Okay, after reading a bunch of superhero books, re-reading some old comics, replaying Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and the new upcoming Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, I have been extremely interested in superheroes in general. After I had done some research, I realized I had done the impossible: I missed out on Watchmen (both the movie and graphic novels).

Now, here's the dilemna: My local library is not carrying any Watchmen books, and all the motion comics on iTunes, Live, and PSN seem a bit overpriced so I have been looking to the movie for some salvation. Just a few questions for the fans:

1. Was the movie pretty accurate to the graphic novel?

2. Should I go for the movie or book?

Oh yeah, I might add that I'm a big fan of anti-heroes so would I enjoy this?:

Based on what you said, you should like it.

Buy the book (trust me, you'll be going back to it alot). After you finished it, Rent the movie (blueray if you can). The film isn't as good or better than the book, but still good and you'll got alot more out of it if you read the book first.

I watched it on a plane. While watching I thought to myself, "what in the hell is this?" After getting off the plane and seeing a poster with a picture of the blue man on it, I discovered its title: Watchmen.

Don't you have a bookstore near your house? Go buy the graphic novel, read that and if you liked the book a ton watch the movie, but you could always skip the movie, it was good but nothing spectacular.

Buy the book (you're going to want to read it numerous times). The film didn't do the book justice. It barely even scratched the depths of the novel.

You should definately read the book. You'll love it. As for the movie I personally love it, but it's not anywhere near as good as the book.

The movie was as accurate to the book as it could be given time constraints. It cut out some of the smaller, unnecessary parts that didn't factor into the man story too much. You should enjoy Watchmen, but I suggest going the book route before seeing the movie. It'll mesh a lot better.

I don't think there was a lack of information in the movie. Maybe I missed some tiny bits, but everything was brought together pretty straight-forward. I agree the book must come first, though, even if the movie would suffice.

I thought the movie was very try to the book, I mean they can only do so much and they did A LOT in Watchmen. Its like the pages jumped on to the screen, looks fantastic on bluray too.

It's hard to believe Border's doesn't have it. I recommend waiting till you can read the book. Just stay as far away as possible from the motion comics. Not worth it.

1. NO! Goddamn piece of **** was a train wreck.

2. Book times a million. Never see the movie. If a friend ever asks if you'd like to watch it, politely decline and shoot him in the face.

3. Very much so. Even if you weren't, you'd have be mentally deprived not to enjoy Watchmen.

Well they didn't have any copies, and I waited for 30 minutes for 10 employees that looked for it, but they never found it. I thought the motion comics sounded a bit overpriced.

Well, I just checked up on my local borders, and they said they're going to order the book, and it'll take 1 week at the least.

Now here's my new question: Should I go ahead and watch the movie then read the book or vice versa?

I didn't think the movie was a trainwreck...I mean, it was certainly a better adaptation than the same director did with 300. I can see where you could be annoyed by them leaving out the comic side-story/news shack scenes, but they did a relatively accurate job otherwise. At least, in my opinion.

Read the book first. Then rent the movie (Bluray if you can) There's an uncut versian, but both are the same in quality IMO

Wait for the book. :) It'll be better that way. In situations like this, it's almost always better to go source material--->adaptation

Book first. Although I suggest you watch the movie eventually you should wait until after you've read the book...twice.

Can you explain how that ending made any sense?
Dr. M couldn't be killed, everyone knew that. Why would they bother joining forces to destroy an invincible man?
Well, it made semi-sense.
Basically, Watchmen was already running incredibly long for a feature film. Did they have time to put in the scenes revolving around Ozymandias' island of test subjects where he was engineering that squid? If they didn't go into enough detail, it would have completely baffled any viewers unfamiliar with the source material, and going into too much detail would spoil the ending. So in that case, to make a feasible movie ending out of it, it required changing. The change from a squid to Dr manhattan-esque attacks gives it a rather easy explanation that can quickl tie into the story and make sense for the viewers, while keeping intact the same vibe that the book's ending gave. Sure, Dr M is invincible, but he was created by science, and if there's one thing I've learned about world leaders in the past, it's that they can be ambitious to an illogical degree (see: fight on terrorism...where countries declare war on an idea...as if it could be erased from existence). Does it mesh perfectly with Wacthmen's story? No, it leaves some holes here and there, but they're imperceptible to normal viewers and incredibly minor IMHO, and considering the fact that it has to be fit into a feature film's time constraints, and not a TV miniseries, I'll cut it some slack. The book's ending was very well though out, but really cheesy in the choice of a squid-like alien creature. The movie's ending makes much more sense for a movie audience and is more efficient with the movie's duration while keeping the same atmosphere about it. So yeah, it made sense for what was included in the movie. In the context of the book, it makes less sense than the original, but at the same time, the original ending would have been tough to implement in a movie. At least, that's my take on it.
Sorry for the crap formatting, but Gamespot doesn't allow spoiler tagged paragraphs. They require it to be all on one block.
