Twitter rape threat to  female MPs: Police demand social network tackles abuse by 'trolls'

Internet trolls have issued rape and death threats against two woman MPs, it emerged last night.

Stella Creasy was told on Twitter she would be tracked down and raped, with the terrifying threat: Shall we meet near your house?

She was targeted because she had backed feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez who suffered similarly vile online messages.

The second MP, Claire Perry, received death threats relating to her fight against pornography on the internet. In other developments:

  • A senior police chief said Twitter had not done enough to tackle trolls;
  • More than 64,000 people called for the networking service to act against abuse;
  • A man arrested over allegedly harassing Miss Criado-Perez was bailed;
  • TV historian Mary Beard won a grovelling apology from a troll.

When Miss Creasy spoke out in support a Twitter user, calling himself @rapey1, threatened: I will rape you tomorrow at 9pm. Shall we meet near your house?

Another said: You better watch your back. Im gonna rape you at 8pm and put the video all over the internet.

Source.

These people are soiling the good name of trolls everywhere. Trolling is meant to be done with a mischievous nature and if possible some humour even if no one else but the troll gets it. These people are just sick in the head and if there were a troll guild their membership would be revoked.

Twitter's always seemed to have this problem and it's led to some ridiculous things in the past like people being arrested for what they wrote on twitter. With its growing role it does need some defined rules (currently there are almost none, it's perfectly okay to post porn on twitter for example), more straightforward way to report abuse and protect its users. Failing that, if it wishes to remain as rule-free as it is, that must be accompanied by efforts to inform users that they will be exposed to offensive posts and if they object to that then they shouldn't use the site. That being said things like threats and harassment (what the media seems to think trolling is, not the more mild behaviour it really is) should always be a matter for the law and not twitter staff.

I don't see anything ridiculous about that, provided that what was written was illegal. Talking specifically about rape/death threats, I think that stuff totally warrants an arrest. If it's illegal to say in person or over the phone or in a letter, then it should be illegal to say online.

I don't understand why people can't just get off the damn thing, I know its not a popular view but cyber bullying is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If someone is harrassing you on a social media site and you can't take it then turn off your computer and go about your life. It's easy for someone to talk crap behind a computer screen. If it bothers you either block them or just stop using it completely.

Seriously. Everyone who's ever been "cyber-bullied" needs to just delete their fvcking twitter accounts and stop being a slave to social media. Go live in the real world, and cope with the fact that nobody gives a shit about what you've doing all day, and you don't need to post your every move on the internet.

Yeah that certainly is and always should be a matter for the law. I'm talking more about people using their twitter accounts to broadcast hateful opinions which, as disgusting as they are, are not being directed at another person (eg by tagging other people in the tweets). Though the other problem with twitter is thanks to their trending pages and other people being able to retweet things, once you post something you have no control over where it ends up. So while their site has no rules it also has no clear way for people to avoid offensive content that they may not want to see.

Another attempt at making the sites responsible for what the users put up there. This is just another way to get to piracy, they've been trying to do these things for years.

I dunno. The whole story is a stretch for me. You can block people. In my opinion Twitter is fine as it is, and the people who get seriously hurt by it are not used to the internet, or don't know how to deal with it. Perhaps it would be a good idea for schools (or parents, but do they even exist today?) to explain to children about the differences between the internet and reallife conversation and such, and how much you should put up with before finding a better site or blocking the person.

I'm inclined to believe threatening rape/murder is a different animal then simple trolling and should be treated differently as well. If I walked up to a woman and told her I was going to rape her tomorrow at her home I would think there would be some legal ramifications for that action, and don't see why saying it online would make that any different.

Are you suggesting that behavior that would otherwise be illegal should be legal so long as it's done online? If so, I don't agree with that at all. If making rape/death threats in "real life" is illegal, then making rape/death threats online should be illegal. In any case, someone will bring up the idea that online threats are okay because they happen all the time and hardly anyone ever follows through on them, which is a $hitty point. The whole reason it happens is because of the widespread notion that when you're online the rules of "real life" don't apply, and that's exactly the problem.

Just the fact that someone would spend the time to write about raping and killing someone is a good sign that they aren't legitimate. A real predator would be much more intimate and not hide behind Twitter. Suffice to say, if the police looked into and possibly arrested everyone who wrote stuff like that on the internet, they would need an unfeasable amount of manpower, and it would result in a massive amount of arrests of dumb teenagers that aren't worth the trouble.

It is about time we extended common sense laws already in place for telephone communications to internet communications. It is ridiculous that drug dealers can send texts to each other about where to meet up for a buy, and the cops and apply to the courts to pull those records, but email is not allowed. It is ridiculous that calling a person up every day and threatening to kill them can allow the victim to take out a restraining order but relentless emails and other messages are fair game. The internet is not anonymous any more and people should be able to use it freely and reasonably without being subjected to this crap.

Why wouldn't it be the exact same regardless of whether or not the threat was made on the internet? Someone calling in a bomb threat to a school is almost certainly full of $hit, but you still can't ignore the threat. If someone threatens to kill you after a game of poker, they're almost certainly full of $hit as well, but it still needs to be taken seriously. It's not likely, but people HAVE been killed over online disputes.

"Someone said something mean to me on the internet, let's arrest them"

what would happen if one of those people actually went though w/ what they wrote... and people knew about it a week in advance because they tweeted about it? there'd be a ---tstorm about why wasn't anything done... if a person called you up on the phone and threatened you, you could seek legal protection. this is no different.

There is a difference between saying something and planning something out.  Look at what happened to that kid playing league of legends

Getting raped in jail because he said something online, that seems just.

laws are funny little things sometimes. i could call you on the phone and threaten you repeatedly and be arrested for it despite having no intention of actually doing it. the threat is reason enough. does it make sense that a dips--t kid got jailed for being an idiot online? no, but those are the laws. best thing to do is not be a retard on the internet and you'll likely not run into any problems :wink:

Think there is a minor difference between getting into a sensationalist argument about a game And Creating an account called "rapey1" in order to harass and threaten a random woman
