I went to a wedding yesterday and I was alienated from the get go because the priestly marrier guy decided to make us all sing praise to god to start it off...wtf? I've never been to church in my life...but that doesn't mean I don't believe in god...

I understand that people view marriage as a promise before god but is it really necessary to MAKE everyone pray to YOUR god to get married?

I had to leave early because I was quite literally made ill by the non-stop "praise be to JESUS!" and this other BS. In the end I realized that I have no idea why these people wanted to be together other than the fact that...Jesus told them to be together?

How can people be happy knowing that lives can never be expanded or changed because Jesus is the only way? I would go crazy because all progessive thinking stops when you accept a static life.

So...Would you ever vow to spend your life someone and use passages from the Bible to express those vows? Or would you let your love be your vows and speak from your heart? Or would you just never get married?

BTW I've been to weddings before...it's never been like this. We had to pray for about a half hour during the reception...that's when I left.

I would speak from my heart; I am not a Christian and do not desire for something else to express my feelings for me--especially not something two thousand years old....

It's normal. They're getting married inside God's church, so it's obvious it would become religious.

I don't get it.. You went to a church.. and you didn't expect any worship? You didn't expect them to pray? I've been to a couple of weddings and the priest always preached before the couple took their vows, it's almost like a normal Sunday morning.

I wouldn't. However, it's their wedding they can do whatever they want.

I agree with the TC in many respects, but not that this is an unusual example of a church wedding. I agree that it is ridiculuos to demand of your guests that they conform to your belief system through the process of the ceremony, and the 30 minute prayer sounds absolutely ludicrous, but this i almost a typical experience of a church wedding. particularly a more conservative church.
