This question is primarily to those who finished their degree in university or who are currently in university, how much free time did you get? I know it depends on the program but I'm taking Nursing next year and I would like to know if I lstill have free time to play video games? How many hours are you free in a week?

Yeah, theres enough free time to get all your studying done and some enjoyment. Weekends will consistently be your best times to devote several staight hours to.

I can manage 2 to 3 hours of totally free time on a weekday. Nursing might be a bit more difficult because of how highly competitive it is. Certain semesters will be notably more difficult. Some of my more advance calculus classes made me cut down my free time to only 30 minutes a weekday or so for stretches of a few weeks. Some semesters were notably light (some bullcrap Art History classes, a Geography class, and a Literature class) and i had little homework at all leaving most of the day free.

I'm majoring in computer science and I'm involved with on campus groups and I have a girlfriend. I don't have much free time. Ever. Except when my inability to sleep comes into play and I stay up really late.

I spend almost 100% of my free time listening to or reviewing music and playing bass, with the occasional party.

First year is awesome. You have a lot of free time, and they way Uni works (at least mine is) you have large periods of time where you essentially have nothing to do (except readings), and then there are certain periods (mainly mid terms and finals) where you have a lot of work to do because you have to study for the exam. Other than that though, its pretty relaxed. You should imo, do most of the readings that you get assigned, rather than leaving to the last minute, but other than that, its pretty awesome. Im in 3rd year and I do a lot of EC's, I work on Campus, and I still have time every week to go out (1-2 times), and a decent amount of time to chill with my friends and frat brothers.

Depends. I quit playing video games for my freshman year thinking college was going to be brutal.

But then after i realized how easy it actually was, i had plenty of time for gaming.

I have pretty much NO free time at all. I'm only in my second year, I'm studying Computer Games Design and my uni has decided to make it as full on as physically possible, to the point where working 125 hour weeks has become the norm ¬__¬

Yeah, there is def. a lot of time for playing video games with the guys on the floor. Generally, if one takes 5 courses, the amount of time you will be spending in class is 15 hours in a week. That being said, I would highly recommend you minimize the amount of playing video games in your first year, and rather go out and meet people and get involved on campus. You should also consider joining the Greek system.

TBH TC; although I said my friend has loads of hours doing Nursing, i'm sure you'll find plenty of time to play video games. The night before I left for uni, i decided I wasn't going to take my PS3 but by the morning I changed my mind and it was the best decision I could have made there. Turns out my flatmates were cvnts and many on my course were in a similar boat; needless to say, having it there as an option to use in free time was great.

I'm currently at a University and I don't play video games as much as I do at home. It just depends on how well you want to be doing for your degree. If you want to be successful in your future, work hard. That's what I'm doing. In a week, I play video games for about 3 or 4 hours. But do play sometimes - in my first semester I had a pain in my chest and it was stress from working too hard. I took it easy and play more, the pain didn't come back again.

I was a full time student throughout college, majored in neuroscience, graduated with a 3.81 GPA, and worked in a lab full time as well. I always had plenty of time to slack off.

I've heard electrical engineering students and CS majors have pretty heavy workloads though due to the fact that all of their classes hand out huge homework assignments on a regular basis. Also, pre-meds tend to have to split their time between volunteer hours, clinical shadowing, extracurriculars, classes, studying, research (although not nearly to the same degree as pre-PhDs), and MCAT prep which does actually wind up taking up all of their time.

For all other majors though, my personal observation has been that the people who complain about not having enough free time either have very unrealistic expectations for how much free time they should have (ie they want to do nothing but party) or they're trying to major in a subject that they can barely handle and have to study for extremely unreasonable amounts of time just to perform acceptably.

First year computer science student, and I probably have too much free time. Except all my tests/assignments seem to be due at the same time so I have really busy weeks, but most of the time it's not bad at all.

Depends on the degree and the university. I'm studying CS and I have 17 hours of class time each week this semester I think; what's that, three and a half hours a day? Nothing compared to some other degrees or, say, working full-time. Of course, you'll have to do some work at home - especially if you're approaching deadlines - but I've found the amount of work they say you should do at home is usually much greater than what's actually required. Either way, you should have plenty of time to get your work done, socialise and spend some time by yourself.

This semester I have a lot of free time. Only taking three classes and the one is rock climbing so there is never any homework there, Alice 2.2 class the homework takes like 4 to 5 hours if you don't know what to do but I understand it, and Survey of Computer INfo/Sys has like no homework except read a chapter and maybe do two labs and thats it. My major is Management Information Systems

I'm in my second semester of my first year and I was lucky enough to schedule all of the classes I needed to take back-to-back, so I've got class from 8 AM - 11 AM Monday through Friday and then I spend about 3-6 hours a day studying and or doing homework. Last semester I had Fridays off, but I had longer class periods. Sort of liked that better. I still get a good hour or two of gaming time in each day and a little more on the weekends depending on how much work I've got due. I've done really well so far, so I think I manage my time pretty well. I've thought about getting a part-time job, but that might end up hurting me int he long run if I fall behind in my work, so I'll save that for the summer this year.

Uni is not a death camp. Yes they want to work ou hard, but they arent going to do it at the expense of your mental stability. If you haven't had major problems with your work ethic or conceptual absorption for the past twelve years then you shouldn't worry about college.

It depends on the UNI

If you're going to a state school, yeah you'll get loads of free time

If you're going to a Top 25 school...Like Princeton or Brown

Then you won't have much time

To the topic creator, I see that you're a Nursing major. Most of the nursing majors I knew had less free time compared to everyone else. Its a major that requires a lot of commitment. That being said, your life will not be dedicated purely on studying. You'll find free time every now and then. Just manage your time well. As for me, I was a double Business major. There were weeks where I had plenty of free time. The only times I stressed out were during finals and projects.

You'd be surprised. If you work efficiently and organize your schedule properly, you'll find you have plenty of free time in spite of the heavy workload. I was less busy in university than I am with work now.

In college I had lots of free time for personal time. However, I had more things to do in my personal time so it balances out. In short if you want your main free-time activity to be gaming you will have lots of time for that but other things may pop up to distract you.

It depends on how you're able to handle a course load. If you're barely starting college likely you're going to be taking a lot of core and intro classes. You should have plenty of free time. I know several others who are studying nursing and they seem to have enough free time to spend.

I'm an architecture student and haven't had the free time to play a game in 2 weeks. :(

My week ends are devoted solely to building models, because my other class work takes up the rest of the week.

I'm doing a double degree full-time. When I go back to university this will be my roster:

  • Monday: 8:30-7:30 University
  • Tuesday: 11:00-8:00 Work @ Job 1
  • Wednesday: 9:30-12:30 University
  • Thursday: 9:00-5:00 Work @ Job 2 (every second week)
  • Friday-Sunday: 9:00-6:00 Work @ Job 1

Basically there's only 12 hours of classes a week. I have ample free time to work two jobs and have every night free!

How much free time you have is entirely up to you, you could do the minimum amount of work or you could study as hard as you can. At uni the work your tutors/lecturers set is just the minimum.

I did a three year Games Programming degree in 2 years. Each trimester was 12 weeks long and for some of those trimesters i managed to play a few games in the first couple of weeks.. Then after that I had no time for it at all. Especially the last ~4 weeks of each trimester. The worst week was at the end of my 4th trimester where i was at my computer coding for 150/168 hours of the week. The last 18 hours included travelling to and from uni a few times and sleeping.

About to start my second year of a double business degree. Honestly uni can be as busy or easy as you want it to be. Clearly you get what you put in so if you want to do well then yes you will have a lot of work, still a lot of downtime. However mix in travel, part-time work and then the heavy workload of assignments and the hell that is exams and you will be pretty busy. Pro-tip if you want to do well, stay organised, do the set work (e.g. readings and tutorial work) and regularly revise work and you should be fine. Some weeks you will be really free and other not so much but you always have down time so don't stress to much.

can't say since each person's experience is different. for me i don't remember having much free time. studied engineering, had a gf who was a 35 minute T ride away despite it only being like 5 miles, worked part time as a tutor and was involved w/ student government. it depends on what you end up doing.

I have a Bsc in Nursing, got it at U of Montreal... I was working 30hrs/week, had a girlfriend and played videogames. It just depends what you're ready to cut out of your life... I wasn't sleeping much more than 6 hours a night.
