American education is messed up (as of now), you get forced education, crappy food(some) and really rude(or way too strict) teachers, don't forget the bullying also. Not even can a 8th grader know simple math. I am glad I started in Mexico.

My daughter graduated from HS last year and she already have differential calculus under her belt along with some college-level courses.

Not a big fan of standardized testing. However, some schools do succeed in helping and teaching their students while others fail so it depends on many factors such as socioeconomic status and motivation.

Well, at least they have great universities. If I recall correctly like 70/80 of the top 100 universities in the world are in the US.

While certain elements like the Common Core standards and Standardized Testing as a way of accurately measuring performance are controversial, not sure you can generalize by saying all US schools suck.

Ritual burnings of calculators abound throughout middle America. Something must be done - it's time for:

I hate my school, as someone who is going to be a HS sophomore soon. The teachers are mostly jerks, the food sucks, and its damn depressing. Barely passed algebra this year too. Probably because I could barely get along with the teacher!

If you go to a private school or a public school that is well funded you'll get a top notch education. If not you're screwed.

The concept of public education is fine but the execution is wrong. Math class should be nothing like English. The reason the students are bored and inattentive is because they're doing the exact same thing 8 hours a day, just on different topics, for 12 years.

I never had any cool courses because the school I went was in debt and so many amazing teachers were laid off. They had to cut corners and were on a tight budget. It was a horrible HS experience for me and the kids were stupid. I've always hated these stupid standards from the start and the forced education courses with very little options.

Couldn't that translate to good students and shit students? Quite honestly, the schools are fine. It's the students who are crap.

i guess what i was getting at is that in some respects US kids look at school as a big fucking burden on their special little lives.

That's it.

I already warned my kid about how students abroad take their studies seriously even though their schools are a lot less equipped than US schools. They're coming and they will be very competitive. She can't slack off now.

I told my kid not to drop herself to the same level as her peers. Just because they want to slack off doesn't mean she should too.

Do you learn anything at least? Australian schools are pretty shitty too when it comes to actually getting an education.

Then you should probably retract your previous statement. It's one thing to say that some (or even many) 8th graders don't know basic math. It's an entirely different thing to state that "not even can an 8th grader know basic math."

Yep.

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying that there aren't problems with schools in the USA. But I've repeatedly gotten this sentiment of many parents being pissed off that their kids aren't learning enough in school. They'll then fume about the situation and ask why the school isn't teaching their kids anything. And SOMETIMES it boils down to "because your kid doesn't give a shit about learning."

Do schools in the USA have problems? Sure. But let's also realize that sometimes it is the student that is the problem. Teachers cannot make a student learn when that student does not want to learn. Furthermore, I'm of the opinion that the teacher shouldn't even TRY to make that student learn if the student doesn't want to learn. All that effort going down the drain is time that could have been spent with the students who actually give a shit about their educations.

When I think of American schools I think of guns, guns for everyone. On a serious note I have the impression that American Private schools must be great and public schools not so great.
