Hello to anyone that is interested. I am working on a senior project and I want to explore the relationship between video games and art. There are many different views on this subject and i want opinions of other gamers rather than just my own. So...

You'll have to define art first.

Great responses. Now how would gameplay fit in with art. Could a game with simple visuals still be artful through it's gameplay?

It depends on the game. Games like Rez have gameplay that are interwoven with it's visua;s.

It seriously depends on the game. A game like Halo 3 can't be called art exactly, but look at Ico or Shadows of Colossus, if that's not art I don't know what is.

Not all games are works of art. Games are meagerly the medium through which ideas can be communicated. I agree with the Bioshock example. It portrays men as being irresponsible for the consequences of their actions, among other themes.

A lot of artistic games are not commercial though.

I consider anything that was created by someone from an idea is art. It dosent have to be perfect. I think thats what makes art what it is, art.

Escape from Woomera.

It is a Half-Life mod. It looks absolutely horrible. It is art in the way it puts the player in the shoes of someone normally considered an illegal immigrant, but persuades us to believe that they are victims of injustice.

Sorry. I think games very much can be art. If the intent is to evoke an emotional response from the player I think it could be art. This isn't a very well thought out hypothesis though...

You'll have to do a two pronged "attack". The graphics and artistic direction in games is obvious. But also try to mention the stories in games.

Also, toss in a mention of immersion, and ease of playing.

One word: Bioshock.

It is really hard for any video game to be considered a work of art, and I really can't think of any game that I would consider a work of art. Bioshock had great visuals and atmosphere, but the actual gunplay was reall easy and simple. Also, the whole moral choice thing with the Little Sisters was pretty underwhelming. The thing is, Bioshock was basiclly a cut-and-paste of System Shock 2, only with the gameplay mechanics dumbed down and the graphics updated. Anyway, Bioshock's (or any game, for that matter) graphics and gameplay mechanics will eventually become obsolete, and real art cannot become obsolete.

You could use Ico, and Shadow of the colussous as examples of emotional gameplay like your charator feels alone and that feeling is connect to the player. also okami b/c its so creative. every ff game

You could also make a great a great case for Metal Gear Solid, b/c even though its stories are kinda silly their meanings and what kojima is trying to say w/ his themes of nuclear proliferation, circumstantial alliance in war among others.

I belive video games are art and can be made to create unique perspectives or views on an argument b/c unlike a film or book you are actually the one playing through the charactor on screen and you in a way live through those expierences, which cannot really be said for other forms of art.

I don't think that because there is music in videogames that makes videogames art.

In a world where novels, music, and movies are considered art, I find it hard to believe that some people think video games aren't. Video games combine these things and some do it quite beautifully.

How can the work of video games be compared with the work of movies? It seems as though they are only a small step away from being an animated movie.

KiraKaKash15

Games have a huge advantage over movies because of their interactivity. Games can put you right into the position of certain characters or settings. You can see the effects of the choices you make. Even books written in the first person do not come close because you don't have control over the events that take place.

But maybe that's exactly what makes them NOT art. Every other art form you're getting exactly the experience the artist intends you to get.

Still they have control over the potential for which choices you have in the first place.
