[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]I've been to Vienna and Luxembourg is far more prosperous economically per capita. It's also reflected visually. Aljosa23

Yeah visiting a city makes you an expert on it. /sarcasm

Well I can look at the GDP per capita to find out economic prosperity.

I've been to both and can easily say Luxembourg, visually, appeared more prosperous. It is a safe and extremely wealthy city with steady tourism, culture, etc.

Not sure what other strange criteria the UN created.

[QUOTE="Aljosa23"]

[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]They have the second highest GDP per capita in the world.

Storm_Marine

Okay. The actual report mentions a lot of different categories to how they came to their conclusion so I don't think it's as simple as a few here think.

A bunch of stuff that has no business being in a report on prosperity.

Health and happines are completely legit indicators in a report on prosperity.

Why do all americans not like the UN?tenaka2
No real idea. Even in the UK, which is sceptical of international organisations in general, respect the UN, and it does a lot of good in the world - guess what though? You just don't hear about it. All you ever hear about the UN are talks about talks - not the actual aid they bring to countries to help development, proper consideration of policies, facilitating discussions to promote peace and so on. I'd rather have the UN than nothing at all, in which case, what's to stop countries resorting to war at first instance? At least talk it out through the UN. And of course, ironically, the UN was co-founded by the USA, especially under strong support from Woodrow Wilson... so for Americans to be laughing at something they helped to create is indeed quite strange.

America is ranked 8th in the world in GDP per capita but the economy has tons of issues so that's not really a good indicator. Smaller cities would definitely have a low crime rate. I'd like to go to Luxembourg but you're not exactly persauding me to believe it should be #1.

Of course not. And criticising is the easy part... unless there's a credible alternative put forward, I'd like to keep the UN where it is. Nothing wrong with striving towards world peace, even if it's not achievable in the foreseeable future.

You have to get into really subjective stuff like 'happiness' to not even include Luxembourg.

I totally agree. I find that completely insulting to the very principles of the UN as well. We can only hope it gets better in time.

Like I said you have to add a lot of silly subjective stuff to exclude cities like Luxembourgh from the list.

'Happiness' to someone in Moscow might be a bottle of Vodka while it's a $100,000 sports car in Luxembourg. There is no set standard for something silly like that. Did they let a 5 year old create some of the criteria?

Where I live may not be on the list. But, I prefer little traffic, quiet neighborhoods with wide intervals between neighbors (the nearest one is farther down the road), low cost of meats, veggies and other produce, than any of those cities on that list.

The hell is this list based upon? The UN is full of Sh!t. their lists are utter turd and people only value them because ITS TEH UN!!!!

Just like they constantly rate Norway has the best country in the world (Human Developement Index), which Norwegians take way too much pride in.

I didn't know the best country in the world that has the most developed society has factually;

the worst education of any western country

the worst roads in Europe (even polan/ukraine/latvia make our roads look bad)

the worst train system in europe (actually out of a test with 45 european countries, only Albania and Turkey had worse than Norway)

The second oldest car park in Europe after Finland (11.2 years.. UK = youngest with 6 years)

The worst statistics of failing in school / poorest math performance in Europe

the world selection of food, few shops etc, nothing to do, even third world countries have cooler stuff. etc

Semi-UN rant.

This. Seoul should be higher on that list. It seems more prosperous and technologically advanced than Athens or Barcelona or Budapest. Maybe it's just me.

hardly, don't overestimate South Korea, on many development scales, the country does not rank higher than Spain.

Luxembourg City is a city within the country, and far more affluent than anything on that list as well.

KC_Hokie

How so?

They have the second highest GDP per capita in the world.

technically, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Liechtenstein and Monaco are richer, but all of the states I mention tend to get left out, except Qatar, which the first place of the source that says Luxembourg is #2.

Isn't Luxembourg just a tax haven for the uber wealthyAbbeten
That's Monaco. In Luxembourg, you have to pay tax, but its not a lot, ESPECIALLY compared to wages!!

if your income is only 25,000 you pay between: 1% and 8% tax

If your income is 50,000 you pay between: 8% and 20% tax

if your income is 100,000 you pay between: 21% and 31% tax

if your income is 200,000 you pay between: 28% and 33% tax

it depends on your type of citizenship.

1 Euro = 1.2944 U.S. dollars.

so 100,000 is $129 440 USD.. if you earn nearly $130K in Luxembroug, you'll pay 21-31% of that in tax. Still better than paying 40% tax like in Norway for example :p

But if you "only" earn 50,000 = $64 720 you only pay between 8% and 20% tax, which is ridiculously low. in Norway, that income would be around 33%.

200,000 = about $260,000 the reaches the tax limit of 33%. if you earn more you still only pay 33%

[QUOTE="Mozelleple112"]

The hell is this list based upon? The UN is full of Sh!t. their lists are utter turd and people only value them because ITS TEH UN!!!!

Just like they constantly rate Norway has the best country in the world (Human Developement Index), which Norwegians take way too much pride in.

I didn't know the best country in the world that has the most developed society has factually;

the worst education of any western country

the worst roads in Europe (even polan/ukraine/latvia make our roads look bad)

the worst train system in europe (actually out of a test with 45 european countries, only Albania and Turkey had worse than Norway)

Ncsoftlover

No country in the world other than Norway can claim this, this is not just UN giving them handjobs. Or if you can find one ,point me to that country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Gender_Gap_Report Norway : 2nd

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Failed_States_Index Norway: 5th

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita Norway: 3rd

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legatum_Prosperity_Index Norway: 1st

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index Norway: 6th

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Index Norway: 1st

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index Norway: 1st

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Freedom_Index Norway: 1st

All those sound just irrelevant / not true / what our government likes to tell us. The points I made still stand and are MUCH more important to the citizens actually living in the country. Do I care if the press freedom is #1? Our politicians / press keep lying to us all the time anyways so I fail to see how it being #1 affects us. Nominally, the GDP per capita may be #3, but our actual purchasing power is #8 in Europe behind Switzerland, UK, Netherlands, Germanys, Denmark, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein. and we're behind Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Singapore, Monaco, etc as well. When looking at FACTUAL numbers, thinngs that actually can be measured, like how much income the average person has, compared to how much a basket full of goods cost, Norway doesn't rank nearly as high as these handjob lists like "BEST PLACE TO LIVE" "HIGHEST QUALITY OF LIFE" "LEAST FAILED STATE" They're all BS dude.

Dublin, Barcelona, Milan, Lisbon and Athens are all in countries whose economies are completely boned. Good list.Chevolutionary

The fact a country's economy is going down the drain doesn't change the fact there's always lots of people with a lot of money. Also, many times the country's capital is prosperous while the rest of the country struggles.

Any foreigner I meet who comes to Lisbon is immediatelly impressed with the sheer quantity of new and expensive cars you see. Hell I'm impressed myself.

So many raging Americans in this thread, if Americas patriotism was matched by its educational system the U.S. would be fantastic.
