Hi, all!

First of all, I'm omnivorous, and I'm taking a shot at going part-time vegetarian (which will either be permanent or may potentially be on the road to full vegetarian or pescetarian). At this point, I'm trying to cancel out meat in my lunches and breakfasts while retaining it in most of my dinners.

For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, do you have any tips? I also welcome suggestions on tasty vegetarian/vegan foods. Thanks!

Careful being a vegetarian is not as easy as you think There are certain nutrients that only meat can give you and like it or not you'll be needing them.

Yeah. That's why I'm only going part-time. I'm not getting rid of meat completely.

As for the person in this forum who asked "why," I'm doing it for health reasons in order to try to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.

And this week I'll be going to see a dietician at the health center at the university I go to so that I can get advice and warnings about things or habits to avoid.

ok now you make sense. But for your reason, why not get rid of red meat, pork and other fatty meats and enjoy chicken breasts and fish?

When you do go back to eating the flesh of an animal, there's always the low fat, lean meats like venison, rabbit, kangaroo and many types of fishies.

I might do that eventually, but right now, I can't bring myself to give up red meat completely. But I'm cutting my intake of it by about 50%.

Try still including fish in your main diet, it'll make life so much easier for you. It can be difficult being vegetarian at times, but it's overall much easier to eat healthier by following such a regime. You have to possess self-control, but keep in mind that changes such as these are much better formed with moderation. Also, it's okay to indulge every once in a while. There's still lots of good foods that you can eat while being vegetarian, just make sure you're getting the proper nutrients. Personally, I found that eating small meals more during the day made the overall transition easier for me. I'd bring yogurt, fruit, wraps, granola bars and whatnot to eat throughout the day in my purse, along with a bottle of water.

If you're losing weight, try avoiding bad foods in general (soda, pastas, etc) and maybe going to the gym a few times a week. A small combination of all of these will make a significant difference, and you won't have to take any to the extreme.

Thanks for the advice!

I liked what you said about vegetarian being easier to eat healthier. It seems to be the most sensible of diets, as compared to other diets people follow for weight loss.

I have friends who are vegetarian and vegan, so I'm seeking advice from them too.

I eat veggie burgers a lot. They get a bad rap, but there are a lot of them out there that are really good. That could be something to look for as a possible vegetarian meal.

Cereal is another vegetarian thing I eat.

If your main concern is health, then your best bet as far as meat goes is probably chicken and fish. I only eat fowl and fish, myself; I don't touch red meat.

I've tried the Burger King Veggie Burger and it's not too bad. That's probably what I'll get when I go there most of the time.

Also, I've noticed that it's very easy to make breakfast vegetarian-- i.e., eggs, potatoes, pancakes, etc.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat akin to what you're going for, and it's a great place to start. Just try to cut back eating meat excessively and restrict it to special occasions like when you go out. Also, peanut butter is a good protein supplement, just saying :P
