Modern rock is rock from the 1990's to present. What do you mean by modern rock? 1990's, 2000's ? Do you mean modern rock as opposed to what is commonly called classic rock (1970's/80's)?

Eh...I include the 80's merely because rock became more divergent. 80's rock is alternative which is different from the so called cIassic rock. What do you mean by modern rock? 1990's, 2000's ? I listened to a bit of anything on the radio. It wasn't until I discovered The Cure, though, that my music interests expanded. And by that....I mean non related genres as well. Of course now, I don't listen to anything on the radio.LJS9502_basicThe Cure was formed in 1976.

The Killers was the first band that I actually liked and pretty much got me into music. Their debut album was the first album I ever bought on my own, and today they are still my favorite band.

Oh gosh...I guess it all started around 1979-80 with Joy Division and then stuff like Shriekback, Oingo Boingo, Kate Bush, & Cocteau Twins kind of sealed the deal for me.
blink-182 and to a lesser extent Sum 41. I don't think I really listen to any "classic" rock bands though.
The oldest band in my library is probably Dinosaur Jr (first around in the mid 80's I think?)
I have been listening to "modern" rock...well...since the late seventies! Then it was The Ramones, U2 and the Sex Pistols! As for the 90's, hmmmm, I was listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Fluid. A whole wack of So-cal punk! Social Distortion for one!(my avatar currently)mmmmmmm, I'd have to go downstairs to my music room, names fail me...The Descendants. (All not all), Ohh oh oh, Rage against the machine!...and many more! Lollapalooza, where have ye gone?

 This coming from the guy who argued that a band can only be identified with the decade in which they started.
For me it was Radiohead.
