Well Avada Kadavra has the same effect as something like a gun (without the mess) so of course he would just use a wand. Of course with Harry a gun would have sufficed, but he despises muggles so I'm sure he wouldn't be caught dead using a "muggle killing device" unless that device is a wand and it's used to kill muggles ;)

I never understood why the 'powerful' wizards didn't use 'avada kedavra' all the time, since it was meant to be unblockable, and it meant instant death... Surely that would be easier, albeit less fun, than shooting fire and heaploads of other crap at your adversary?

Magic is about a million times more effective, which is made clear in the books. There's a reason nobody bothers packing heat in the wizarding world.

Ah, the many questions of Harry Potter. We could really be here all night speculating and asking questions with no real answers. Yours is one of those. That's not bad! Just frustrating sometimes.

But I agree with what was already mentioned- Voldemort wouldn't be caught dead doing something the muggle way, basically.

What I do not understand is why doesn't voldermort go back in time as a terminator to kill Harry's mother before she becomes a wizard.

well this is my theory on this since muggles can't use magic J.K rowling thought that the same should apply for wizards not being able to use muggle weapons and so forth........atleast i think so

erm, they use cars and muggle things all the time, most wizards either don't know about muggle inventions, or feel that using those devices are beneath them Remember, Ron's father is always fussing with muggle things.

They take what proves to be useful (cars, trains, clocks) and don't use the useless (guns, televisions, planes).

It's made pretty clear in the books muggle weapons are just horribly ineffective against magic. That's why no one bothers.
 The reason Voldemort died in the end of the series is because of Harry's Mothers Protection spell... That remains still in tack.... Even if you attempt to kill Harry Normally it would still back fire on the person trying to harm him. Its just amazing that J. K. Rowling didn't reveal that to the last book.
Your point being? So what if she is popular, she is a pretty good storyteller but as a writer she is not one of the best around by far. Writers like George R.R Martin, Gene Wolfe, Cormac Mccarthy, Jose Saramago, and Kazou Ishiguro are much better. Heck even Stephen King, his series The Dark Tower is much better than Harry Potter imo. She just sells more.

It is very different to harry potter, much darker and slower paced. The whole series is worth reading, heck Gene Wolfe is one of my favorite writers around. All his books are worth reading, especially his short stories.

Well That's "In Your Opinion".

J. K. Rowling's writing attracts a wide range of readers.... Most of the authors you listed have a specific reading fan base or fans looking for a specific genre. Rowling's work has transcended age, race, and nationality and will probably continue to do so until we are all long gone and buried.

Sure the Harry potter series isn't a Literary Masterpiece but there is "magic" that draws attention to the common reader.

I agree that the harry potter books have a certain magic that draws people to them, heck its because of them that I started reading other books. However I dont think the authors I mentioned having a specific fan base that is looking for a specific genre, they are just not so heavily advertised. Harry Potter is pretty easy to get into and the world in it is very black and white for the most part, but series like A Song of ice and fire have no good or bad guys, everyone is grey and even the so called bad guys are deeo and layered. Most characters in Harry Potter are not that interesting, there are some like Snape, Sirius Black, and Lupin who are more interesting but heck the main character Harry is very dull and generic imo. The series also relies on Deus Ex Machine a bit too much, especially in the last book with what happens to voldemort.

yeah, i don't think the books would be as popular if they didn't have the movie characters portraying them so well. I definitely think the harry potter movies outshine the books, by quite a bit.

A Song of Ice and Fire- (High Fantasty).... Its also hard to follow it You get attach to charators because every chapter Jumps perspective to different charaters... And alot of charactors die. Yes the story is more complex and there are multilple plots and stories happening at once but not every reader is going to want to read that. Its also a mature book series.... Lots of Sex...

I will say this I can't wait for the HBO series....

Well HBO is no stranger to sex so that should they should do the series justice:P I actually met the guy who will be playing Jon Snow, cant remember his name though. Did you hear who is playing Tyrion? I agree that the series is a bit hard to follow, but I love the fact that there isnt tons of over the top magic that can solve every problem like in Harry Potter, its mostly pretty subtle in A Song of ice and fire. I hope the 5th book comes out soon, its been delayed for ages.

Rowling's writing is not great. In particular, the later books when her editor apparently stopped, you know, actually editing, are a bit of a mess. My guess is that the editor got kind of frightened to continue doing his/her job due to Rowling's fame and popularity. That having been said, as has been mentioned the books have the ability to reach a wide range of audiences (a rarity) and they created a unique and interesting world (also a rarity) so they definitely have their strong points. But nobody should consider them an example of fine writing. ENTERTAINING though they may be - and I would be the first to admit they were a fun read, they aren't particularly great writing.

Voldemort has to do everything his own way, at whatever cost to convenience. Just running up and busting a cap in his arch-enemy would not be his style; it has to be done by magic, and it has to be the Avada Kedavra because it "fits". Also, films > books? lol wut?

J.K. Rowling is not a good writer so that's probably why. The books weren't great, and the movies were far worse.

if you liked that, you'll love this: Harry Potter movies > Lord of the Rings movies. :)
