The thing about marijuana is that it is a very benign drug. I'm not saying that there aren't health risks but there are health risks to coffee, too. When used AS A MEDICAL DRUG under MEDICAL SUPERVISION, marijuana can be a blessing for many people. It's a sad state of affairs when the government allows the ABUSE of a drug to dictate it's medical applications.

I mean, if abuse were the sole reason to ban a drug, why are Oxycontin and opiates still on the market? Because they work.

If people stopped looking at marijuana with an historical bias, maybe we can do something useful with it. And hey, if that means ending prohibition to get these street gangs out of the distrobution picture, then so be it.

I agree with that....maybe making it legal would help, but its important to realize why it became illegal in the first place. There are so many ways to work around drug abuse, I mean but im no expert on that.

depends on the drug and WHY it was made illegal. marijuanas illegality was a political agenda and nothing more, it had nothing at all to do with all the reefer madness propaganda, they just used the propaganda to reinforce it.

There is no reason that marijuana should be illegal...NONE (if you compare it to alcohol) It is less addictive than alcohol, less long term side effects, less impairment. It only serves as a way to imprison poor people...nothing more. I hate that we send people to jail for victimless crimes...all the while muderers, rapists, terrorists don't serve full sentances because the jails are overcrowded -we will send someone to jail for life (3 strikes rule) for smoking weed 3 times, but a muderer or rapist can get out in less than 10 or 20 years...are you freakin kidding me Not to mention the money aspect. 1. it could be a cash crop, help the economy 2. tax the hell out of it like other "sin" taxes 3. reduce $$$ to criminals 4. less $$$ spent on punishing people that smoke it (trail, lawyers, jail, cops, etc) Other benefits: Standardize it = not laced with something that might kill you instantly

I've been a drug addict for years. I'm also a very intelligent, motivated person. I've passed every exam I've ever taken and now I'm studying English at University. I'm a hard worker, i've never been in trouble with the police and I'm actively searching for a part-time job.

I find this idea of urine tests for welfare checks to be very offensive. Drug addicts are not bad people, some of the greatest people who ever lived were addicted to drugs.

then either get a job and don't complain (like i did) or stop using whatever you're using and get a welfare check. its not that difficult.

btw i would like to say this ahem

SINCE YOUR WELFARE MONEY COMES OUT OF MY PAYCHECK I DONT CARE IF YOU ARE OFFENDED

1. It is not hard to "pass" tests...no great feat (not saying you are dumb, just saying that does not validate IQ). 2. What are you going to when you go for a job and have to pass said drug screen? 3. It is only proposing screens for those THAT TAKE free money...don't want the drug screen, then don't take the money

I'm going to Uni to get a good job. The only money I claim is a grant the Uni gave me for doing everything I'm supposed to do. What the hell is your problem?

[QUOTE="THE_BRUTALIZER"][QUOTE="Rocky32189"]Good idea and I support it, but it doesn't fix the main problem. People can still cheat the system and leech off of the rest of us. They just can't do it while also being a drug addict.10thwonder

Exactly, I believe the system will never be 100% foolproof, althought it should be. Maybe its possible, i dont know. But drug addicts are both lazy AND addicted to drugs, so this would cut out a LOT of them.

It may encourage addicts to turn to crime to feed their addiction though :(

You mean like they already do?

[QUOTE="Engrish_Major"]Is that backed up by statistics, or just going on assumption? Do you know how much it actually costs to perform urine tests? That said, if it is actually cost-effective, then I would be for it.rawsavon
This exactly I am all for it on priciple alone Heck, I am for it even if it costs the same or a little more...just because it is "right" IMO

Yeah, shoveling more out of the tax payers money will solve anything. :P

The thread doesn't seem to cross any lines by itself, but if you guys can't conduct it without calling each other names, promoting drug use, or promoting/advertising/announcing ways in which drug tests can be cheated, it will have to be closed. You all know the rules, so stick to them.

yeah, sounds like a decent idea, although giving urine test to all those people every week or so would be very costly I would think
