Trying to get "into" metal. Can you recommend some bands?

Hello. I am looking to find some new tunes to listen to. Somebody recommended metal, but left it at that. No bands. No songs. So, what to listen to?

A little about what I like:

Journey

Bruce Springstein

Genesis

The Rolling Stones

Just about all classic rock, really.

I really like female leads. Linda Perry in Four Non-blondes is a favorite. If you could recommend to female metal bands that would be cool. :)

I don't really care for the so called "death metal" having had an opportunity to hear that on an odd show called "metalacolypse." Although the Mermaider song was humourous, the I-can-barely-make-out-what-your-saying-please-stop-eating-the-mic sound is really not my cuppa.

So far, I have come across Nightwish, and Flyleaf.

I like the sound, am I in the right direction?

I greatly appreciate all help.

Many thanks, friends!

The obvious choice is Mettalica, but Killswitch Engage and Bullet for my Valentine are the bands that got me into metal so I recomend them too.

When I say the female thing I was gonna suggest Flyleaf until I say you already got them. Try Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold (from city of evil and up since you prob. won't like the screaming). Many others too. Your are def. in the right direction.

Dragonforce (just don't listen to their live performances :P )

Hammerfall

Black Sabbath (pretty much invented metal music)

Guns n' Roses (not that good, but still classic)

Lacuna Coil, Sonata Arctica (male lead but he sounds like the lead of Deep Purple according to my dad), Korpiklaani...

Lacuna Coil - Closer

Sonata Arctica - Don't Say a Word

Korpiklaani - Karhunkaatolaulu

A good starting place would be power metal, it seems (skip Dragonfarce). Also, some older stuff like Judas Priest or Black Sabbath.

But, really, just go on MySpace and look at some bands that intrigue you...

You only need to know that Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Judas Priest, Slayer and AC/DC are the best bands ever.

If you like Genesis, try Dream Theater each member is a god, an then you put them together. It's amazing.

System of a Down, Serj Tankian, Slipknot, Nightwish is very good

Why would you recommend these? 3/4 of these aren't even accessible, and then you add Dragonfarce on top of it? What is the obsession with this band? All they are is stupid tricks and effects repeated throughout every song they've ever created.

Some albums that are essential:

Master of Puppets by Metallica

MAP

Paranoid by Black Sabbath

The Big P

Cowboys from Hell by Pantera

COH. The heaviest album EVER.

Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden

NOTB

Those are the four greatest metal albums, ever, in my opinion. Continue with those bands, and you can't go wrong. (Except with Metallica's St. Anger. Stay away!) Welcome to the metal club. :D

Why wouldn't they be considered Metal? Listen to Valley of the Damned, Fury of the Storm, Operation Ground and Pount, Through the Fire and Flames... etc.

So you talk about mainstream then list metallica? All those bands you listed are super generic and offer nothing new, so are going to stay small so the kids can listen to them feeling tough. Ignorance is great.

I think he was referring to their first few albums, back when they were violence incarnate(copyrighted, Zen Man 2008 ). Their new album is going to be closer to their roots as well.

Maybe back in the 80s they were new and innovative, but these days there are hundreds of bands that do what they do, and better.

The OP specifically asked for non-cookie-cutter vocals. That means all metalcore/death metal/viking metal/most ridiculously dumb power metal (I'm looking specifically at Dragonforce)/black metal, etc., is out. Dream Theater is kinda iffy. Depends on how proggy you like your music. If your favorite Genesis song was "Land of Confusion", then Dream Theater is not gonna cut it. There's a ****load of stoner metal you'd probably like if you're into the classic rock stuff: Orange Goblin, Kyuss, Electric Wizard. And trying to find good metal bands with a female vocalist is hard. Nightwish is alright, but most other 'symphonic metal' (as it's fans like to call it) is not very good. A lot of prog-death bands like to have a female co-singer for operatic passages and stuff.

The only 'metal' band I can really recommend that is proggy at all and has a female vocalist is Aghora.

ever heard a nile song? or at least looked at a guitar tab from them?

You are hopeless. I never said they weren't influential. Sure they are. If you want to listen to the same rehashed bands for 80 years go for it. I prefer to move ahead.

Lamb of God is groove-influence metalcore.... :| And Arch Enemy definitely isn't metalcore. BTW, Metalcore isn't a bad genre, it's just filled with repetitive and generic **** that bring down the quality of bands like Killswitch Engage (old), HORSE the Band, Converge, Botch, Unearth, etc.

Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy cd. Perfection.

As far as female fronted bands go, they've already been listed.

A lot of talented bands have been listed, but you won't be able to appreciate them until you've been listening to metal for awhile so that you KNOW what to listen for. Case in point is Nile. I thought they were okay when I first got into metal. After learning to play guitar 5 years ago and broadened my musical horizons, I can now listen to them and be utterly blown away by the technicality and...well, sheer amazingness (I know, not a word but oh well) that they put into their music.

[QUOTE="JC346"]Metallica, SlipKnoT, Bullet for my Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Pantera, and if you want screaming --> As I Lay DyingPowerFiend
Slipknot, Bullet for my Valentine, and Avenged Sevenfold aren't metal.

Listen to Avenged Sevenfold's second cd. Listen to Heretic Anthem by SlipKnoT. Scream Aim Fire by BFMV sounds like Metallica IMO.

This goes out to anyone that doesn't believe that Bullet for my Valentine is metal.

well, dude, you gotta watch out for metal"core" bands....like Lamb of God, Bullet for My valentine, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall.....those mainstream bands SUCK and will make you weird

listen to slayer, nile, monstrosity, megadeth, metallica, amon amarth, evil incarnate, carcass, terrorizer, napalm death, bolt thrower, exodus...all of these bands are great

gasmaskman

So you talk about mainstream then list metallica? All those bands you listed are super generic and offer nothing new, so are going to stay small so the kids can listen to them feeling tough. Ignorance is great.

Please, tell me that is a joke. Carcass? Napalm Death? Slayer?

Maybe back in the 80s they were new and innovative, but these days there are hundreds of bands that do what they do, and better.

So, a band is influential in the creation of many genres of extreme metal, then you discredit them because bands have come along, stole their idea, and made it better?

I could not have said it better myself......

without these early bands, there would be no "metalcore".
