I've noticed a great decline in the number of kids going door to door trick-or-treating over the last few years. This is because parents are beginning to take their kids to parking lots in order to collect candy from the backs of people's cars. What is this nonsense? That doesn't sound fun to me at all. What is wrong with so many parents these days, that they don't want their kids to have fun on Halloween anymore? We had about 10 kids at our place last year. When I have kids, I'm not taking them to a parking lot on Halloween, we're doing it the old fashioned way, door to door.

What are OT's thoughts on this new fangled activity?

I've never heard of this. We always get a bunch of kids on our street, as it's known to give out lots of candy. In fact, we usually run out of candy and end up having to get more, or turn off the front lights or something.

I've noticed less kids trick or treating but I've never heard of this trunk business.

I know exactly what you're talking about. They've had this in my area for ages, and I did it as a kid (along with walking house to house). I will say it gives you a ton more candy, because of how fast you can get to each one and how many trunks there are in close proximity.

Exactly my point. There's no fun in that, plus kids are told not to take candy from strangers in cars. Also, how do you decorate your car to make it scary? Part of the fun of Halloween was walking up to the door of a creepy house, or something jumping at you from out of the shadows.

Back in my day we had to risk hidden drugs and kidnappers to go trick or treating. These stupid kids are going to miss out on the thrill that is trick or treating on a possible maniacs door.
but seriously, trick or treating was awesome back when I was a kid and that was only about 6 years ago. I feel bad for these kids cos they are gonna miss out.
maybe they don't like their kids abducted, attacked, given poison/razerblade/drug ridden treats or suffer any other of the worries that careless parents have had to face.

My parents always checked the candy to make sure it's safe, and it's not like people can't give out poisoned/dangerous candy from their car. Also, a lot of hospitals will X-ray candy for free on Hallowene, or so I've heard.

Kids in my neighborhood Halloween the old-fashioned way.

This is the first time I have ever heard about this trunk-or-treating.

People put fog machines in their truck beds, fake cobwebs in their windows, etc.

it's pretty much impossible for trick-or-treating in my neighbourhood.... since it's downtown Toronto. It always rained in my last 4 years of Halloween. :( I used to have a stereo outside, connect that to my ipod, have death metal music on pause, and turn it up full volume when a kid comes. Me and my friends loved it, the kids loved it, and usually parents get so scared they run all the way down the driveway  fun times.

Parking lots with car trunks? Sounds like a prime child nabbing scenario. Jesus what is wrong with people? They suck the fun out of it because it's safer than going door to door? No no no! I grew up going door to door and it was a blast, people decorated their homes all fancy like and stuff, tons of stuff on the lawn, porch, and in the entryway. Some families went all out and did robotics and stuff all over the lawn with hands coming from graves and stuff, it's WAY more fun that way. You get to see creativity in pumpkins and home decoration, and you get to see some interesting costumes. I used to be out later than everyone else because I would check everything out, I took it all in as a kid and it was some of the best times I've ever had. The fun is being sucked out of a child's life nowadays. I am very disappointed in society these days with their fear of EVERYTHING. I know kids that NEVER get scrapes or anything because their parents are so over protective, an they wonder why their kid gets sick so often...well washing your hands 21 billion times a day is not good for you either. Cuts, scrapes, scars, broken bones are part of being a child, and it's a wonderful experience where you learn so much. Halloween lets you see just how much fun an evening can be. It's definitely one of the best things a child can experience.

i've never heard of anyone going to parking lots to get candy, but that sounds pretty stupid. the only reasons i can think of that parents would do that is 1) too lazy to actually take their kids to a good trick-or-treating spot and wait for them and stuff, and 2)they want to be able to more closely monitor what these adults are giving out to the kids, in case there's some creeper in some neighborhood giving out suspicious candy. which takes the fun out of halloween :(

yes, all the decorations is half the fun! i remember at one house we went to, one of the guys that lived there sat out on a chair in front of the door, he set super still and with his head down so that anyone walking up would think it's just a dummy in a chair, and when anyone got close he would scare them

The best houses are the ones that forgot to get candy. I got a can of peaches one year because they guys were drunk or high and completely unprepared for the trick-or-treaters.

If I ever move back into a city where people actually trick or treat I think I am going to take candy wrappers and put a rock in them. Wrapped up rocks are the way to go for Halloween treats

I don't know. The traditional door-to-door is much more exciting. The decorations are more elaborate. Walking around in the middle of the night. Going up to the door of strange people is always fun.

Trunk-or-treating is truly one of the stupidest things ever. All the churches around me basically have their congregations convinced that everyone around them is trying to rape their children. Nobody trick-or-treats anymore because the parents take their kids to the churches. I watched one once, and the poor kids are bored as hell.

I think people are just scared of letting their kids wander the neighborhoods at night, and they feel safer in a well-lit parking lot. But it's still stupid and ruins the halloween spirit. I thought the people who took their kids trick-or-treating in apartment buildings were lame, this just takes it to a whole nother level.

I lived outside of town so my parents would drive me to a friends neighborhood and then let us loose. Half the fun of Halloween is walking up to a creepy house and having something jump out at you. Screw hanging out in a parking lot, save that for the teenage years when someone has smuggled booze from home :P

I can understand the apartment building idea, especially if you have younger kids. A 3 year old won't really understand or appreciate the difference, and it lets them have their little bt of fun for the night, and most importantly, it prepares them for real, door to door trick or treating.

If you live in a place where houses are far apart then that is understandable. But now, if this is happening in the parking lot of some store somewhere surrounded by neighborhoods with houses only 20 feet apart from each other.... then this is plain stupid. Parents are truelly too protective. Shame on you guys not trusting your neighbors (if you just moved to that neighbor hood than it is understandable). Sure parents might be concerned about the if the candy their kids are getting is safe, but dont ruin the fun just because of that! Just do this; let your kids trick or treat in your neighborhood, and when they come back, check their candy. See? Its that easy (too bad some parents are too lazy to this)

Yeah a toddler or pre-school age kid is perfectly fine, but I've seen people escorting their 10 and 12 year olds through apartments that they don't even live in. There's an area of town with about a dozen apartment buildings in it, and people take their nearly teenage kids to each one in a car, stop outside and let them do the building and have a smoke while they're inside. That's just odd and not halloweeny at all to me.

Whaaaaaaat is this bull I have never heard of this. Well, except for the decline in people handing out candy, but this is just too big of a break from the holiday's tradition. This is why I make sure we hand out big gobs of (good) candy to try and make up for the overall increasing lack.

I've seen it. They also have malls in which they distribute candy in each of the shops. Destroys all of the fun of Halloween.... Trunk or Treating is the worst though.

I've never heard of that, I've heard of parents taking their kids to malls to do their trick or treating. I've notice over the past few years there's not many door to door trick or treaters anymore. I use to get over 100 kids for years, then as the years went on now I get maybe 15 kids.

maybe they don't like their kids abducted, attacked, given poison/razerblade/drug ridden treats or suffer any other of the worries that careless parents have had to face.buldog300
dont call a parent letting there child trick or treat careless just dont it makes you sound really dumb...

I do this, but it's not just I open my trunk and you take the candy. I have a Scion xB, we open the back and set up our canopy that we use for tailgating, drop thick sheets over the sides (not the back, that would just be child-molester creepy). For the inside; there is another sheet hanging from just behind the back seat (so you can see inside the front) a smoke machine is positioned in the back along with the bowl of candy. That is just the basic set-up, now for decorations. I have a Freddy costume stuffed with old news papers and such to give a little scare to older kids by tugging on rigged strings (fishing line) to move different limbs of Freddy's body, this and a remote contolled stereo with Freddy phrases is perfect for control from underneath my canopy. Also, in the canopy there is a scarecrow I made, the top-half is connected to a string; upon releasing the string he kind of surprises any unsuspecting teen with a big hug.

That's just my set-up, some are as creative if not more; but for the most part it's just people standing there with there trunks open...easy candy target, mine you have to work for.
