Name your three favourite drummers. Any genre, any band/ group.Put the name of the band too. It's always cool to see who people will choose. Mine are: Neil Peart- Rush, David Garibaldi- Tower of Power and Stevie Wonder (yes, he plays drums).

Buddy Rich, Max Roach, "Tain" Watts (jazz drummers).  Even though I'm not overly fond of their music, Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band is one of the finest drummers the world has ever seen.

If you know anything about real drumming...no it doesn't. Take it from a former percussion major.

Nah, I just like hearing myself play...I write a lot intricant, complex stuff, and I think it's cool. Nothing wrong with that. And I do a lot of studio work for different bands, so I get the opportunity to critique and improve my styl3 all the time.

Ive also been playing for about 13 years and I've studied theory and composition, which is a good deal more than you can say for most of the drummers you might hear in the radio these days.

All I'm saying is that metal is completely stiff and lacking in feel and groove. It takes alot of skill, that I realize. But it lacks emotion and that all-important groove.

What about Bill Ward of Black Sabbath, or Dave Lombardo of Slayer? What about Vinnie Appice? Heck, even Joey Jordison makes Slipknot somewhat bearable. Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Vinnie Paul, Lars Ulrich, the guy from Mastodon, et.

I'm not saying metal has to be liked by everyone, but, yes, metal drummers do count, because there are PLENTY of good ones.

Joey Jordison is an amazing drummer. Slipknot is only meh though. I just started drumming about a year ago, and listening to some of Joey's drum solo's make me want to try just that much harder.

A flat, blanket statement of who's the best drummer doesn't mean much. jazz drumming is vastly different and requires far different skills then metal drumming, for instance. Unfortunetly, not being a fan of Jazz, I don't know any jazz drummers, so that's out for me. My favourite metal drummer would be Zbigniew "Inferno" Promiński from Polish band Behemoth, and my favourite rock drummer would be Neil Peart.

Woah, buddy...Mike Portnoy and especially Danny Carey are not metal drummers at all. They are progressive rock, which is way different. The things Danny plays, a lot of the other drummers you just mentioned wouldn't even be able to understand. There is so much theory behind the complex patterns and overlays that he write. Unfortunately, people like him don't get enough credit, because most "musicians" these days are completely ignorant to the technical aspects of playing.

By the way...Danny has a background playing jazz and African percussion.

Terry Bozzio and Part Two (Frank Zappa) [He is the one with the bigger drumset]

Tony Royster Jr. (Independent) [He was 12 years old then!]

Billy Kilson (Chris Botti) [IMO, one of the best of all time]

Tool is certainly not metal...maybe their earlier stuff to an extent, but there has been no resemblance of that since Lateralus, and Aenema too really. It was their first album which got them labeled as "metal" by some people. I can see how you would say Dream Theatre is something close to metal, but that's still a stretch. I'd prefer to throw the labels aside and just call them both progressive, because I think that's what counts.

He really is very talented for being able to drum while singing lead. Not many people do that.

I can only name Don Henley, but he's not really as good a drummer as Collins. For me, the whole idea would be like juggling balls and having a fluent conversation at the same time.

Buddy Rich - the god crazy speed.
Sean Reinert - Death, Cynic, Aghora, Gordian Knot, and recently, Aeon Spoke.  There are metal drummers and good metal drummers, he is the latter.  I haven't studied music as long as INDIFF3R3NT, but I know a good drummer when I hear one.
Danny Carey - duh.  To a certain point, I find him incredibly cheesy, but his playing makes me forget that.
Etienne Gallo - Augury, Negativa.  Another good metal drummer.

Keith moon and Ginger Baker are the only drummers who I've ever been interested in listening to. So, instead, I will name another drummer
Scott Asheton
I completely forgot about Beauford. He is a god. And Travis Barker is pretty much amazing.
