that's hard to say. while i do have more American bands than British bands in my playlist, i have to admit that the more revolutionary bands are British. I listen to industrial, gothic rock, New wave, and other similar genres. the 70's and 80's saw many British bands come into these genres that were, and still are prominant in the scene. Even though there were plenty of good American bands too. Notable bands for these musical styles from the UK include Depeche mode, Joy division/New order, Alien sex fiend, Clock DVA, Fields of the Nephilim, the Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Ausgang, and Nosferatu.
The US wins in a complete landslide in genres like jazz, hip-hop, funk, and soul.... and these happen to also be my favorite genres.

Despite the greatest band of all time coming from the UK I've got to go with the US because the rest of my top five is from the States.

Yup this. The fact that the U.S was the birthplace of some of the best musicians in Jazz, R&B, Funk, and Soul puts the U.S at the top....
US wins for me. UK doesn't produce too many thrash metal bands, where the States have. Plus Alice in Chains and Soundgarden are some the States, and they kick ass.

agree
I only listen to british music (The Clash, Led Zepplin, King Crimson, Radiohead, Stone Roses,Oasis, Blur,Manic Street Preachers, The Coral, Arctic Monkeys)
can't think of many american bands that go above mediocre imo, but it also depends what genre I guess
US wins, by far.
The best of Jazz musicians come from there and my favourite band is from the US, too.
Not to undermine the UK, though, it's a very musically diverse country.
The USA has: Alice In Chains, Counting Crows, Incubus, Manchester Orchestra (they're from Georgia actually!), Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silversun Pickups, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Sublime andTool.
The Uk has: Bloc Party, Muse, Placebo and The Verve.
So i gotta go with the USA
I prefer the UK for bands which is most of the stuff i listen too.
Oasis, Biffy Clyro, Blur, Coldplay, Kasabian, Muse, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree (who are amazing), as well as all the older bands which were more influential, so The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. Also Queen had some cool stuff.
The US has some cool stuff too obviously, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, NIN (my brother is a big fan, so ill add it).
Electronic/House/Pop wise, pretty even between the America and Europe. I love Daft Punk (French) and Deadmau5 (Canadian) for example
