NightWish are quite huge... Also, I've always loved Enslavement of Beauty, but I can never find anything of theirs anywhere :(

Metal is a pretty underground genre, so what is big and what is not is pretty hard to say. If not being known is important, I can help you abit. Progressive Metal: Cloudscape Folk Metal: Lumsk, Korpiklaani, Trollfest, Tyr and Therion. Melodic Death Metal: Norther, Into Eternity and Kalmah Progressive Black Metal: Peccatum, Primordial

No, it's progressive viking metal. Seriously, I don't think people really care to divide between viking and folk metal.

Depends on your take of "popularity", and whether it's worldwide or just towards the North American region of the world.

Therion is Symphonic Metal. :| Closest album to Folk Metal would be "Secret Of The Runes", but even then that was simply a concept album and is not to be fully taken seriously.

Meh, that's why I hate genres. I've never even heard about symphonic metal. Let me guess, they are the only one in that genre?

Nah. There are some other bands in it, but Therion's the biggest. Nightwish is a bit into it, but not so much.

Sigh, totally awesome and crazy band! Always doing something new with their albums and can also go from black/thrash metal to pop music suddenly without warning. I recommend listening to "Corpsecry-Angelfall"( download at Sighs media page ). Entombed, a death-ish metal band(some call em "Death n Roll").The bands myspace page, I really recommend the song Chief Rebel Angel on the page and also this music video; Damn Deal Done. Pain of Salvation, an experimental metal band with alot of genres mixed in. Is always doing something different with their albums which makes them an interesting listen for most(including disco music.. o.O). My space page. Also 2 videos by Pain of Salvation; Foreword from Entropia album and In the Flesh from "The Perfect Element 1".

Would I be wrong in assuming that Sonata Arctica is safe?
