Fast Food Nation is my required summer reading.Books don't make you smarter, nothing does, although if you're, say, 2-8 years old it will provide a very small boost. That said they will improve your vocabularly. Anyway, I'd recommend:
- Alas, Babylon
- 1984
- Animal Farm (what can I say I'm a big fan of Orwell)
- Heart of Darkness (only read if you're good at appreciating literature because that's the only way you're going to be entertained by this book, much less understand it. Explicitly, there isn't much there. The story develops for the most part through the book's heavy use of symbolism and other literary devices which is why its such an amazing book. As a plus, if you're looking to improve your vocab, this is the book to read. However, it may be too hard of a read for the average 16 year old)
- Life of Pi
- Anything by Stephen King (I'm also a big King fan. Personally I'd recommend the Dark Tower series. That by itself should fill up whatever is left of your summer)
- Fast Food Nation
That's all I can think of for right now

FFN is a great book, you should enjoy reading it unless you're one of those teens that just can't stand to read anything. Funny thing is, when I read it it actually made me want to eat fast food more. Sad, I know.
1984, animal farm, anything by chuck palahniuk (watch fight club to understand why)
harry potter is entertaining, but dont read it if your looking to come out of your reading with a different perceptiona and expansion of your culture and mind.
The Hardy Boys: Hazed.. Or any Hardy Boys book for that matter there is alot of them they have been around since like 1927 but they keep coming out with new ones and I think they are good books if your into detective/adventure books.
Also Cell by Stephen King is pretty good or any of his books.
i wanna read The Snows of Killamanjaro cuz it sounds interesting...the thing is that i hate reading. but i still might read it.The___OoofMich
For you I suggest you read Rumble Fish or The Outsiders

eh? why? wat are those books?[QUOTE="TigerFangRed"]Anything by Edgar Allen Poe...seriously, Also, the Count of Monte Cristo is good, even if you don't understand the allegories involved, it's still is a great action book. If you're into more upper crust reading I'd suggest The Scarlet Letter, The Odyssey, and Farenheit 451 are all very well-written, lots-to-learn books.strat505
funny, i ended getting that lol. even though it is kinda similar to old-fashioned victorian, i remember seeing bits of a movie, and thought it was really interesting, so i checked that out. i read farenheit 451, that wasn't bad, and im really into roman/greek stuff, going into my 5th year of latin when school starts, will be my junior year. and please keep the recommendations coming:).
451 was alright, but a book in the same genre that is much better is 1984. So if it interested you at all...get 1984.[QUOTE="monsternachoman"][QUOTE="The___OoofMich"]i wanna read The Snows of Killamanjaro cuz it sounds interesting...the thing is that i hate reading. but i still might read it.The___OoofMich

I found the novel to be quite bad at the end. The anime is much better.

eh? why? wat are those books? They are both about gangs, fighting and stuff.. The story in both books are pretty good. Plus they dont have like 500 pages.. The Outsiders is like 200 pages and Rumble Fish is about the same.
