Yes, we all know, the 90's was better, blah blah [insert segement about quality of music]. I know how this threads going to go down...
the only things i actually look forward to watching are either superjail, robot chicken, anything seth mcfarlin crapped out(considering its a national comodity by now) or anything that might peak my interest on history or science channels, other then that its a thousand channels but nothing to watch. cant stand tv sitcoms anymore all they do is jerk you off with a cliffhanger before every commercial break just to keep you from changing the channel.

Which sitcoms have you seen with cliffhangers?
TV today kicks ass. It's way better than the trash from the past. Sure, the cartoons may not be up to par, but Jersey Shore is better than them all by far.

all of them around the season premier and finale's, and not that i show more interest in between either, i have this thing against immersion of tv storylines and low production values.
We have more channels, so naturally the networks will spew out more crap. There are many undeniably good shows, but a majority are on premium channels it seems.
There are lots of good shows on currently. However, I have never been a fan of the reality TV craze. So I agree that stuff is crappy - IMO.
the only people who think tv today sucks and that it was better in the 90s are people with terrible taste in TV. TV is the best its ever beenmems_1224That is as overblown a statement as the opposite statement. There is good tv now. It doesn't blow away previous eras, or get blown away.

No, I would definitely say that TV pre-90s was pretty much entirely **** with a few notable exceptions. The 90s was where we finally got some shows that approached movies in terms of production values and more importantly writing quality, and since 2000 things have been much better simply thanks to HBO, Showtime, AMC, etc. Most of TV still sucks though, especially reality TV which, unfortunately, is about half of what's on these days, at least.
^^ Yeah, totally disregard shows like:
Weeds
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones
Modern Family
Psych
etc.

I think that some things (i.e. classic TV) seem worse to us now because of changes to our tastes as consumers. You watch a show like Family Ties, and it's painful. But it was the **** back in the 80s. I don't think that is a result of the show itself being garbage, but rather a change in ourselves.
most of the shows I watch on TV end up being reruns of older shows since that's mainly what's on TV. Other than that most of what I watch is from the BBC, so I'd say modern American TV is kind of weak. I know for sci-fi it's basically impossible to find any good American sci-fi (ok, I do sort of like Firefly, but would it have killed the writers to learn to write proper dialouge to go with the stories?). For TV comedy I can't stand what we have in the US, it just feels so restricted compared to British comedy. Don't even get me started on the American version of Coupling, that was just pathetic.
I pretty much watch history as my main channel anymore, at least their reality tv shows are sort of decent (I must admit I'm a very big fan of American Pickers), but their version of Top Gear is just horrible.
I really havn't been able to get into an American TV series in quite some time, and I've pretty much have just given up.
*Note, I don't have premium channels like Starz and Showtime, so their shows may be better. From what I saw of Torchwood on Starz it seems like they are better than normal cable TV, though that may be because it started on the BBC and still has some of those same elements that made it good there (especially the children of earth mini-series).
Yeah, it sucks. ALL of the networks suck. Including the premium network. Let's face it, Televised features are beyondobsolete. It's all been done before, it's all of the same old stuff. The 1970's-1990's WAS the most inovative time for movie and theater. Now we just have remakes & knock offs and their greastest inovations are HD, 3D and eccess of special effects that aren't fool anyone. We know a pile of **** when we see one.
TV networks exist for one reason. So their sponsors can show us thousands of commercials regarding**** we don't want buy. And the remote control lets us completely evade it. The downside I only catch bits and pieces of shows because once the commercial break comes I flip to another show or turn the TV off.
Why can't the sponsors just put a 20 second thing that say
"Try/buy This, that, this, whatever and this and that and some other whatever else" Fine I'll consider it, but quit wasting my time. Which brings up the age question. "Why do people who self-sponsor their televisionprogram still get commercials? Who get's AMCvia outside sponsor?Who get's AMC without paying for it? Ive been thinking of calling up Kraft foods to tell them they should pay the cable bill. Which they already, but we're all stupid enough to pay for it again. And this must be why people steal cable. I mean afterall it's not fairthat ALL of the sponsors give the cable networks money to air their commercials yet not everyone gets to see those commercials.
Behold...our saviors from the mediocrity that is modern television.
(Hey, compared to what's on TV now, this is a welcome return.)
