I think the people who made these rates know that, so I'd imagine they'd do an average.

We've been dropping on the list because congress keeps cutting back on support for the poor while the poor have gotten more numerous due to the take-over of retail job (IE Walmart, Target instead of manufacturing)

I'd like to see further divisions - Canada the US are big countries in terms of area so there are bound to be greater differences due to geographical things like natural resources and access.

My guess is that the territories and the Maritimes drag down the rest of Canada (mostly the Maritimes). It's not their fault, really, but they make less money, don't live as long (reusing fat from dinner to fry breakfast probably has something to do with that), and sit on a ~50% unemployment rate like a beanbag chair.

Norway may be the best country when it comes to the numbers, but what this study didn't take into account is that, when it comes down to it, you're still in ****ing Norway.

GDP and GDP per capita are both used in the calculation of the HDI, so why bother showing them?

There's a lot more than just money to consider here. You also have to think about things such as education, life expectancy, and employment.

Here is a link to all the indicators that are utilized in figuring out the HDI. http://hdr.undp.org/hdr2006/statistics/indicators/default.cfm

Please take a look at my post right before yours. Money is not even close the only thing that needs to be considered. Also, the GDP numbers for the US are a tad misleading. The majority of the GDP comes from a very small portion of the population. As a result, the poverty within the US is masked. The HDI takes that into account, along with many other related factors.

I'm not saying the same thing isn't true for other countries as well, but the effect is almost exaggerated with the US.

The GDP comes from the majority of the people in the country.

gross domestic product, or GDP, is one of the ways for measuring the size of its economy. The GDP of a country is defined as the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time. It is also considered the sum of value added at every stage of production of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time.

I know what the GDP is. What I am saying is that in the end, GDP is simply a reflection of money; the majority of which is in the hands of a small percentage of the population. So while it does incorporate the value of a person painting a house, the vast majority of the value of the final product, the house, lies in the hands of a single individual. Or in the case of a manufacturer, there could be thousands of people contributing to the GDP, but the majority of the value of the final products is associated with the owner. See where I'm coming from?

EDIT: I just noticed that you linked the wiki article defining economy there. Made me giggle. I minored in economics, so I do understand what an economy is. And I also understand the a country's economy is not a reflection of its standard of living.
