Watchmen, All Star Superman, Batman Year One, Dark Knight Returns, Sandman. Literally the best 5 "mainstream" comics you can imagine.

Y: The Last Man. Actually, look up author Brian Vaughan. +1 to all the ones mentioned above (except for All Star Superman, will have to look into that one). If you have a character or superhero in mind, go ahead and name him/her, surely people will have recommendation on issues or series to read.

I'll try them out. Do you guys use your tablets to read them or do you actually buy the comic?

I used to buy them retail, but I've gone mostly digital now on my tablet. I tend to wrinkle/crease issues. Graphic novels are more durable, which is what I used to get a lot of as I didn't (and still don't) really follow ongoing series - or I'd at least wait for the volume/compendium realese.

Now I'm using ComiXology . It's actually quite good. It has this feature where it zooms in automatically to each panel instead of having to move it around (like PDF files) which is annoying. Price is quite steep, but if you can wait for sales, then it's ok. I say at least give it a go, there's a few free comics there.

DC recently rebooted everything so you could start with any of their stuff.

Marvel has more or less done the same thing.

And Peter Parker just died so you can jump into the all new Spiderman as well.

Walking Dead is pretty damn popular. Y the Last Man is getting a movie at some point, its about the last man on earth and his monkey.

Other stuff like Peter Panzerfaust which is Peter Pan and the Lost Boys as resistance fighters during world war 2...

I got a tablet for Christmas and I downloaded that app which is nice, but I might look at some free comics as well to get a start on it.

Invincible is probably my favorite superhero comic coming out today. It's got some killer fight scenes and some things that wouldn't be allowed at the big two unless they were a part of DC's vertigo or marvel's icon. GotG (Guardians of the Globe) is a nice team book to accompany Invincible with that is only on issue 4 so it just started. Yeah, Invincible is close to issue 100, but I got all the trades (the HC's would probably be better cause they have more issues in them) and blew through it, and it takes me about 40 mins to read a comic book, which is a long time.

Hellboy just started "Hellboy in Hell", 1 issue out so far so you can try that.

Other series like Saga (sci-fi mixed with fantasy), Skullkickers (fantasy/comedy), The Goon (sci-fi/fantasy/comedy), Manhattan Projects (alternate history/sci-fi/fantasy).

If you want to go with mainstream, big two, comics I would say go straight to All-Star Superman and Batman Year One. They are arguably the two things you should read regardless of what you think of Frank Miller. Marvel, uh, I never really liked them that much. They have some cool concepts and characters but if you want to read them, I would recommend Secret Wars from the 80's by Jim Shooter. Other than that, you just kinda gotta pick up what you like, it's not like a movie or normal book. You aren't meant to start at the very beginning, comic writers know this, they aren't gonna refernce something that happened 50 years ago and make it the big major plot point that you must know and if you don't you should brun your book and die.

It's kind of sad the only comic I read is the Sonic the Hedgehog comic. I started reading it when I was a kid and never quit. It's a continuation off of the Sat-AM storyline (for anyone who remember that show) and has a really developed mythos. It's just fascinating to read.

You should pick up Matt Fraction's "Hawkeye". It's only up to issue #6, and it's the best comic out right now. It's funny, it's smart, it's exciting, it's beautiful--it's everything a comic book should be.

I know most people don't give a crap about Hawkeye, neither did I. But this book is just too good to pass up. Get it.

Sweetbackhair

Subscribe to Marvel, it's 60$ a year and they give you ALL their comics since the first issue of Fantastic Four, in chronological order.

Depends what you're interested in really... Batman, Spider-man, Superman, X-MEN? Something less mainstream? Superheroes? Non-superheroes? Watchmen is a classic but some people are turned off by the vintage art. You might want to start with something a little more modern to settle into comics and then work your way back. Anything Alan Moore is pretty safe for content. For a more modern writer, Geoff John's is quite popular right now... Comes down to personal opinion but he's usual safe to start with. Also, if you're into superheroes, but want something outside the realm of Marvel and DC Classics, I would recommend Invincible.

I've started getting into comic books recently too. Some of my favorites so far that you can just jump into and get a solid story without having to wait for new issues are:

Y - The Last Man - Original post apocalyptic story about the last man on Earth living in an all female world. Funny but also emotional at times; the last issue made me cry. Series is complete at 60 issues.

American Vampire - Not your typical vampire story. Centers around a vampire named Skinner Sweet who is the first of a new species of vampire. Spans from the 1850's to the 1950's with real world history being mixed into the story. Currently at 33 issues with two 5 issue mini-series that tie into the main story.

The Walking Dead - Zombie apocalypse. Need I say more? Started reading it because I like the show and I wasn't dissapointed. Good thing about the comic is you get more character development than the show and it seems the show is more of an alternate version, so reading the comic won't necessarily spoil everything. Currently at 105! issues.

Powers - My favorite of the bunch. Set in a world where super powers are common and accepted by society. Heroes and villians are like our celebrities. The main characters are two homicide detectives who specialize in power related killings. But there's so much more to this series that that. The story is a deep, spanning, interconnected masterpiece. Currently at 78 issues across 3 volumes.

The Unwritten - I'm reading this series right now and it's pretty good. Similar style to Y - The Last Man, centers around the secret world of classic, famous literature and how it's more powerful than we think. Currently at 40? issues and set to wrap up soon I think.

The latest run of Uncanny X-Force was quite good in my opinion. And at 35 issues there's plenty of reading.

All the Suggestions here are great and you can find this comics in Comixology. I personally suggest the following though

Batman :- Scott Snyder
Swamp Thing :- Scott Snyder and Animal Man :- Jeff Lemire ( If you are into Horror Comics )
Aquaman :- Geoff Johns ( No seriously this one of the best comic book out there give it a shot you will not regret it )
Green Lantern :- Geoff Johns

From Marvel ( you are in luck they rebooted thier comics a 1 month ago and you can start new though some books they havent rebooted )

DareDevil :- Mark Waid ( Though you have to hunt for Collection or TPB for these as this is one of the comis they havent rebooted)
All New Xmen :- Brian Michael Bendis

Aveners :- Jonathan Hickman

Captian America :- Rick Remember

Hope that helps but no matter what you decide you read it is a good time to jump though for the DC and Marvel Reboots and for finding the old comics Digitally .

If you want to get into older Marvel Comic Books, there are these awesome collections of classic comics that were re-released in the form of actual books called Marvel Masterworks. They're actually really cool. Prices range from $20 paperback -$35/40 for hardback. I currently own some of the classic Captain America comic books in the Masterworks and I love them. Also if you're into any Adventure Time or Regular Show, there are some pretty good independent comic book series' by KaBoom Comics on both of those shows. Both very good comic books. And finally, there are some awesome new Moon Knight, Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and Carnage comic books out to check out. Another cool thing is newer comic books almost all include a digital version for download that you can read through an app on your smart phone or tablet.

--Cheers

I started by reading different Avenger comics and the "Thanos Imperative". After reading those I then turned to then individual comics of characters from those books that I enjoyed.

No kidding. It takes less effort to simply make a new ones instead of digging through pages of old threads to bump it. Not that hard, folks.
