whats yours mine would probably be like this

1. BRITISH EMPIRE

this 1 is easy the British held stead over 1 quarter of the earths land and at the peak of its power accounted for 78% of the worlds GDP also in WW1 it amassed the biggest naval fleet the world has ever seen witch was said to be over 1000 ships strong a testament to this empires immense power .

2. ROMAN EMPIRE

very expansive and powerful they invented many great things and ruled over most of Europe help by the fact that it had brilliant leaders .

3. MOGLIAN ENPIRE

went from nothing to having the world at its feet its hard and sometimes savage military tactics saw it rule over a large part of the earth .

4. SPANISH EMPIRE

had the 2nd largest empire in terms of land mass after the British it had and armada of ships and defeated many enemies but its down fall was inevitable that it was around the same time as the British empire and not as powerful as others on the list .

5. FRENCH EMPIRE

France under napoleon bonaparte nearly ruled the whole of Europe and considering it was around like the Spanish at the same time as the British it had a great economic and military power but once again saw its down fall at the hands of the British .

You pretty much named all of them. I didn't know the French had such an expansive empire.

Do you think the US would qualify at some point? I mean these days you can't just go around counquering, so it's not like the US could establish an "empire" of sorts.

if it had been more assertive during the 1812 war, perhaps. but all it really took besides its current positions is Cuba and the Philippines.

So?

Empires have to fall sometime. At it's height the Persian Empire stretched from India to modern day Bulgaria, went as far North as Russia and as far South as the Egyptian border with Sudan.

Persia was a force to reckoned with in the Ancient world.

EDIT: There was a second Persian in later Roman history (Sassanid Empire). They kicked Rome's butt quite a few times and lasted 300 years after Western Rome had fallen.

 Sorry about that.

However as I mentioned in my edit there was a second Persian Empire that rivalled Rome in terms of military power (but not size).

And just so we clear this up, are we judging the power of empires by there size or by other things as well such as longevity?

It's amazing how great empires have become but small niches. Look at Greece, Persia, even Great Britian. None of them even begin to approach their former glory.

I'd say that Rome would actually beat USA at this. If there was no Roman Empire the world would be drastically different today. Most modern languages have their roots in Latin and the Latin code of law is still the basis for modern law today.

Rome>USA

1. Rome. They made the western world I live in, and the language I speak.

2.Mongolian. did for the east what Rome did to the west.

3. British. Ruled the world for 200 years with a tiny army and a skilled navy.

4. Spanish. forged the future of the world economy by conquering and pilfering the New World.

5. American. Currently the economic and military overlord of the world, uses ingenious capitalist system which creates loyalty out of self intrest.

You guys forgot Nazi Germany. Hitler had the most powerful army on earth and millions of followers. If Hitler weren't so racist, the Nazis probably would have won WWII. (I.E., hitler being racist and pregidous against russia)

WOW, you have that way wrong, British Empire 1st? Come on, congrats to Briton for taking Islands or huge sparsely populated landmasses with unorganized or unarmed populaces, or already weakened India. Lets talk about real Empires...

Persian Empire?

Alexandria and his empire, the guy who conquered it? (best leader and conquer in histroy)

His General Seleucid, the Seleucid empire?

The 1st French Empire? Conquered most of Europe under Napoleon.

But top comes Rome, it thought for its land against every kind of foe possible, lasted so longest and gave so much.

I think an island state that turned into a global superpower that lasted for centuries, covered 1/4 of the world's landmass, served as a center of education, boasted the world's most powerful military for most of its history, and single-handedly industrialized and modernized a good portion of the world deserves some credit.

I think a lifespan of an empire is a key factor in determining how powerful it was. Alexander defeated an empire that was already stagnating, and was clearly inept at making sure it was governed properly, since it disintegrated almost immediately after his death. It only lasted as long as he did. I also disagree with the Seleucids as one of the best ever. It was one of the more powerful of the successor kingdoms, but not by any means one of the most powerful ever.

Napoleonic france, as well as France under Louis XIV should be up there on the list, I agree.

This is how i'd rank the empires of the world.

1. British Empire

2.Roman Empire

3.Ottoman Empire

4. Napoleonic France

5. More debatable....but i'll go with the Mughal Empire

In terms of size, Rome was pretty small compared to the British Empire. The British Empire was larger, more powerful, and it connected and industrialized the world. Rome expanded through the mediterranean, which was impressive for its time, but it doesn't compare to Britain. Britain played a significant hand in creating the modern world.

To be honest, every empire was awesome. They started to suck towards the end and got owned by other empires. Its a cycle of ruling and conquering one another.

Rome has to be #1 in the technological aspects of the empires, as they did things we have trouble doing with computers. Some of the building and inventions they made were so ahead of its time. It made us look foolish when we went through the dark ages. Also, just imagion what they could've come up with if they didn't fall.

dude the British empire accounted for over 78% of the worlds wealth at its peak its the reason why most of the world speaks English Rome was mighty but it wasn't as mighty as the British the British basically handed napoleon his ass on a plate as well as the Spanish .

US is not imperialistic enough. We're not interested in colonizing new lands (or other people's old lands) at this point. We got our 50 and were content.

Most empires fall, but the british empire is taking a different route and being phased out.

Also does the Egyption empire count?
