhands included. Gilliam on the other hand is extremely uneven. Brazil was amazing, 12 Monkeys was great, and Fear and Loathing was fantastic. Baron Munchausen, The Brother's Grimm and Time Bandits were less engaging.

Terry Gilliam. There's actually something to chew on in his films. Tim Burton was great circa Beetlejuice, but his recent stuff's all been sweet, crispy outer shell with a small nugget of poo in the centre.

This pretty much. I like some of Burton's stuff but his visual style is very particular and when it works it's spot on, but when it doesn't it comes across incredibly heavy-handed and irritating. Once Gilliam got over his French like obsession with exteme close-ups and fish-eye lenses, he proved himself to be a more fluid director. Too bad he's such a obsessive nutter at times though or he'd get more movies finished.

old thread is old. anyway, gilliam is the better director. his visuals tend to serve the film in thematic areas rather than stylistic or angsty ones. burton might run into one now and then like edward scissorhands, but his direction can get pretty shallow.

Pretty much this. Especially the part about Ed Wood being his only good film. Ed Wood is excellent, and seems to be the least known Burton film.
