So, last night me and a buddy of mine went to Friendly's to pick up some food. As we are waiting, I hear him say: "hey dude, check out the guy who is walking in". The guy was dressed in something like the picture below, except with a smaller skullcap. Now, I didn't find it to be very odd, but I did find it odd my friend found there reason to point him out. What do you all think?

Edit: Clarification - he was wearing jeans underneath

In the particular context I mentioned. There really wasn't any more or any less to the story, other then we got high afterwards. If it helps, I'm a Muslim and hes a Jew.

Haha, nah hes not gay He is in fact fairly clueless about the world around him, which is why I tend to imagine he is just shocked from seeing someone of this man's clothing style for the first time. I'd like to hope hes not racist - though he has casually said during an episode of 24: "F'ing Muslim" - when the Muslim chick from last season is suspected of working for terrorists. Which I of course got really pissed at him about.

Then another time he said something about not understanding Christianity because Jesus was a Jew... from which I said, "dude... you have no idea what you are talking about". Then when he said, "I think I do", I said, "no dude, you clearly don't"... and completely avoided educated him - I think mostly due to the shock of what I heard.

Then another time he asked me if I had heard about "terrorists praying at an airport saying Allah Allah" and how it's messed up. Only to find out he was refering to the Imams who got in trouble for praying at the terminal. From which I got upset, and asked him how he could feel that way in a country that promoted freedom of religion. In which he responded along the lines of: "well all terrorists are muslims", then went on to say "i'm not saying all muslims are terrorists, but most terrorists are muslims... it's kinda like how there are black people, and then there are *insert n-bomb*...".

The latter of which was the most shocking for me to hear. The thing is though... I just don't know what to say to him... especially when in the back of my mind, I know the kid is racist. Usually, I just avoid the subject as best I can, because it's almost like hes a lost cause...

Ah... it's rather frustrating. I just wish he wasn't so babied as a child. Maybe he would have a better sense of people around him, and actually be concerned about their feelings.

I find it somewhat amusing, the idea of "free speech." Why does that only apply to saying things that are politically correct. We are forced to love everyone, love everything. There are is no black or white, anymore. No rich, no poor. We are all the same. We all want the same. If that is true, then what are we individually? Nothing.

Teach him stereotyping is a mistake. Perhaps he needs to get out in the world and meet people that aren't all the same as he is.

Of course, teach him. Teach him to conform. Teach him that any personal view he may have regarding race, sex or religion is wrong. He can't have a personal opinion, none of us can.

I see nothing remarkable about that guy's appearance, but apparently your friend did. I think your friend's observation about someone whose appearance is atypical of his experience is a normal human response and neither alarming or offensive. Now if he had treated him rudely because of such differences, that would be puerile. If he had called the FBI merely because of the guy's appearance, that would be xenophobic and puerile.
