Though in all honesty I get what you mean but it still upsets me to have humans meddling with nature in ways like this.ZevianderWe are nature. Is our meddling not a result of evolution and the natural order of things? This really has little to do with meddling though, but ridiculously stupid people being stupid. If anything, our meddling has saved more species from extinction than what has been killed off.
Â
Yeah, we saved the buffalo from kaput.
]lmao who claimed that?ZevianderBe nice if he had clarified and not been so vague. Eh I think his post was understood.....by most anyway.
And it's all because of humans. If it weren't for humans, the dinosaurs would still be here.
This doesn't affect me, other than I'll never try Western Black Rhino steaks
It is a great shame that these animals are becoming extinct not because of their inability to adapt to a changes in the enviroment but because of the ignorance of yokels. yeah, it's quite sad it happened because of a myth that the horns cured cancer, that's right up there with raping virgins to cure AIDS
There are only an estimated 29,000 rhinos remaining worldwide. The animals are coveted in certain countries due to the false belief that their horns can cure or fend off cancer. Poachers have capitalized on this superstition and dehorned thousands of the animals in multiple countries even in national parks.The_Power_of_X
And who's to say they wouldn't have gone extinct on their own? That's dumb logic. Let's just exterminate every single animal on the planet because "who's to say they wouldn't have gone extinct on their own?"Â

Oh please, he was just pointing out that this was a completely manmade problem.Aljosa23

When the aliens arrive during the great harvest, I hope you rhinophobes are the first ones to volunteer.SolidSnake35Well I ain't no Rhinophobe, is that good or bad?
We are nature. Is our meddling not a result of evolution and the natural order of things? This really has little to do with meddling though, but ridiculously stupid people being stupid. If anything, our meddling has saved more species from extinction than what has been killed off.Not really. At least not in terms of health and balance. We're effectively super predators in extremely large numbers. Typically in a predator/prey scenario the predator population will begin to diminish as they devour enough of their prey that their population can no longer sustain itself. Then the prey population increases and the cycle repeats. In this case, we're hunting not to sustain ourselves but to sell their horns on the black market. When the population is gone the poachers simply move on to the next animal. We're really in a pretty unique position. How we should react to that, I'm not sure, but denying that it's the case dangerous. No-one ever argued it wasn't a unique situation. Humans are a part of nature, that's simply the definition of Nature. Thus, this extinction is completely natural.

Though in all honesty I get what you mean but it still upsets me to have humans meddling with nature in ways like this.mattbbpl

Animals become extint and are then replaced by another stronger one. Just waiting for humans to be replaced...

No, not necessarily. Often "survival of the fittest" has very little to do with strength.
Well by anyone who could adapt to that environment comfortably, not necessarily stronger than everyone else.Unless people and organizations are willing to dump a hella lot of cash into preservation, expect this sort of thing to happen to all the other endangered large African animals. Developed countries have trouble keeping their endangered species alive and that's with significant conservationist movements, try to imagine what it's like doing the same thing in an impoverished region with sh!tty law enforcement.

But the only reason they have become extinct is because of human interference Did you even watch the video? The vast majority of species have gone extinct way before humans even existed. And species go extinct day by day regardless of human activity. But I'm not talking about the majority of extinct species. I'm talking about the Western Black Rhino. Sure species disappear all the time, it's just sad when they're gone because of humans (poachers in particular).I'm just gonna leave this here:
So entire species being erradicated over the f'ing braindead idea their horns are magical is an ok and expected outcome?
Wasdie
No it's quite idiotic, but it still stands that humanity is much higher up on the food chain and has the ability to wipe out other species as it so pleases. Not saying it is right to do so. Don't try to put words in my mouth.
That said, I'm not about to start some internet crusade about it as I can't really do anything about what people in other nations do. I myself don't go shooting up animals and drive them to extinction nor does my nation allow that to be done anymore and has a lot of laws to protect wildlife. Not much more I can do so I'm not going to get all up in arms about it.Â
It's sad, but what exactly can we do about it posting on an internet forum?
I didn't put any words in your mouth...you brushed it off as an expected and natural outcome. As far as what to do about it, if you don't want to do anything that's fine of course. But there are things that can be done, and in fact things that people all over the world do in response to this kind of stuff.
We don't know that the earth will be here long after humans are gone. Also, sometimes the extinction of one species is conducive to the rise of a new species. In my biology class I had to give a persuasive speech on a topic of my choosing and I took species extinction once upon a time.
Basically, Earth was here long before we were and will be here long after we are gone. 99.99% of all life that has ever existed has gone extinct. This, however does not mean we shouldn't care when current species go extinct due to humans. I, for one, like it when more varied species exist. How cool would it have been to see a tasmanian tiger? Will our grandchildren's grandchildren be able to see a live bison or galopagos tortoises or cheatahs or tigers?
The world will be very boring if all we have are cockroaches, cows, pigs, pigeons and squirrels.
GummiRaccoon
F*ck off. Seriously. You are the problem.Boo friggin hoo. It's a rhino, who gives a crap? Species go extinct all the time.

An entire species ceases to exist for all of eternity...

Pretty much, I don't see how anyone can consider this a good thing. Â I think it makes them feel like keyboard badasses to shrug off any misfortune in the world as something that doesn't affect them, and that they therefore show ambivalence toward.
People with statistics saying 99.9% of species to ever exist are extinct, are missing the point. Â We evolved to our position today as a top of the food chain species through a series of random occurence and luck. Â We didn't earn this, we lucked out. Â The mere fact that life even formed on our planet was lucky. Â It is a tired cliche, but with great power comes great responsibility.
So what animals have gone extinct throughout time? Â We can do something about it now, and we should. Â It used to be that the bubonic plague was a death sentence and wiped out huge populations throughout Europe. Â Now it's a trivial and easily treatable disease.
Acting as though just because something happened in the past that we should do nothing to prevent it in the present is poor logic. Â In fact it is at odds with the concept of progress and the betterment of our world.
Well then fortunately I'm not a human, I'm an alien. :PAnimals become extint and are then replaced by another stronger one. Just waiting for humans to be replaced...

We earned it as much as any species on this planet has ever earned their place.
