Guantanamo-inmates-kneel--008.jpg

"It's been exactly one hundred days since detainees at Guantanamo Bay camp started their hunger strike. The official number of inmates refusing food has been increasing on an almost daily basis and has reached at least one hundred

Around thirty hunger-strikers are being subjected to force-feeding a controversial tactic condemned by the UN and the international medical community as inhumane. And all those numbers are only likely to grow.

Because what started as a strike against mistreatment has turned into a battle against indefinite detention and Washington's broken promises to close the prison at the center of America's War on Terror."

My hats off to the courage these men are showing in that nasty torture centre! shame on Obama....

Good, if they all starve to death thats less wasted taxpayer money that their country wouldn't even dream of spending on American prisoners.

many of them are on the verge of death, lawyers hace spoken with some of the detainees, alot of them hardly have the strength to walk or talk, i think death is what they want, to Muslims they will be considered as martyrs.

Wish they could be deported to their respective countries to deal with - which actually want them. Ridiculous that the US continues to keep them in the name of human rights.

Wait.  Although he vowed to close Gitmo, did he promise to free the detainees?  I thought the plan was to close Gitmo, but move the detainees to a facility in Illinois.

If so, what's the difference really, other than geography?

Good point. The presence of gitmo isn't the only issue. Detaining the ones who are known to be innocent while refusing due process to the rest is the issue.

Take a history course. Due process is older than the United States; goes all the way back to the Magna Carta and it happens to be something that non-hypocrites believe in as just a general practice, not a legal privilege for just US citizens.

Well I know it doesn't mean shit to you because you're a hypocrite who's oblivious to immoral crimes committed by the state. Actually, you're worst. Those who are oblivious tend to say "eh" or "I don't care", where as you actually support this. So, you a hypocrite with no moral compass whatsoever.

We went over this the last time this very topic was posted about. As enemy combatants taken prisoner in a war zone, they can be held indefinitely.

There's things you can get away with legally in Cuba but not in the US. Exactly the reason gitmo is there in the first place.

Pretty divided in this.

In one direction, true justice should be served, and these men should be brough to trial. Make these people and their actions known. Why hide something unless you have something to hide.

The opposite direction, these men found their way into this prison. What terrible, dark circles must they have been a part of? Maybe no sympathy should be spared.

At the end of the day, I would have to say I'm 60/40 towards trial.

InEMplease

Based on "past incidents" the US has been caught with, such as Abu Ghraib, I wouldn't be shocked to find that there were a significantly large number of people who are innocent and/or have absolutely no evidence to begin with to hold them..

Gitmo is tough, the president probably thought it would be easy, but with no where else to put these prisoners, it has to stay open. It's kinda like the drone program. Yes, it's not the best option in the universe, but the alternative is to ignore possible threats to national security. I'm just glad I don't have to make these damned if you do, damned if you don't choices.

Do you really think that these people would last amoung our general prison population, criminals maybe lots of things, but even they have thing they'll stand up for. If you think that these soldiers did to these folks in Abu Griab was bad, just wait until Royce and Tyrone get a hold of them for being terrorists or jihadis.

:| Yep uh huh because sending them to a maximum security prison automatically means they are put in general public of the prison population .. Where the hell do you think Charlie Manson, dangerous gang members and other such people are put? Because it sure as hell isn't general populace.

So you want to isolate them in various super max prisons across the country? How does that do anything to change their situation? It's the exact same thing it is now.

I love how people seem to assume that the prisoners in Gitmo are really innocent....
