Technically, since porn is classified as "explicit material," and explicit material isn't expressly protected by any (federal?) freedom of information laws, I'm pretty sure you could prohibit this. Right? (Although I don't think he could be arrested).
but really who just watches porn in a libary? i rather be in a room alone so i can at elast do something whilie i watch porn.
And I'm sure that tomorrow, you'll be using this data to "rise against"xaosI see wut u did thar!
I provided this information purely for debating, not for experimental purposes! :xJustPlainLucasWell we can't hold together a debate without some hard evidence.
[QUOTE="JustPlainLucas"]seriously who watches porn in publicDo me a favor, and let's not get carried away with talking about porn itself. I don't want to see this thread locked.
Did you know it's totally within your rights to view pornography in a public library? It's protected by the Free Information Act, so if someone tells you that you can't view porn in a library, legally, your rights are being violated. I work for the Denver Library, and as we were closing down, we passed by a guy who was watching pornography on a public computer. We were both disgusted, but we knew we couldn't actually say anything to him.
This act is in direction conflict with the Child Online Protection Act, which the library strictly enforces. Technically, we're not supposed to allow people to view adult material in areas where children are present. Since children do not stay confined in the children area of the library, this basically means the entire premesis. It used to be that every public computer (except for the childrens' computers) were unfiltered, but a deal was worked out between the Denver Library and the district attorney were we filtered computers in every branch except for a few, so that we weren't in total violation of the Free Information Act. If someone complains about not being able to view porn, we simply direct them to a branch that has unfiltered computers. Also, if someone is viewing porn, and another patron is offended by it, all we can really do is have them move to a different computer, or give the person viewing the material a privacy screen.
I personally detest this. I hate seeing people view porn in public. I think it's disgusting, and although I don't like judging people, I immediately consider those who are doing this as sick and distrubed individuals. What compells someone to watch this in a public place? Wouldn't they feel uncomfortable knowing that people around them are being appauled by them? What's worse is that our Central library, which is of course unfiltered, continously bans people for conducting themselves in inappropriate behavior. Allowing adult material in a public area such as a library is just asking for trouble!
So what do you all think about this? What's your stance on the matter? Are you offended? Would you even care? Do any of you even do this yourselves? :?

My college english teacher lmfao... I saw him in starbucks watching porn on his computer. Seriously wtf lol.
While I firmly believe pornography (and sex in general) is nothing to be offended about, I really don't understand why anyone would want to go to a public library to watch porn. It just strikes me as really weird... :?
Welcome to the world of fetishes! I do not think that porn should be allowed to be viewed in public, you should only be able to view it in private. ZombiefiedZomB
Yea some laws don't make no sense. Like you can not be in public with any alcohol label showing you have to have it in a paper bag or something but yet you can watch porn in public I don't quit uunderstand.

Um...you can't drink in public, even if it is in a paper bag. :| Unless it's like an event or something with authorization to sell and allow for alcoholic consumption on the premises.[QUOTE="ralphster"] seriously who watches porn in publicrawsavonI have to go with this. I mean I watch it (not going to lie about it) -but I only watch it in oder to 'accomplish the mission' Why the hell would anyone want to watch it in public? -seems like they are just doing it to bother people/get a reaction...or they have a serious addiction If they don't have internet access at home.
[QUOTE="rawsavon"] Why the hell would anyone want to watch it in public? -seems like they are just doing it to bother people/get a reaction...or they have a serious addictionJustPlainLucasIt could very well be a sexual addiction, some kind of psychological disorder. It always makes me go WTF when I get an email alerting us about a patron who has been handling himself behind a computer desk. :?
I get the feeling..... when I was in med school, some people were caught watching porn on the library.... :o
In the end it's voyeurism.....some people get excited for doing something, while not illegal, morally not accepted.

Yeah there are some addictions/fetishes that a person has to be in a certain situation to be aroused. For some it's even a compulsion that they feel they must do this at a certain location or a certain way. It's kind of uncomfortable to think of it, but that's the truth.
I had a similar run in with this old guy who was looking at softcore porn of young men (around 18 though it looked younger). I literally just stood still looking at the pictures in disgust but at the same time shock just right behind him and he didn't even notice. This was the first time this has every happened to me so I had no idea what to do. I hesitated and told the library lady about it. She checked but confirmed he wasn't doing anything but knew about the problem already from other complaints, noting that he was a regular. Shealso told me that he had every right to do so but could also inform him to stop if it was bothering other people in the library.
It was just a terrible moment that added up on a terrible day for me. Worst was that kids go around the area with their parents (there are computers on desks). But there was no evidence he was looking up of younger boys. I'm not sure and there is no crime for an old man looking up 18 year old homosexual males. At the time, I was just disgusted that it was happening in my library and maybe I just over-reacted. But still, it's disturbing that he's doing it in a public library.

As a librarian, If I see someone doing this inside my library, I will not tell them to get off, I will kick their head into the computer screen. Seriously, what do you think those people would say if you asked them why they were doing it? Ugh.tylergamereview
What is wrong with watching porn in public?
So long as the subjects are of legal age, it doesn't matter who is looking up what.I had a similar run in with this old guy who was looking at softcore porn of young men (around 18 though it looked younger). It's perverse. It can make other people uncomfortable. It's just something that shouldn't be done. What is wrong with watching porn in public?

I think that it's something you should watch on your own, especially if you're going to make it obvious that you are watching something like that it may be legal but think about younger children and people who don't want to be exposed to that. I find nothing wrong with porn overall, it's just something to watch on your own time haha :P
So... you're saying it's wrong for me to venture to my local internet cafe with kleenex and hand cream? But where should I watch it? If I look at home my wife might see me! I wondered why people looked at me funny and now I know!I personally detest this. I hate seeing people view porn in public. On topic - do people really do this?! That's amazing. I have no idea why you would ever want to and I've never seen anywone view porn in public anywhere.
One other thing, just because something is legal doesn't make it right. The Bold and the Beautiful is a legal TV show but that doesn't make it ok. :D
