I'm talking music here what format do people prefer?

Personally I have a 3 tiered approach I get digital download for artist's I'm not sure about, not overly fussed about ect, Get CD's for most stuff I really want and Get vinyl for stuff I really love, of stuff that is OK but the packaging or the vinyl itself is impressive.

Love to hear what others do...

mp3s are by far the most practical method. And with auxiliary jacks on almost all modern electronics there's not much of a need for CDs.

My whole library is purely digital. At first, I didn't even own a music player a few years ago and never owned a CD player.

I mainly buy CDs and rarely download anything unless that's the only way to get it. I'll buy vinyl of semi-current artists I really love and then I also buy a lot of old vinyl mainly consisting of jazz intrumentalists, jazz and easy listening vocalists, lounge music, out of print classical stuff and singles from smaller rap, electronica, and dj artists.

I usually scrounge through the international albums as well looking for 60's french vocalists and random stuff that looks interesting from around the world.

CDs are the purest form I suppose, but nowadays most of the music I buy is digital. It's much more efficient and convenient, seeing as any CD would just end up getting ripped and added to my digital library anyway.

I mostly use digital, though I like the authenticity of vinyl and cd. I usually only buy CD's if the have simething cool with it like a bonus DVD or cool album artwork or something. In the day and age of file sharing, artists need more than just good songs on a cd if they want it to sell

Since my sister and I both have extremely similar tastes, she buys the CDs, and I rip them to the computer to sync to my Zune.

I like the ideas that I've heard: a few people have told me that the industry's going to go back to vinyls. But it's not going to be just vinyls: When you buy a record, it'll come with a code (or something) so you can download it for free. (Free being... after you buy the album, of course.)

As for me? All my music is on the computer with CD backups in case my comp goes to heck. Heaven forbid. That'd be a lot of burning to do to get my library back...

This happened to me the other day. My memory got erased so I lost all my photo's and music. Photos I didnt care about, I only had a couple but I have 2 days atleast worth of music.

I rip my cd's onto my computer, and then synch them to my MP3 so I thought maybe there was a way to also copy the music from the Zen and synch it with my laptop. I was so happy I was able to do that xD

Zen? The Creative player? Those things are pretty cool: my dad's got one. When he saw my sister and I eyeballing his, he bought us Zen Micros for Christmas a few years ago. Glad your computer could sync with it to get your music back!

CD is my favourite format, seeing as many digital downloads are not brilliant quality (iTunes for example, 128kbps, or 256kbps). I like audio quality and i hate a dodgy souding file, much to the extent that i even rip CDs into the flac format, so i get lossless quality on my pc without having a cd in. I must have a good listen to vinyl tho, and my brother who is at uni has got himself a good hi-fi and turntable, and he says the audio quality is awesome (although he was impressed by my computer setup too)

No poll? Vinyl for home listening. I have most of my favorite albums on vinyl and listen to CDs in the car. I also have all of my music backed up on an external hard drive and catalogued in Itunes.

I buy CDs almost exclusively (I've only bought one or two albums in digital form) and then just rip them to mp3 - usually 320kbps, although I'll sometimes go smaller just so I can fit more on my Nano, and the iPod's sound quality isn't good enough to warrant the extra bitrate most of the time.

I buy CDs if I really like the artist, I'll download a couple songs if I don't want the whole CD, and I have a small collection of vinyl. Overall I like CDs because they sound best in my car.

I think Super Audio CD is still the best format. Sometimes i prefer Vinyl because some old versions of certains songs (like Chris Rea Josephine version 4) are only in Vinyl.

CDs all the way, but i convert everything i buy to mp3 and play it on iTunes. i just like having the hard copy, for some reason.

i don't understand the appeal of vinyl, unless you're a DJ. the audio quality is worse, and they take a ton of room to store. if all my cds were records, i would need a whole room to store them. who needs that.

Yeah, I've heard good things about SACD, but not actually heard it. I wish it had been more successful, although I'd hate to buy all of my music again. I guess that's why it didn't catch on.

Wrong. Vinyl's sound better than CDs or MP3s in the majority of cases.

All of my music library is digital, I own a few CD's but I just rip the tracks to my pc, the actual CD almost never gets played. I think it's way more practical that way, why carry lots of CD's and a CD player around and have to switch the CD's when you want to listen to something else when you can carry your entire music library around in an iPod or Zen or whatever.

I don't really see the point of vynil in this day and age, the format is just clumsily large and the sound quality is nowhere near either CD or digital, I didn't even know people still bought Vynil. :P

I get CDs for the stuff I love but sometimes some older CD's are discontinued so I either have to order them and pay extra, or I can download them (which is generally what I do in that situation).

But why does vinyl sound better than CD? I have to say i'm very ignorant on that issue.
