Is it because of bullying? Influence of the media or something else? I ask this partially because it has to do with a film story I am developing but mostly because i am curious what you guys think?

They probably have really huge anger issues and will just snap with anything that someone says, no matter how minor...

Blame it on the parents. Why don't these kids have anyone to trust and talk to? Because their parents are busy. How do they get guns? From their parents/grandparents who are busy and don't notice the gun is gone. And if the bully's parents were doing their job, the bullying would be stopped. It is all because of the lazy, overindulgent parents that don't discipline their children or take the time to listen to them. Citrus25

Sorry, but that's a load of crap, because even good parents have rotten children.

I agree, parents can't really dominate everything when child comes to teen age.

I think its a mixture, mainly. Media, bad parenting, bullying/feeling like the outcast, mental problems, (both invoked by before mentioned things or just born with it) and maybe a few other reasons sprinkled on top depending on the person. To say one or the other is the main reason, I think is incorrect, from what I've read and seen, it is usually two or more common factors that fabricate the reason why they decided to shoot up the place.

One child could be mentally ill play a violent video game, (which a parent should have been careful not to let their child have it if they know they may take it as literal, but of course the child/teenager could have played it from another source) and decided to reinact said game.

Another person could be fed of bullying from both parents and peers alike and just decided to end it in a seriously violent way.

My point being, it's impossible to lump all school shootings or even future ones for the same reason they occurred, most are triggered differently than others from what I've seen.

Well this week actually at one of the secondary schools in a town near me, some boy stabbed another boy four times with a kitchen knife during a tech class (apparently it took four other boys with blocks of wood to beat the stabber back) and from what I've heard, the boy did it because he had been bullied for years by the boy he stabbed.

Societal influence in a very broad sense. Unchecked rage is a necessity, and this rage typically stems from how an individual is treated by other people. This allows the individual to overcome the revulsion most people would feel at the idea of indiscriminately killing other humans, because he no longer sees the individuals as humans, but as mere symbols of the torment he has endured at the hands of certain people or groups of people. In essence, he comes to hate humanity itself... and that's an incredibly dangerous state of mind to be in if you happen to have access to lethal weapons and an enviroment where no one has a legitimate means of self-defense.

Mental instability and a predisposition towards violence will make an individual an even greater threat. Then all you need is the means to do it, and a firearm rights obsessed Western world provides ample opportunity for a rage-filled, unstable individual to acquire a means of coldly murdering his schoolmates with ease, offering little to no chance that said schoolmates could fight back.

I pretty much agree. I think most people have been bullied, but the common link in a lot of the school shootings I've read about is that the shooter was heavily bullied, including regularly being physically assaulted. When you're bullied and you have no one to help you out, you're basically getting hung out to dry. In that person's eyes, others in the school know he/she is getting attacked, but don't do anything, or sometimes even take part in it. It kind of de-humanizes the school population for the person being bullied, and when he/she snaps, all he/she only sees targets. It's a perfect storm of bullying, teacher/student apathy, and social hierarchy in schools. At least two of those three can be improved upon dramatically, which makes it that much more unfortunate when something like this happens. It's 100% preventable.
