Headline News stopped doing their 30-minute news spans 24/7 and now are just another cable news network with horrible Court-TV like investigative shows.

The Learning Channel has stopped showing interesting things like Ancient History Tuesdays and Connections and the like and are now another DIY/Health channel.

History Channel often broadcast shows that would be more appropriate on Discovery (same company) such as Modern Marvels and often don't seem to have any real focus on history at all.

Discovery Channel seems flooded with occupation-based reality shows. Snore. Gimme some documentaries, dangit!

A&E is now basically the 'Detective Network'. They used to have such awesome shows.

No music videos on MTV. Ever.

VH1 is 'The Celeb Channel'.

Sci Fi channel makes such campy B-movie like originals.

The CW and TBS are basically the same dang channel. And TBS doesn't have the night-long B-movie fests like they used to. I miss my cavewomen. :(

TNT is pure syndication so you already see all it's shows on other channels.

G4 what in the heck? Cops, ninjas and cheaters all day (sure it SOUNDS cool...)? On a tech channel?

Sure, there's a few good shows: Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi, Star Trek:TNG Reruns on various channels, a half-handful of adult swim shows, Histories 'Battles BC' was interesting but it's only on once a week, and so on. It's just rare that something's on worth watching.

The 90's were great for TV: Beavis&Butthead, Ren&Stimpy, 120 Minutes, X-Files, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Sliders, My So-Called Life (though it didn't last long, Ancient Warriors and Connections, A&E had awesome biography shows and original productions, Headline News was always a report-based network on 30 minute blocks, MTV still showed mostly music videos, and the list goes on and on.

/rant

Seriously, what's on TV that's worth paying attention to? Do you think TV has gone downhill this decade? Or am I just becoming a cynical old man?

Futurama is awesome, but the new ones have been so few and so slow in coming. South Park I find to be trying too hard to be offensive to be funny. Used to like it, and the WoW episode was awesome, but they just seem to be trying to step on peoples toes these days just for the hell of it.

And yeah I watched all those sitcoms in the 90's. The original Cosby Show was the best of them all. Ahhh...don't get me started on 80's TV...so awesome!

I don't watch tv because of the commercials. Having to wait week to week to watch a show? Waste of time

I think there are probably more good shows than ever, but there are so many more stations now that there is far more worthless garbage to sift through to figure out what they are. Maybe the actual problem is tyranny of choice. ;)

Do you think TV has gone downhill this decade?

br0kenrabbit

The 90's had most of the important to pop-culture shows like Buffy, The X-Files, The Simpsons, Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier but I'd take HBO's 5 major shows (The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Rome) over anything the 90's produced.

Wow, I regularly watch quite a number of shows. I bought an external 1TB drive for my DVR because I was constantly running out of room. Maybe I'm just easily entertained? 24 Battlestar Galactica Chuck Cities of the Underworld Cops Deadliest Catch Dexter Dirty Jobs Fringe Heroes Ice Road Truckers Jacked: Auto Theft Task Force Knight Rider Lie To Me Life Man vs. Wild Mythbusters Shadow Force South Park Star Wars: The Clone Wars Storm Chasers Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles The Universe True Blood UFO Hunters (PS: I've had to replace the DVR several times so I already had the list typed up)

There does seem to be much more filler out there but with DVR and VoD, I consolidate all my favorite shows into sat morning and just keep the TV off for the rest of the week.

lol yeah, wtf are they thinking? MTV used to be great. Now it's just TV without the M... I only watch about 2 hours of TV a day, I get bored of it. Unless there's a movie on that I really want to watch.

:D It won't win any awards, but something about it brings me back every week. Is it the car, the women, the action, the humor, nostalgia... all of those things maybe.

I agree,it's either stupid reality-TV shows (like Super Sweet 16) or sitcoms that aren't funny at all,or 10 year old movies.I just watch Friends re-run and Tom & Jerry occasionally.

Heores NBA Basketball(The good games are usually Thurs and Sunday, and since I have two home teams(Lakers and Clippers) I get double the games they show on the local channels Around the Horn+PTI power hour. Those are the only shows I consicously make an effort to watch. And I will always watch King of the Hill or Venture Bros if they are on.

I watch The Simpsons regularly, though the newer episodes have mostly been crud. Futurama repeats are also on the agenda (the oldies are far better than these newer movie releases). I watch Malcolm in the Middle from time to time, and also rugby when it's on. Spongebob Squarepants and Drake and Josh also.
