I could only find this forum best suitable for this question, hope i was right :D

Anyway i would like to ask you guy some stuff.

Living in a country where video game designing doesn't actually exists and failing to find enough info on the internet i would like you ask :

Working in a video game company , what are the roles? Is it like programmer , concept artist , writer are the three main jobs?
What job does a guy that balances the game do?The guy that decides how many bullets does a gun take to kill in Call of duty for example , what is his job?

What kind of universities are there for this?
Thanks!

I suggest picking up a book related to the games industry and checking out some industry sites the main roles are as follows Designers Artists Programmers Though with each one there are sub divisions such as AI programmers, level designers, gameplay designers, character artists enviromental artists. You also have Producers and lead roles with directing small groups within the team.

I have a friend who works in the industry. Normally it's a fairly typical job but when they get a few months from release they pretty much don't sleep, see their family, or even their homes.

Yeah, that was made clear to me at each of my interviews (though I ended up not getting an offer from either place). In hindsight, I'm much happier with my job where I can slack in my 30-40 hours/week and get as good or better pay than I would spending my life on making a game that had maybe a 5% chance of being ZOMG awesome

TC, I suggest you buy a C++ book and learn how to program. Invite a few of your friends over for brainstorming sessions. Feel free to share your anime sketches too.

This is why it's better just to become famous and sell your stories to the video game companies. Or join one and make stories from there.

Weird, at the Sony interview I had circa 2001, they were all using Visual Studio (!!!!) with a special plugin that allowed it to target the PS2 hardware.

I used to write video game scripts for fun. I'd design battle systems, maps, etc. I was a nerd.

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, (and video game designers). But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

To TP, it is best you don't think about gaming industry for now. What exactly you want to do? Programer? Art? Manager? Focus on the general direction first. Gaming Industry is too specific as a career goal "at your age". Once you become of the professional, you can decide if you want to specializing in gaming or not.magicalclick

Enlighten me as to why is it's not good at the moment , please.

Well i do not like programming and am not good in art , i am only interested in the designing part.
So in order to pick any direction what kind of way do i need to take now? What universities etc?

Any country is viable since am getting out of this one anyway.

Thanks to those that replied to me in a serious manner!

Seriously. Only part of our stuff was joking. It is extremely difficult to do what you want to do. Go for it, but until you make it, find another skill similar to that where you have a back up. The reason there isn't much advice, is it is like becoming an actor, not many people succeed or make it even if they are talented. There is no good advice, just trial and error.

I've never ever ever heard of anyone entertaining the game industry directly in "game design". Pretty much you have to have some well-defined skill (art, programming, etc) and can move into design/direction roles once you have demonstrated that you are good at your job AND have interest and at least broad understanding of the other components of game development, you have a shot at designing a game
