Trump believes burning the US flag should warrant loss of citizenship or year in jail.

Sigh... to make it simple for you to understand.

  • I shouldnt have answered false on a calculus question (concerning theory). The answer was clearly true, and had I reread the question I would have known that.
  • I shouldn't have insulted that guy. It set off a very rocky relation between the two of us.
  • Trump shouldn't have made that flag burning comment. It is a stupid thing to say, and reflects poorly upon him.

Note how LJS did NOT say that he shouldn't have the right to say that. There is a huge difference between the two.

Sigh all you want. His own words are there to interpret. He doesn't want Trump to "whine" about freedoms. For the Homers of the board, that translates into wanting him to stay silent.

...are you serious?

People that burn the flag should probably be shot for safety reasons.

He can't do that. That goes against our first Amendment right, freedom of speech.

I don't care. When you are going to be PRESIDENT of the US you should uphold American rights and freedoms. Not whine about them. Though I think he does this so no pays attention to what the ass is actually doing.

On one hand you support free speech (flag burning) yet on the other hand you do not support free speech (Trump's opinions). Either you support protected free speech or you don't. Which is it?

I have to ask again because I do not believe I received an answer when asked a while back: Were you one of the PA guys who was practically guaranteeing a Trump loss in the state?

I don't have to support his dumb ass opinions and if you read correctly you'd see that I said a president elect should uphold the rights and freedoms and not whine about them. I didn't say he should be thrown in jail for doing it. I really wish you'd read posts before whining that someone is picking on trump.

Not in the least. I think presidents should value US values but I didn't say trump couldn't be an ass and complain about them. Why is this above the comprehension of trump supporters.

Of course you do not have to support his opinions but your own words prove you want him to remain silent and that is quite different then merely disagreeing with his opinion. I understand why you guys are salty though and it is not only because he has an opinion contrary to yours.

So let's get this clear..."wanting" him to remain silent somehow means that people don't support his right to say what he wants?

Well, by that logic, I hope you've never "wanted" to have sex with anyone. By your own logic, that would mean that you don't support people's right to deny consenting to having sex with you.

What you're saying right now is actually disturbing as hell. If we took your argument to its logical conclusion, then the mere fact that you want anything from anyone means that you think they don't have a right to have a choice in the matter. And I know that you know that's not how it works. I mean, if you want a job, then I should hope you realize that simply wanting a job doesn't entail believing that your prospective employer doesn't have the right to deny hiring you. If this kind of stuff doesn't work that way for you, then why the hell would you think it works like that for anyone else?

Yes, people often "want" other people to stop saying stupid shit. That's often the entire point of criticizing people when they say stupid shit. If you didn't "want" them to stop saying that stuff, then there wouldn't be any reason to criticize them for saying it. That's just how criticism works, but that has NEVER automatically meant that someone doesn't support the other person's RIGHT to do what they want.

This isn't "splitting hairs" here, you're just utterly wrong about this. I mean, just so wrong that it's frankly even shocking that you're saying this. You certainly "want" plenty of things and yet still support peoples' right to not give it to you, so how in the bloody hell can you turn around and say that people are against free speech just because they "want" Trump to stop saying stupid shit?

I don't mind it. Actually flag burning upsets me, however so do KKK rallies, and the BLM movement, but people take freedoms for granted. These freedoms absolutely must not be infringed upon if they are done peacefully and truthfully.

However there are some cases where I support a crackdown on people abusing the first ammendment. Making outright false statements, slander, publically insulting groups of people are all things that I do NOT support as protections by "free speech". The climate deniers are one example of free speech abusers who have outright lied and continued to do so without any proof or very flimsy straw man arguments. It has done damage to a very serious issue that will affect future generations of Americans and people worldwide. Is it ok for people to lie in that case when it infringes on liberties of our children and grandchildren? No...there should be a crackdown on these people once and for all.

Donald Trump uses his twitter account to make people focus on nonsense. Classic distraction technique.

The guy will basically just post whatever comes to mind and everyone goes nuts. I doubt he cares very much what people burn.

Yeah he's not draining the swamp and he's hiring wall street/big bankers for his posts. He's doing the absolute opposite of what that clown promised. And yes...he's trying to distract from that.

Since the leftists are shitting all over free speech, a valid question is whether we should simply play their game or stand up for righteous principles.

I respect Trump's choice.

Obama and the Dems had the most control over the House and Senate IN HISTORY for the first 2 years of his presidency.

And what the hell did everyone get out of it?

A completely broken health care system that is about to be repealed as soon as Trump gets sworn in.

Reps did that to the healthcare plan dude. Why is it so hard for conservatives to be honest? As for repealing it...why would anyone celebrate people losing healthcare? That's actually something horrible people would do. Oh right...deplorables. Never mind.

Do you even have a healthcare plan, slappy?

Premiums are shooting through the fucking roof. Me and the wife had a basic plan for the last 2 years that cost $135 a month.

You know what it's going to cost next year? $395 a month.

THAT'S why a huge percentage of the American population wants that bullshit scrapped.

ObamaCare has been a massive fail since its inception. Hell, they spent $5 billion on a website that still doesn't function properly.

I assume you are addressing Trump with that because beyond repealing it....he has NO plan for coverage for those people.

For many of the people on those plans they won't see the big premium jump.

I don't have to worry about healthcare for my family...it's through my employment and the cost is negligible. However....I don't want to see families without coverage because Trump is having a hissy fit.

The moment you protect the flag from being burned or desecrated is the exact moment the flag becomes meaningless as a symbol.

Flag burning is just a protest. Protecting the flag destroys it for good.

@frank_castle: The current plan is to repeal it in name only for three years because Republicans don't want to face the political consequences of actually repealing it.

The law is better as a punching bag when no one can see the effects of its removal.

Apparently not this election. Don't get your panties in a twist. It is what it is. Why so defensive? Trump supporter?

We should get this clear. Wanting to silence someone (which your pal would like to do) is an example of not supporting free speech. Review the comments of your comrade and watch where he started and how attempted to reconcile his stance once called on it.

Quite honestly, your lament is grasping. You mention something being disturbing. In the scope of this discussion I find nothing is more disturbing than someone claiming they support free speech yet wanting to silence another individual. Wanting to silence an individual for a dissenting opinion is not any different than wanting to stop someone from burning a flag. Disagreeing with someone's opinion is as American as anything but wanting the person to shut up because you disagree goes against the fabric of our foundation. Wanting someone to be quiet is an example of supporting free speech? Really guy?

I've had enough conversations with his supporters in real life and on here to know they are ignorant of politics, ignorant of facts and simply use his soundbites as facts.....in other words uneducated and I don't care what job they hold. Too bad if it makes you cry.

@Jacanuk Why don't we make other forms of speech illegal that the majority finds distasteful? Why not a constitiutional amendment against the buring of crosses, religious texts, etc? Why not make KKK style hatespeech illegal while we're at it? How about an amendment banning the Confederate Flag, which is an actual symbol of treason/sedition?

It's a fucking piece of fabric. It hurts absolutely nothing, aside from some feelings, to set it ablaze. It's also the the proper disposal method of a worn out flag, according to the VFW!

Sure but if the right make up a minority, then claiming that saying they're dumb is synonymous with saying "everyone but me is dumb" is factually false. The fact is the majority does not agree with the president, that doesn't change the fact that he's the president, but it invalidates any claims the right makes about representing the common people and being a majority silent or vocal.

They are not everyone, let alone a majority. Accept that and move on.

The majority of the country didn't support either candidate. There goes your talking point.

No expecting the incoming president to support the constitution is NOT wrong. He has to promise to do that anyway. Saying he shouldn't spout un-American pronouncements does not mean one is curtailing his free speech. It's saying he isn't acting presidential and he should do better. When are you going to wake up that electing someone with so little value to American rights is dangerous?

Why you cannot understand what is actually being said here is not surprising I guess. You either cannot or won't grasp the meaning.
