http://chismetime.com/2008/11/elton-john-says-yes-on-prop-8/

"Sir Elton John has come forward saying he's also for Prop 8, which bans gay marriages. He believes gay couples should stick to civil unions rather than getting married.

Elton and his longtime partner David Furnish celebrated a civil union ceremony back in 2005. At the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NYC on Monday night, he said, "We're not married. Let's get that right. We have a civil partnership. I don't want to be married. I'm very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.""

Elton's got it right.

OMG, a famous guy believes something, so I should too! WRONG. Tom Cruise is a scientologist, guess I'd better go sign up. Anyway, isn't part of the problem that civil unions are being denied?

Sir Elton John is the spokesperson for the Gay community?

I'm pretty sure there are more Gay Celebrities against proposal 8, than for it.

Anyways, the last thing we need are useless laws like proposal 8.

Well, since Elton John has enough money to not have to worry about benefits or pensions, and his partner is not subject to immigration legalities, kudos to him. Melissa Etheridge is very angry, as is Ellen Degeneres. There. 2 famous gay people vs. 1.

I'm not saying anything about overriding opinions or anything like that - just posted this because I'm glad to see that there are people who can see the bigger picture and not make a fuss about "equality" when homo vs hetero unions will never be equal, because they are not the same.

Prop 8 is not about banning gays from having the same rights, its about keeping the definition of marriage the same as it has been for thousands of years. They can have the same benefits, just call it a civil union instead, which is logical because thats what it is. Seems to work just fine in the UK.

Anyway, I'm not up for defending my point again because I participated quite actively in the first big Prop 8 thread and ended up getting banned. :)

In almost a third of the states in the US, interracial marriage was illegal until 1967, at which point it was legalized by - you guessed it - a court ruling! No offense, but I have to laugh at the notion that banning gay marriage is preserving the time-honored definition of marriage when that very definition was changed only 40 years ago.

There has been no mention of tax status, hospital visitation rights or divorce in the definition of marriage going back thousands of years; I assume you want those constitutionally banned also?

When I got married a few years ago you got a paper you had to sign about the state's marriage laws.  They had the sections about  interracial marriage rules about specific groups there crossed out noting when they were changed.  The hate just oozed from those paragraphs.  The scary part was that the retraction dates didn't seem all that long ago.

I'm sorry, but the definition of marriage has been around much, much longer than America. I'm not talkin about some US court definition. I'm obviously referring to the time-honored traditional and historical definition. (ie. Man + Woman)

It's also a pain to change every mention of husband and wife to partner 1 and partner 2. People are obsessed with meaningless rights.

I belive that marriage is a sham but I also believe that if that's what someone wants to do, they should have the right to.

Please link to your church burning story. I heard about jackasses interrupting a service, but I am SUPER dubious that any church burnings have been linked to Prop 8.

>_> You're the one talking about "traditional" this and "traditional" that.

No, I'm no opponent of change as long as the change is both meaningful and necessary. Changing the definition of that word just so homosexuals can "feel" equal is not necessary. As I've stated countless times - gay "marriage" can never be equal to straight marriage simply because of the physical side of things. I mean, when I see a couple, I can tell straight away if they are a M/F couple or a M/M couple, right? So.... how are they equal? Equal means "the same". They are not the same.

Right, so black people can't be equal to white people, because you can tell right away if someone is black or white. Your reasoning is sloppy to the point of being tragicomic.

Lawl. I guess every relationship between a man and a woman is the same? Have you ever been in a relationship?

Drew Berrymore also says "War is like...wrong, you know? Its just like wrong killing people. War is like bad"

Hmmm I guess since she is famous, a celebrity, we should listen to her too.

As for Sir Elton's comments, technically he is right. But what he fails to consider is the social and practical applications. Lets look at job applications:

Usually you have two checkboxes: married, and single. What are they going to do now? Married, Civil Unioned, and Single? Youre opening people up to workplace discrimination, and with so many applications being done nonpersonally (online, email, snail mail, etc) it would be too easy for an employer to look at that checkbox and say "nope, not gonna hire a gay and get away with it.

Think outside the box a little, guys.

>_> You're the one talking about "traditional" this and "traditional" that.

Could say the same for interracial couples.

I wonder if 'Sir' Elton has any idea how difficult it is to even obatain a 'civil union'. Then, after jumping through about 27 different hoops, just how few rights these folks in a 'civil union' are entitled to.

I'm sure he is aware, as he has a civil partner.

[QUOTE="swizz-the-gamer"]Why should I care what Elton John thinks?Archon_

Cos he's gay

Not every homosexual wants to get married in a church, or married at all. But the choice should be there. And he is happy with civil unions, because over here, they have equal standing with marriage. In the US, civil unions don't have many of the benefits of marriage.
