No seriously, how do you account for that if it was supposedly all the Republicans' fault?

QuistisTrepe_

Oh look, and now you're putting words in my mouth. I never said nor do I think it's "all the Republicans' fault," merely that polls suggest that Americans think taxes should have been part of the deficit reduction.

More to the point, policy and politicians are different. You were attempting to compare a policy to a politician, as opposed to a policy to a policy.

Ok, and thanks for clarifying. But that poll suggesting a preference for tax increases screams of short-sightedness and panic from the half of America that doesn't pay federal income tax.

How much of public opinion/voting patterns isn't the result of short-sightedness and panic? :P

.... We need to create jobs.. That was the entire purpose of spending money during the deficit.. To make the private sector healthy and stable so tax revenues would be increased to the Clinton years.. This excessive cuting will not some how fix problems, in fact it may make things even worse.. Much of the private sector depends off certain portions of government to thrive directly.. The government is one of the biggest employers.. And finally many of the programs that want to be cut are safety nets meant to provide equal opportunity to every one.. Something that is failing miserably due to being mismanaged and underfunded in multiple ways.. We then have a Middle Class who is disintigrating into this group.. And the solution for all this? To cut the programs that would hurt the people getting hurt the most in the economy, while refusing to raise any taxes what so ever.. To the super rich and Corporations.. Who have in fact increased in profits many times over in these past years.. Where are all these jobs? Many of these corporations literally paid 0% in tax money last cycle, yet they cut jobs in the US?.. The debate should never have been about the deficit to begin with, it should about trying to put the economy back on track.. Instead the closest thing we have gotten is mroe tax cuts so the super rich and corporations continue syphoning money from the government and the people with no return.. Its a FUBAR situation.

Not to mention that half those AMericans are working on stagnating wages for years.. The mean wage for the average american has hardly changed through the decades in value.. YET prices have been.. In fact the sharpest increase in wages we have seen have been with the top elite.. I would argue those taxes are already being paid, because they have been screwed on their wages for decades now.

How long before people will finally have it with our government, and march up in mass and recall just about every congress member we elected?

Or just resign from the states, and eventully cause a new civil war.....

[QUOTE="mattbbpl"]Wasn't this expected? I thought we've been doing tricks like borrowing from pensions and other funds for several months to extend the deadline. Is this not predominantly the money needed to restock those funds?stanleycup98
That was my assumption too. I don't think this is anything to worry about. They are just restocking and cash piling again.

Bingo. Typically the Treasury maintains a bit of a buffer to avoid accidentally running out of money on an everyday basis. These are referred to as "Reserves" In the last couple of months, our reserves got more and more depleted during the debt ceiling negotiations dragged on. My guess is that the treasury just restocked their reserves.

Projected being the optimum word, easily translated to buggered if we know what the debt will be in 2022

I couldn't have put it better myself. Not single one of these projections has ever been accurate.

This is a good lesson for the GoP...

You don't just blindly cut spending unless there is a TAX cushion to slow the fall.

1. No spending = no new jobs.

2. No new jobs = no new revenue -ALSO- No new taxes = no new revenue.

3. No new revenue = no balance.

The GoP needs to cut the Tea Party Cancer out of their ranks or they, and the country, are screwed.

That will never happen, if you look at the US government budget most of the money goes to unnecessary war, foreign bases, and defense contractors, not until this is cut will anything change. And we know the christian right loves wars.

See I can't agree with this at hand, because the Democrats are no better in this regard either.. During the decades, military has only grown.. And the Democratic foreign policy seems to be no better then the Republican policies in most areas..

I don't get it either.. Isn't the Tea party suppose to be the party of disenfranchised, frustrated Middle and working class people? Yet they directly support the kinds of policies that benefit the super rich and corproations while wanting to cut the programs that benefit them the most.. Its mind boggling..

One clearly had nothing to do with the other. We didn't have any real cuts, we made no credible cuts as recommended by S&P and that's why we were downgraded. Our entitlements are unsustainable, tax increases would never cover them all.

How does the debt limit affect US citizens?

MacBoomStick
A govenment that can't borrow either as much or as conveniently as it has become accustomed to could end up in a position of not being able to send out Social Security checks, or meet other government payrolls like civil servants and the military. Imagine if prison guards weren't receiving their pay so they walked off the job (it's happened before)... imagine if state and municipal governments funding for garbage collection or policing was cut off or if you called 911 and no-one was there to answer your call...

Why did they raise the debt ceiling in the first place? It's over 14 trillion and has only been going up. They're not doing anything to solve it, so they'll just hit it again. They should declare bankrupt before China attacks.

PS: 14 Trillion is so unbelievably much, never to be paid off.

Because in the US, Raising taxes means the government is telling them what to do with their money and that collides with the ideal view in the US that the government is to decide little to preferably nothing when it comes to the citizens money.

Raising taxes and lowering spending is = to slowing the economy overall.

Ina pseudo-recessionary period, you don't really want to do that.

Cut Medicare.

Cut Medicaid.

Cut Welfare.

Cut Social Security.

Poor die, old die, poor starve, old starve, disabled people who can't get coverage die.

All that is left is people who can afford their way in life.

The 14.5 trillion deficit in 10 years disapears and the US becomes a creditor nation never borrowing again.

--- From a disabled person who will have no health insurance in 2 years and is using government SSI.

--- From a disabled person who will have no health insurance in 2 years and is using government SSI.

as wrong as that seems I have to agree. I feel theres too many people and the world just can't handle them all. Sadly people need to stop living so long. Its messing up all the balance for everything.

There are 6 billion people in the world. We can't afford to feed everyone. I believe more in a society where everyone takes care of themselves and their family and friends instead of relying on government to do the work for them. People fail to realize that they aren't entitled to anything from the government.

I think if about half the world died off we would be good. Slowly died off I mean. Not all at once
