[QUOTE="Darthric"]Explain to me how Britain comes higher than Rome?
MADNESS, no way on earth pal, not at all, nope, no way.:D
Seriously, tho Rome conquered more, gave more, lasted longer, left a longer legacy. Pluse was a small population compared to its empire.

dude the British empire accounted for over 78% of the worlds wealth at its peak its the reason why most of the world speaks English Rome was mighty but it wasn't as mighty as the British the British basically handed napoleon his ass on a plate as well as the Spanish .
This is the craziest thing i ever heard. Rome conquered how many civilizations? lasted 1000+ years and everything went through Rome.
Really, France was already defeated by the Russians, what the hell did Britain actually do? Waterloo? The Battle of Cannae? I think better. Compare what land Rome took Britain. Not crapy weak islands or huge empty landmasses were talking EMPIRES at war, fighting for survival. There was no sacking of Paris like Carthage, god alive, read Roman history pal, what land they took they had to fight every inch for, not tuning up and planting a flag on some random island, or fighting some Africans without guns.
Jeez from the Punic wars to the Macedonian wars, to the conquest of the Greek Cities, the wars against the Seleucid empire, the Ptolemaic Empire the wars with Patria? And Ever heard of Hannibal? Real wars of survival were though by men like this, nations of equal strength fighting to the death, to stop there City from being burned to the ground and every citizen killed.
What did Britain do? Shoot some natives with spears, or conquer already wreaked India or Arabia. Or colonize confused wakened people already destroyed by the illnesses and plague brought from Europe.
The spreading of civilization to France, Spain, Britain, to name a few Jeez the basic law practice of Europe still dates back to Roman law.
You must be joking. No way, Britain the best of the colonialists, but no way near Rome.
Lol all you people think that without Rome the West of today would not exist but you forget Andalus without them rediscovering the technology of the Romans and improving it and passing it on to the Europeans America would not exists and Europe would be ruled by barbarians and people would not know who the Romans were.

Owned.
The Arab Empire was pretty good. It may not have been the most powerful, but it accelerated in other areas; Science, math, social issues...lycrof
Yer alot of people seem to think Arab nations have always been the way they are today, but they were once very powerful.
None of them. The Greek Empire was the greatest of them all. I really am from Sparta. 'Cause you know, THIS IS GREECE!!!whats yours mine would probably be like this
1. BRITISH EMPIRE
this 1 is easy the British held stead over 1 quarter of the earths land and at the peak of its power accounted for 78% of the worlds GDP also in WW1 it amassed the biggest naval fleet the world has ever seen witch was said to be over 1000 ships strong a testament to this empires immense power .
2. ROMAN EMPIRE
very expansive and powerful they invented many great things and ruled over most of Europe help by the fact that it had brilliant leaders .
3. MOGLIAN ENPIRE
went from nothing to having the world at its feet its hard and sometimes savage military tactics saw it rule over a large part of the earth .
4. SPANISH EMPIRE
had the 2nd largest empire in terms of land mass after the British it had and armada of ships and defeated many enemies but its down fall was inevitable that it was around the same time as the British empire and not as powerful as others on the list .
5. FRENCH EMPIRE
France under napoleon bonaparte nearly ruled the whole of Europe and considering it was around like the Spanish at the same time as the British it had a great economic and military power but once again saw its down fall at the hands of the British .

I have one question. Do you think the British empire would have been capable of conquering the same land that Rome did?

well they owned more land but.....
If Napoleon beat Europe and Britain beat Napoleon.......
Egyptian and Chinese empire should be in the top 5.
Egyptian invented most of the stuff for Europeans and was the first strongest empire near Europe. Including
China had a huge military tactic, they invented the first gun, had the strongest military during the medievil times.
Don't forget about crossbows, gunpowder, Kung Fu strongest fighting technique during medievil times till now and going on, so they don't need armor.
They also had everything the needed like medicines, greatest trading system (silk road), silk, etc.

I could gather up a bunch of my friends, and we could conquer the lands that britain did. We just need some BB guns, and sling shots.
so why didnt any one else do it then

every empire wins by superior weapons, the romans fought men who where naked against the roman legions thats like british troops vs Zulus
i was going to say:
britsh
roman
greek
persian
and chinesse
but thats just my guess becasue i know thoose were all huge empires
do not forget ottoman empire because ottoman has most powerful soldiers in its ceuntry janissaries.they were the best warriors.ıf you want to write true you should dont write greek as of course you are affected from holywood films
1.mongolians (anyarmies couldnt stop theır move)
2.brıtısh
3.ottoman empire(suleyman the magnificent was good leader)
4.france (napoleon boneparte)
5.spanish empirejanissaryking
Alexander conquered an empire that reached India ,a short lived empire like the Mongol empire
[QUOTE="_KenKittyragi_"]I'm the only one to mention Nazi Germany!?alexmurray

6 years? Not really, it lasted 13 years.
Roman
Greek/Macedonain
British
Mongolian
Arab
Mongolian and Arab are at the bottom because I don't know too much about them
[QUOTE="alexmurray"][QUOTE="_KenKittyragi_"]I'm the only one to mention Nazi Germany!?jointed

The Nazis lasted in Germany for 13 years with no other land hardly an empire, its not until hitler started his European tour that Nazi Germany became an 'empire'
America is behaving a lot like an empire at the moment...Mr_sprinklesIf we wanted to be an Empire we would be one already. As for the original question I would have to say the Roman Empire was the greatest empire, they laid the foundation for everything we do today, their inventions were simply astounding.

Well, the Third Reich was larger than it's predessecor which was called "The German Empire".
British 23% of the worlds GDP, their why you speaking English, one of the bases of the US government covered 25% of the globe =36.6 million km²
Rome covered more than 60% of Europe the other base of the US government=5.9 million km²
the second colonial french empire coved almost all of north west Africa=12.5 million km²
The Mongol empire conquered most of asia but short lived=33.2 million km²
The Spanish empire coverd all but Brazil in south America and all but Belize in central America, big economy=19 million km²

You've missed the point, Britain had to fight other European nations, to get to the stage where they could fight the natives e.g numerous wars with the French and Dutch. It also fought in Europe (e.g waterloo). Plus they gave industry to the world, law and organised governments to most of the world.
Okay let's wrap this thing up with the help of wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_empires#Largest_empires_by_landmass
The largest empire of ancient times was the Achaemenid Persian Empire with 7.5 million km²
The largest empire of medieval times was the Mongolian Empire with 33.2 million km²
The largest empire of modern times was the British Empire with 36.6 million km²
But when looking at the longest-lasting empires it was the Byzantine Empire lasting 1123 years, closely followed by Venetian Empire lasting 1100 years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_empires#Less_than_a_Century_in_existence
To me the French Empire is the best there was, is, and will be unless the world finally unites.cyberdarkkid
the French empire was powerful from a military prospective but not as powerful as the British Empire in terms of GDP the British Empire made France look very weak in terms of overall wealth ;)
