How can the work of video games be compared with the work of movies? It seems as though they are only a small step away from being an animated movie.

Games have a huge advantage over movies because of their interactivity. Games can put you right into the position of certain characters or settings. You can see the effects of the choices you make. Even books written in the first person do not come close because you don't have control over the events that take place.
But maybe that's exactly what makes them NOT art. Every other art form you're getting exactly the experience the artist intends you to get.
Still they have control over the potential for which choices you have in the first place.
I'm sure you're aware of Spore. Nothing says 'global warming = bad' more than filling your own planet with CO2 and watching your entire civilisation suffocate.
I want that game soooo bad...
