We'll annex you soon enough. :P

Skullsoldi3r

I'd like to see the Americans try :P We do have standing army... albeit much smaller than the United States we still have one. We could seriously counteract any invasion you launched while waiting for NATO support. The old deterrence plan against USA had the Canadian Forces counteracting the USA invasion via invading the US itself. By taking over a number of the major US cities close to the border giving us a foothold in the country while waiting for British Commonwealth troops to arrive. Except we wouldnt have the British Commonwealth... we would have NATO. NATO binds all countries in the alliance to stop any nation acting as an aggressor against a NATO nation. In this case USA would abandon the alliance and in doing so would have Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, etc, etc. owning the crap out of USA. I would no doubt China getting involved as they would not foot another huge american conflict via loans. Who would possibly help the USA? Russia? Maybe for the artic territory but member WW2 and the Cold War? We saw what happens when Russia tries to share terroritory with Germany and USA.

...hell ya.

Who said anything about an invasion? A couple backroom deals over the decades and your natural resources are ours!

That is not what I like to hear. I couldn't care less if they didn't have any french in other provinces. If you want to work here, you need to speak french.

Franko_3

I wasn't going to work there, I was going to sell internet services there. The only thing that would be in Quebec would be a room with a router. A real router, not those Netgear things you buy in stores for $65.

All I needed to do was apply for a tax permit, and I could not because they didn't offer the forms in English. However, if a Francaphone crossed the border into Ontario and asked for the form in French, by law they would be provided it. Hypocrasy.

You know, if you cross several borders of Tennessee and go to New-Mexico, you can have your forms in spanish. French have a sizable community in Ontario (north of Ontario and Ottawa), that's why they are offering it. If you go in Quebec city, where 95-98% speak french, they will probably not have every forms in english, but if you go in Montreal, everything is in french and english, because 25% of the population only speak english.

English is one of the official languages in Canada. It's like an American going to D.C. and being told they don't have forms in English.

I'm one of the few people who can honestly say I have lived in both countries. I was in Canada from 2000-2002 and then moved back to the states. Sorry, Canada just doesn't 'do it' for me. And it's mostly the little things:

-EVERYONE had to comment on me being from the US, with things like "It's so much better up here, isn't it?" And when they learned I was from Tennessee, "Do you still have outhouses?" LOL

-The French expected me to speak French and have French lettering on my business, but when I started looking into opening a store in Quebec suddenly they wouldn't tolerate any official forms in English, although they make the rest of the country offer official forms in French.

-No biscuits and gravy, just bagels and Timmys.

-My wife (now my ex) had a puliminary embolism and spent three days in the hallway of the hospital (Cornwall General).

-Loonies. I hate change.

-The sidewalks roll up at 6pm.

-Cogoeco sucks 15 different kinds of ass. Ditto for Sympatico (but Sympatico did buy my business from me for enough to retire on so I can't be too pissed).

-Oil heat. Ugh.

-I had in in-ground pool that was only warm enough to swim in for like 1 month of the year. The rest of the year it was covered with an ugly-ass trashbag-looking tarp.

-The Catholics hated me because I'm protestant and married a non-practicing Catholic.

-Domtar.

-I couldn't bring my handguns with me, I had to leave them at my parents.

-Winter is like 6 months of the year, and I hate winter.

-Summer nights still required a light coat. I never got used to this, I'm used to going outside at night in the summer in sandals and shorts and still sweating.

-Quebec in general...what a bunch of pompus asses. Had a waiter in Quebec city who forced me to oder through my wife because I don't speak French, and then the waiter was speaking perfect English when it came time for me to use my credit card and he was asking how much he should put on for a tip. I told him to take his tip and shove it up his ass.

Not the whole list, and I didn't list everything, but yeah Quebec managed to piss me off while I was there because all I was trying to do was help people get broadband who probably still don't have it 10 years later. Yeah I was trying to make money as well but a person has to make a living and it's honest work, but those asshats wouldn't do anything at all to help me.

My biggest complaint about ALL of Canada is people ALWAYS saying stuff like "Aren't you glad you left the states?" "Isn't it so much better up here?" "You got out just in time (right after 9/11  ) and so on.

I feel like I'm missing out on half of Canada.
The farthest west I've been is Toronto, and I've never been up north further.
I like the maritimes though.
... Even though I haven't been to PEI. Or Newfoundland :|

I'm the worst. D:

It's good to see Melbourne up there and when I moved here some 7 or so years ago I would have certainly agreed, however the cost of living has increased way beyond inflation here – things just aren't as affordable for most people anymore. Maybe that's just me I dunno.

You might think that from TV but that's not how it is on the street. When my wife, ex now, who was from Canada came down here everyone fawned all over her and asked all about Canada...what's the coldest she's ever seen it? How much snow did they get on average? How warm did it get in summer? Do you see any moose?

No one asked me those kinds of question in Canada about Tennessee unless it was about country music (which I don't listen to and know nothing about), Elvis or outhouses, it was all "har har, we're so much better."

That's what makes our brief summers feel so darn glorious and the flora so darn green and lush :P

But yeah, in some ways they do have a point. We can be a morose bunch, but hell I miss I music scene back there and the hedonistic mentality when the weekend kicks in. I guess at least I have some decent beaches here though :)

I have absolutely loved Vancouver and BC ever since I moved here 6 years ago, and I'm not too surprised by Vancouver being at the top of the list.

But as said before, who calls it "Vancouver City"? Never heard that one before.

Maybe they're talking about Vancouver City as opposed to Greater Vancouver (incl. North Van, Burnaby etc). It's technically divided, and Van City is doing a lot of initiatives to improve quality of life.

This list sucks!! It has Melbourne above Sydney?!?!?! Damn you Carr/Iemma/Rhys/Keneally for ruining our state :(

On a serious note, Canada is a fine place to live. I like how, in this list, the real competition is between Australia and Canada. I like how only one of Australia's "Big Five" cities wasn't in the Top 10 (Brisbane)

Having lived in both I certainly vouch for Melbourne, although one thing gets on my baps and that's those ****ing trams. How many times have I been stuck behind one intent on never going more than 18kmh and stopping every 10 meters. I think I could unicycle backwards and get to my destination faster sometimes

Having lived in both I certainly vouch for Melbourne, although one thing gets on my baps and that's those ****ing trams. How many times have I been stuck behind one intent on never going more than 18kmh and stopping every 10 meters. I think I could unicycle backwards and get to my destination faster sometimes

I disagree i think the tram network is the best part about melbourne, very convientient. Maybe you could change lanes?

Really? I loathe them. And sure changing lanes is fine if there's more than one, if not then you're ****ed

true very true

Vancouver always wins or at least comes in the top 5 in most of these types of things. I just saw a completely different list where Vancouver came fifth in the world, and it was a list of the most environmentally friendly cities to live in in the world. I think that's a big draw. Our air is incredibly clean. 90% of our energy comes from renewable resources. Transportation to various parts of the city is still a problem though as are certain less-than-favourable sections such as main and hastings yet these are being looked at. Thereare currently, I believe, something like 16 social housing residences being built for those less fortunate people in the city by Vancouver itself. I've posted a couple pictures below of them.

We are also getting BC Place redone and renamed. If you watched the 2010 Olympics you'll know BC place because it was where the opening and closing ceremonies were. Here is a render. You can see it with it's new roof or at least what it will look like after it's done.

Vancouver is also known as Hollywood North. Many movies and television series are filmed here. Also it is slowly becoming the gaming capital of North America. I believe it is fourth after New York, Montreal and Los Angeles or something. Pixar just opened up a new studio here.

Canada is also the third largest video game maker in the world.

[QUOTE="htekemerald"] Canadians have a superiority complex when it comes to America

But it works both ways, Americans have a superiority complex when it comes to Canada, and the world.

br0kenrabbit

You might think that from TV but that's not how it is on the street. When my wife, ex now, who was from Canada came down here everyone fawned all over her and asked all about Canada...what's the coldest she's ever seen it? How much snow did they get on average? How warm did it get in summer? Do you see any moose?

No one asked me those kinds of question in Canada about Tennessee unless it was about country music (which I don't listen to and know nothing about), Elvis or outhouses, it was all "har har, we're so much better."

I've been to America. I have gotten all these questions and more, but hey I'll be like you. I'll chock up a few bad experiences with a few people who thought they were funny and hate a whole country over it.
