[QUOTE="dissonantblack"]no. video games CONTAIN art, but they are technically not art. they are considered software priducts. dissonantblack

Thats like saying portraits aren't art they are considered paint on canvas.

then perhaps video games should be sold at art stores and not electronics stores.

You mean like how portraits are sold at art galleries, music in music stores, comic books in comic book stores, etc, etc?

yes. if you are implying that video games are art products. is that the case?

You're not making any sense.

What? Video games are sold in video game stores (along with other places). I don't see how where an item is sold determines whether it is art or not.

Art is using skill to produce or express something. I believe video games are an ultimate form of art. You must think of a concept, you must write a story (most of the time), you must create the gameplay, you must create graphics, you must record sounds, and you must make it attractive. I can't think of any reason why video games would not be considered art.

It is a great creation of many human minds, and requires lots of skill and creativity.

Are Video Games Art?

KiraKaKash15

No, I don't think so. They just resemble the ideas and concepts of the creators. They don't intend to make art and by playing it, the value falls even further. Games that emphasize on artistic creation like Okami can be considered. But it is still not art. If however an image or a concept taken out and put in still life i.e. the environment in Halo is painted on a canvas or Okami's styl-e of painting is taken, then it can be considered.

That's really the problem no one can really nail down the definition of art.

Depends on the game. BioShock, for example, has superb artistic qualities. Judging by what is considered 'art' today like people sticking a can of tomatoes on a cow and call it art, i'm sure games can have artistic qualities.

from the dictionary "Art-the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance." I'd say theres a few games that I would call art.

The problem is that the terms "beautiful" and "appealing" are subjective. I might think that pacman (for example) is beautiful and awe inspiring but that doesn't mean everyone else will as well.

I've always viewed video games as a form of art. Especially today. You could take screenshots of any point in almost any game and just hang it on your wall.

If these ain't art, I don't know what is... the process of creating them is all artistic, I can assure you! Anybody who says video games aren't, or can't be, art... are just ignorant.

John Carmack is proof that even something as binary as computer programming can be an art form.

You're not making any sense.A_Tarkovsky

it makes perfect sense. i'm making a sarcastic statement to someone who implies that video games are completely art. and that is not the case. like i said earlier, video games contain art, but they are technically not considered an art from. they're considered software and media devices as opposed to art. and as a video game art and design major, i would know this.
