Houses make noises, Especially at night when the temperature is dropping and things like wood floor boards begin to contract. I hear noises all the time, if its something significant like someone could be breaking in i get out of bed and turn on the lights... its never anything.
Your imagination is running wild.

I used to have rats and squirrels hanging around outside, and they'd get in through the roof and make their way into the walls. Sometimes I could actually hear some big epic battles going on. I'd hear stuff bumping and thrashing around in the walls, I'd hear screaming and squealing. And then suddenly everything would go quiet. Sometimes after such an event, the entire house would start to stink a few days later, as the fallen rodent soldiers began to decay.
In any case, I'm glad that no visitors ever heard that. Because it's sort of hard to explain that **** in a satisfactory manner. Like, I've got a sexy lady at my place and the home erupts into this loud explosion of noise. She gets concerned and asks, "what the hell is that?!" Meanwhile I comfort her by saying, "don't worry, that's just the rats having a big battle inside the walls."
I mean, you can pass that off as ghosts, or an intruder in your home. That's dangerous and scary. Basically the only way to minimize the threat is to just flat out say that it's just a bunch of rats fighting inside the walls. And somehow, that's also sort of the WORST thing you could possibly say.
seems like the only logical solution is to buy a bunch of those plastic cocktail swords and leave them around the place and try to start an arms race... let them kill themselves off.
