Isn't Christmas about Jesus' birthday? He was born in the summer last time I checked, or at least not in December, I love Christmas, but now I'm clueless as to what it's about... anyone know?

Hell, in 'The Boondocks', Huey said it was based off a Roman holiday, but I'm not gonna use that as a source, even if it's true lol.

Besides, Christmas is such a huge holiday in the U.S.A., so are we just celebrating Jesus' birthday really frikin' late or something? I can't imagine such a big holiday based on a frikin' MYTH!

P.S. (for those who don't believe in religion please refrain from saying that religion itself is a myth, I don't want to stray too off topic here.)

That is what happens when inventors of new religions take what they already know and reinterpret it. Or at least in this specific case, make what is already known (a pagan winter solstice festival) to the populace and apply your beliefs to make it more appealing so as to bring in more followers.

And ultimately, Christmas is a wholly commercial holiday now, the only religious connections it shares is through name.

AFAIK, Christmas is just that: Christs' Mass. Mass celebrating Christ. It just happens to fall on the day that we know as December 25th. I think that has something to do with the combining of the Pagan, Christian, and another calendar.

So I guess I'll celebrate my birthday on January 1st instead of July 23rd from now on...

I guess I meant people that don't believe in Christianity specificially, I just didn't want this to be a religion war thread.

I've asked the same question of my religious chaplain where I'm stationed and he explained it that basically its known that he wasn't born on Dec 25th but the celebration of it came around during the time of the romans that you mentionedwas touched onin The Boondocks, that was all true. He was most likely born in September. But the people who celebrate christmas are a traditional sort of people, and we continue to celebrate it dec 25th regardless.

Lol yeah I know, I just was trying to use a 'real world example'. So are you sure we are celebrating his life and not calling today his birthday?

I've always heard that Jesus was born in April. Mostly because of the mention of the Shepards that were out in the field.

I would be so happy if we get a day off for just that reason

I've heard that too. Basically from March-September is when scholars think he was born, because shepards wouldn't be tending their fields in December. The harsh winters in Jerusalem are too cold
