Tool is not on stage to entertain you, they are up there to teach you.

CaptainBeer

So, why I don't I go and buy the books that they read? Or is Tool like books on tape, except the spark notes version?

You should buy the books Tool reads. Most notibably Alex Grey's illustrations & biographies of these sociologists, psychologists & drugs. Look for books on the Pineal Gland, & dimethyltriptamine.

This a band or a cult?

Any band classified under the genre "Metal" is hardly influencial. Bands putting meaing behind their songs is nothing special, Tool has been influenced, not influencial....

Awesome band? Yeah definitely! Most influencial? No... They aren't the only band to have lyrics about "intelligent" things.

Being a favorite band does mean most influential. To be most influential one has to reach a wide audience....and Tool does not. As for whether they are pseudo or not....well I guess that depends on opinion, knowledge, and experience. So someone can certainly have a different idea than yourself. Who is to say who is right?

Tool sucks.imaps3fanboy

the only correct answer.

any band that must always cover some 'deep and intellectually stimulating' issue in a song reeks of pretentious [blank]

now judas priest, they are a mighty band.

But it does, because they use knowledge and books as their main motivation for performing. Insteadto justsell records

CaptainBeer

So do most other bands, I don't see what your point is.

Tool is not on stage to entertain you, they are up there to teach you.

there are so many bands who talk about real issues and address them, tool is not special in this sense. Most crust punk music is socially conscience, this doesn't make them influental though

20th and 21st? Are you nuts? The Beatles? Zeppelin? Nirvana? God Nirvana and some other grunge bands spawned a bunch of **** bands in the late 90s early 2000s. No. I like Tool but they're not mainstream, and whether you like it or not the mainstream bands will influence more people; now, HOW they influence is entirely different.

And by the way, Tool hates when his fans idolize or over analyze their music/lyrics. They're a solid band for sure, very consistent in their quality, and they also have matured from ranting about censorship, to writing and singing about The Great Schism in the middle ages. Unlike bands like say... Korn? who all the time write and sing about the same thing, being picked on, and I like Korn but I'm just giving an example :P

Tool is probably my favorite band and I agree they have been influential they have even influenced some of the most legendary metal bands like Dream Theater. But I don't know if they are THE most influential. And being influential is not necessarily a good thing.

I know alot of Anti-Pseudo-Intellectual people will deny it, but Tool's lyrics speak from the soul. They are not pseudo anything, in fact the people saying this probably listen to Poker Face.

Anyway, I'm going to list each Tool song & their meaning, so people can start believing in their music.

Prison Sex: Child Abuse

4 Degrees: Abortion

Hooker with a Penis - Selling Out

Schism: Tower of Babel

The Pot: Justice System

Vicarious: Media

Rosetta Stoned: DMT trip

Should I keep going? Once you know the meaning of the songs, you will appreciate them more.

CaptainBeer

how could you not list:

10,000 Days(Wings Pt. 2)- about Maynards mother, who was paralyzed for 27 years, which is roughly 10,000 days

-

oh and "The Pot" is about hypocrisy.

Tool is quite a talented band, I'm not a fan, but they have talent. They aren't the most influential band, though, seeing as Rush was writing deep lyrics far before Tool was even concieved.

Tool is a very talented band BUT they are not even close to the most influential. They are influential within their own genre of modern prog/art rock but the reason Tool can never be one of the most influential bandsis because it never bothered to go past its usual fanbase. As opposed to the other bands of the 20th/21st century.

Whether anyone likes it or not, the most influentail bands of the 20th was Nirvana, and by far the most influential band of the 21st is Radiohead.

So if bands have good meaning their influencial? to who? kids thinking of killing themselves?

EDIT: I didnt mean to sound like im trolling, its just that their not exactly the most popular band and to be influencial you need to be pretty damn big I assume.

It's an awesome band, but it's in no way the most influential band. Influence has nothing to do with how good you are.
