I'm going to assume most people before me recommended a bunch of ****** metalcore and advise you not to check it out. Instead take your pick from this sizable list.

Kreator, Therion, Wintersun, Ensiferum, Sodom, Destruction, Demilich, Darkthrone, Electric Wizard, Boris, Immortal, Mayhem, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Carpathian Forest, Thorns, Emperor, Cathedral, !T.O.O.H.!, Napalm Death, Kampfar, Protected Illusion, Cynic, Atheist, Nocturnus, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Watchtower, Mekong Delta, Necrophagist, Gorguts, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Kronos, Hammerfall, Entombed, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Candlemass, Keelhaul, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, Sigh, Amon Amarth, Lykathea Aflame, Terrorizer, Phlebotomized, Suffocation, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Swarrrm, Death,

gasmaskman

LOL He said "no death metal."

I think your entire list is against anything he wanted... (though it is a great list lol)

What can I say. I'm a rebel:P

Truth be told, to say get into metal encompasses the whole genre and one could not truly get into metal if they didn't at least like one band from every subgenre. Well that's how I view things. Opinions sure are crazy.

Go with the hardcore metal bands:
Hannah Montana, Avril Lavigne, Sum41, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, Rihanna, 50 Cent, Souljah Boy, maybe, if you are feeling super hardcore, you can go for Lazy Town.

I was trying to find another band, besides Nightwish, with female vocals. Who is the best on you list?? Thanks.

Well if you are looking for similar to Nightwish, Epica and After Forever, primarily. As well Sirenia, Penumbra, The Sins of Thy Beloved, are similar but they are goth rather than symphonic so naturally darker sounding. Draconian has soem good female voacals but they have male growl more often than not. Lacuna Coil is a great band for beginer metal, and Octavia Sperati is similar but heavier. The vocalist for Arkona is amazing IMO.

Just because no-one else has mentioned them yet, try out Within Temptation and The Sounds. The Sounds aren't metal, but still a great rock band with a good female lead. And, just because no-one has mentioned it, try out the new Nightwish album. The old Nightwish was great, but I'm really digging the new vocallist. And if you want clean vocals, try out some HIM, 69 Eyes, Negative, and Coheed and Cambria. Mainly because anything I would have recommended has been mentioned already

Now I' going to wait for the 'Those bands are s**t, they're not real metal!' comments. I could care less what those people would think. I like to think I listen to (and like) a wide spectrum of rock/metal bands, from stuff like HIM through to your Children of Bodoms, In Flames, Cradle of Filths and beyond. I call it all rock, and I love pretty much all of it...

Metallica, Megadeth Iron Maiden. Or if you're after something heavier go for the likes of Slayer or Pantera.

You should listen to Kyuss... metal with a groove. 50 Million Year Trip, Green Machine, Demon Cleaner, Freedom Run, Space Cadet, and Fatso Forgotso should get you started. Other than that, look to the past. You can't go wrong with Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden. I also like Judas Priest and a few others. I think power metal is absolute garbage and hate anything remotely similar to Dragonforce.

Nevermore

Metallica (Since playing this song in Guitar Hero 3 it has become one of my all-time favs. BTW stay away from new Metallica)

Megadeth

Avenged Sevenfold

The Human Abstract (Personal fav of mine that deserves more attention)

The Fall of Troy (Yes these guys are metal, math metal to be exact. This song doesn't have the screaming alot of their other stuff has)

Protest the Hero (Old, new)

Killswitch Engage (Old, New)

Machine Head

Nightrage (Old, New)

Opeth (They have stuff where he only sings rather than growls. This is just an amazing band that you should give a chance too)

Soilwork

Static-X

System of a Down (One of my first metal bands)

Drowning Pool (Sinner album only. Their singer died right after they made the album and he is irreplaceable...)

Mudvayne

That should keep ya busy, lol. PM me if you are interested in any of the bands. Sorry I can't help with the female leads part. I really can't think of any good metal bands led by females and no I don't care for Arch Enemy....

FYI, the thing about metal is if its your thing then it is something that will likely come with time. I have gradually gone from listening to nothing but nu-metal (Limp Bizkit and Drowning Pool) to listening to mostly thrash, math, and melodic death metal. I actually hated Opeth at first and then they became one of my fav bands.

Thechaninator

Thanks for taking the time to link all those

FACT. Metal really isn't something you just jump right into anyway, at least for me it wasn't. I started out with classic rock and over time I just craved a heavier sound. The screaming/growling vocals didn't appeal to me either, but I've come to appreciate them when used appropriately. Just keep listening to the stuff you like right now, and maybe try to find something a little heavier that you like. Then after that find something a little heavier and so on..

Start off with Metallica and Led Zepplin and move your way up to Rammstein and Children of Bodom. Got to get used to the classics before you can appreciate the new.

Could try Jack Off Jill (Their second album Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers is pretty heavy) and Kittie. Kittie has harsher vocals on some songs, but I'm sure you could find a few songs you like. Both of those bands have female vocals, by the way.

Megan McCauley is pretty good. She's not really "metal", but she is a female rock artist with a killer voice.

Black Tide is talented. Their lead singer is only 15, and he sounds killer!

Chevelle is pretty sick. I've been a fan of them for a long time.

Dir en Grey is awesome. but their music is all in Japanese. If you like foreign stuff or like melody, you'll love these guys. (Especially thei recent album Withering to Death.)

Dope is pretty sick. I love their album Life so much

ugh, half my post didn't go through.

tool is awesome. I saw them live and they rock.

Kittie is great. I wouldn't call them "Death metal" that's more like Cradle of filth, but there is a little growling.

Opeth is amazing. They are considered "death metal" but there is a LOT OF CLEAN VOCALS. And it's one of those few bands that use growling in moderation and where it is appreciated. After you develop more of a craving for heavier music, then these guys will be perfect for you. For now, though, check out the song Harvest and the song The Drapery Falls on the Blackwater Park cd. Harvest is totally clean vocals (meaning that there is no screaming or growling) and The Drapery Falls has a little bit, but it's a great example of how the growling is where it is appreciated. At least now, anyway. Their older stuff like Still Life is a lot heavier, so for now you may want to stay away from that.

I've got a couple in mind. Here's three of my favorite metal bands, and a few good songs by them.

Metallica - Enter Sandman, One, For Whom The Bell Tolls

Disturbed - Stricken, Down With The Sickness

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills, The Number of the Beast, The Trooper

Sora529

Disturbed have some far better stuff than stricken.

Mastodon is a good band for people digging something a little lighter.-Sniper99-

Their new stuff is the only light stuff, really. All their previous stuff like Remission is heavier (and Leviathan, but it was slightly less heavy).

Also, BFMV is metalcore, and I would consider them metal. Just because they're popular doesn't mean they aren't metal...Damn, glam metal is still "metal," though I wouldn't necessarily recommend anything (besides Dokken, and older Motley Crue) in that area because it's entirely terrible.

What I think though is that metalcore gets a bad rap because of their catchy choruses and mainly mainstream bands (the previously mentioned BFMV, and bands like Atreyu) bringing it down. When you take bands like Converge, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, Architects, Between the Buried and Me, (Jesse-era) Killswitch Engage, Shai Hulud, and Protest the Hero, people come to expect **** music when they're labeled as "metalcore" but in reality these are all amazing and talented bands. I hate saying I like metalcore the most because then people give me **** about my music taste, when in reality these bands are each incredibly talented and are actually good to listen to. Don't be so harsh on that so-called "mallcore" because there's always the below-the-surface stuff that's full of talent.
