read the harry potters, seems to be a trend. Me personally, being 16, enjoyed the "Sweep" Series (a more realistic wicca/magic novel series) I don't read much anymore.

Your dad is lieing. LOTR isnt hard to read, its just long. Tolkien is has a very descriptive writing style. If you read LOTH, the Silmarilian is a good one to follow.

the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman
including "The Golden Compass," "The Subtle Knife," and "The Amber Spyglass."

also, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury. He's my favorite author, and this is my favorite book by him.

and "The Book Theif" by Markus Zuzak. i got that for my birthday, and loved it.

+1 Those are great books.

I would also recommend anything by Michael Crichton.

Your mom needs to know life isn't an RPG. You can't grind knowledge by readinga bunch of books.

My recommendation? The Godfather. Greatest book I've ever read.

If you like Tom Clancy and games I would suggest Rainbow six (very long the games are actually based off the book) and the splinter cell books. Also the Bourne novels are amazing and nothing like the movies. (they were written in the 80s and 90s btw)

At 16 when my reading scores were in their prime (booya!) I was reading almost exclusively Tom Clancy. "Rainbow Six" (of course) got me into his books. My favorite is "Cardinal of the Kremlin."

I am now reading more political things, but am currently reading all I can by the awesome author in my sig, HP Lovecraft. "The Colour Out of Space" scared the crap out of me. The monster itself is not scary, it is the way he describes it and such. I am reading "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" right now (he wrote a ton of short stories) which the game "Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth" is based off of (for the most part).

I remember reading LOTOR for 5 pages and all they did was walk down a trail no conversations or anything. So that's just a good idea of how descriptive he is. But he is an amazing writer

Anything by Edgar Allen Poe...seriously, Also, the Count of Monte Cristo is good, even if you don't understand the allegories involved, it's still is a great action book. If you're into more upper crust reading I'd suggest The Scarlet Letter, The Odyssey, and Farenheit 451 are all very well-written, lots-to-learn books.

funny, i ended getting that lol. even though it is kinda similar to old-fashioned victorian, i remember seeing bits of a movie, and thought it was really interesting, so i checked that out. i read farenheit 451, that wasn't bad, and im really into roman/greek stuff, going into my 5th year of latin when school starts, will be my junior year. and please keep the recommendations coming:).

as mentioned before, Frank Herber's Dune series is good. I really enjoyed the Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice's series starting with Interview with a vampire. The 2nd book, The Vampire Lestat, was the only book i've ever been hooked on. I was thinking about it at work and couldn't wait ot get home to read it.

Books don't make you smarter, nothing does, although if you're, say, 2-8 years old it will provide a very small boost. That said they will improve your vocabularly. Anyway, I'd recommend:

  • Alas, Babylon
  • 1984
  • Animal Farm (what can I say I'm a big fan of Orwell)
  • Heart of Darkness (only read if you're good at appreciating literature because that's the only way you're going to be entertained by this book, much less understand it. Explicitly, there isn't much there. The story develops for the most part through the book's heavy use of symbolism and other literary devices which is why its such an amazing book. As a plus, if you're looking to improve your vocab, this is the book to read. However, it may be too hard of a read for the average 16 year old)
  • Life of Pi
  • Anything by Stephen King (I'm also a big King fan. Personally I'd recommend the Dark Tower series. That by itself should fill up whatever is left of your summer)
  • Fast Food Nation

That's all I can think of for right now
