I found the entire film to be quite compelling. The final act where the ballet takes place literally blew me away. Can't believe it's taken me until now to finally see this film. What does OT think?

No. Don't get me wrong, I'd pack their fudge, but they are not the hottest women in Hollywood, no GD way.It became my favorite movie of all time. It has absolutely everything that appeals to me; sexual, poetic, innocence, and dark.

I loved it. Hollywood needs more movies like that which push the creativity bar.Shottayouth13-
We do but then people complain about how boring they are (Tree of Life)

No no no no no no. That movie was utter f*ckery. Push the bar, but don't make it so that people can't understand sh*t.[QUOTE="DharmaMember77"][QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"]I loved it. Hollywood needs more movies like that which push the creativity bar.Shottayouth13-

No no no no no no. That movie was utter f*ckery. Push the bar, but don't make it so that people can't understand sh*t. Well, most people did in fact understand 'The Tree of Life', more people than I originally thought would. The basic premise and themes of the story are rather easy to follow, and the rest just requires a bit of thinking.[QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"][QUOTE="DharmaMember77"]No no no no no no. So what you're saying is movies should strive in trying to be creative yet not become pretentious? Makes perfect sense to me.

Yeah. You can do that without having a 15 minute clip with flashly lights and orchestra that's supposed to depict the 'origins of the universe'.[QUOTE="DharmaMember77"][QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"] I understood it after I read the Wikipedia synopsis but the throughout the entire movie I was just wondering what the hell is going on. If people don't understand the movie, then what's the point? But they do understand the film...you are assuming your own confusion was universal...which it wasn't. As I mentioned a lot of people did in fact understand the film. Most critics and reviewers, even those that didn't like it, ended up drawing the same conclusions as to what most of it meant. And as Dharma said, it is impossible to want more creativity in cinema and not end up with a bit of pretension. It is almost inevitable when people try new things artistically and thematically. It all comes down to the intentions of the director, if they chose to push the bar for the sake of pushing the bar, or if they have a philosophical and emotional attachment to the story and themes. Most people who know of Malick's previous work, general outlook on the world, and even his past would know 'The Tree of Life' is far from pretentious. If people don't understand the movie, then what's the point? Trust me, a large percentage of people did not get the film. It was my first time watching a Malick film though, so maybe that's why I wrote off as I did. I suppose you're right though( about creativity and pretension) but the Tree of Life didn't do much to advance that cause.[QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"][QUOTE="DharmaMember77"]

That is exactly why I wouldn't call it pretentious, because the reason one could say it didn't "advance the cause" was because it is a deeply personal film.
But not sure why I've gotten myself in one of these debates again , it has been out for so long, and is such a polarizing film that to argue about it is typically useless because it, more than perhaps any film released recently, will not be understood or effect everyone equally which is understandable. I do recommend watching more of Malick's films if you haven't already. None are as "experimental" or artistic as 'The Tree of Life' but are fantastic.
Beautifully made, well acted. A million times better than The Fountain lol. Who likes that movie here?? biggest_loser
I haven't but it's a million times better than Requiem for a Dream
