There are too many to name just five, but some of my favorites are Bergman, Hitchcock, Fellini, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, and the Coen Brothers.

Favorite is Steven Spielberg. No director has had such an impact on the industry as him.

He has done every thing from block busters (inventing the term), family clas sics (like ET), and emotional Oscar works (Schindler's list)

Kubrick is current?

SuperSaiyanLink

Yes that was rather a silly mistake. I was going to say "Current Interests" as I've been going back over his films lately, but then I decided to change it and sort of mashed the two things I was trying to list. I'm not good at lists as I'm not fond of making them as you see.

Ah, I see. I kind of thought that it may have been current interests. I'm going to have to check out Bong Joon-ho's filmography, loved The Host.

I would recommend Memories of Murder and Mother as they are both exceedingly good films.

And why do foreign directors get more credit simply because they're...foreign? I've seen mother is and it's just a mediocre movie.

Actually half of the directors I mention happen to be American or British. I just like who I like regardless of where they came from.

This list is not based on my favourite movies of theirs that they made but their general contribution to film and their style that I prefer.

  1. Stanley Kubrick
  2. Andrei Tarkovsky
  3. Ingmar Bergman
  4. David Lynch
  5. David Cronenburg

Other worthwhile mentions: Kurosawa (although I need to watch more that just two films of his), Herzog, Aronofsky, David Fincher, Danny Boyle, Nolan, Tarrantino and Spielberg.
