[QUOTE="wstfld"] Millions of people commute to Manhattan everyday for work. My boss goes to mass every Thursday after work and he lives in Jersey. wstfld

Okay...? There's a Church right there....Now if he was coming from New Jersey for the sole purpose of attending mass that would be different. But still, not everyone will do that, and there's already a Mosque 18 minutes away from this one.

You do know there are 10s of thousands of Muslims living in Manhattan, right?

And there's another Mosque 18 minutes away from this location. The largest concentration of Muslims is over a half an hour away from this location, what would make them go to this Mosque over the one they've already been attending?

The fact that it's called the "Ground Zero Mosque", when it's neither a Mosque, nor at Ground Zero, tells you exactly how far the media and political agitators have been allowed to run with this story. That's the reductive power of the mainstream media and the political process though.

[QUOTE="chathuranga"]Isn't the group that is trying to build the center near Ground Zero using Ground Zero as cheap publicity?SF_KiLLaMaN

its only getting publicity thanks to haters

They knew this would happen. Them saying that they didn't think there would be public backlash is just idiotic.

The community center was planned to be there before 9/11 even took place.. Furthermore there are Mosque's nearby already.. SO NO I would expect no one to know the amount of hostility this caused.

I have no idea, I'm not religious. My parents switched from one Catholic church to another to the Presbyterian church, and I know many other people switch churches as well. Its all horse **** to me, so I don't know. They like the wallpaper better?

This is a double standard if I ever heard one.. Most Christians literally have a few churches within a mile of them.. Now we expect the Mosque they have to go to is 20 minutes away? Furthermore this is a Community center first and foremost.. Because its far more convient.. Not to mention from what I have heard their places of worship are too small to fit the attendence.. But yet again this is a community center, there is only one floor for religious practices.. And it should not be called a Mosque.

I've offered to buy Trump out, but he says 10$ won't cut it.

In addition, they might have looked at the fact that the non-denominational chapel in the Pentagon dedicated to the victims of Flight 77 holds Islamic prayer services without incident. But apparently a community centre at an old Burlington Coat Factory is more insulting.

That's because Burlington Coat Factory is a very sacrosanct site.

But yet again this is a community center, there is only one floor for religious practices.. And it should not be called a Mosque.

sSubZerOo

Pretty much. A prayer space does not make the building a Mosque, just like it does not make the YMCA a Church, or a Jewish community centre a Synagogue.

In fact, since the centre is planning to include things like restaraunts, by Islamic definition it cannot possibly be a Mosque.

Not to mention its not going to be excluding any one regardless of religion, the fact of the matter is they will be allowing Christians and the like to be worshipping on that floor as well it seems.

Yeah, not that many: http://gonyc.about.com/od/churches/New_York_City_Churches.htm

It's an Islamic Community center, who do you think is going to be frequenting it the most after their Religious Ceremonies? Another mosque is located 18 minutes away from this proposed building site, the largest Muslim population is over a half an hour away.

And if you're arguing that Churches are closer it's because they were ALREADY there, they weren't just built.

I can't wait until they're finished building it and this whole thing blows over, never heard of such a large uproar about a community center building before.

Go to Google Maps. Type New York Churches. Witness the hundreds of red dots.

This is just the Catholic Churches. See the Manhattan list. With all the flavors of Christianity, I'm sure there are many many many more churches.
