This is basically a survey thread where people can post their opinions, critiques or simple thoughts about the current target nation. Of course, this might spark certain debates(healthy debates I hope and not just random flaming and trolling) which otherwise requires an open mind.

TODAY's TARGET: AMERICA

Economy is in tatters, bad social welfare, high level of unemployment, huge religious right and a big culture of fear.

Can't really comment on the people since I haven't met a lot of Americans. But overall not a place I'd like to live in or visit.

Having been there several times. I find regular folk seem to be comfortably ignorant. Everything there is larger...almost as if it's a statement. The only commercials I ever see on American TV are either one of the following: Need a x-type lawyer? Need an substandard educational institution? Need insurance of x variety? Need a drug with wxyz side effects? Need to lose weight fast? Maybe the occasional different one. It's f#cking creepy. Nice people/place, depending on where. Too ran by media imo.

When the religious right can pass laws that forces the teachings of Creationism a purely religious doctrine into a science cIass I'd say that the religious right has more power than it should. As for the culture of fear, I am not commenting on the people I am commenting on the high murder rate, news broadcasts (yes we get CNN and Fox News over here) and the sort of television that reaches the masses (for example Cops.)

And when I meant "the people" I mean the average person on the street or in the supermarket, not the things that gets coverage on TV or on the news.

We get it, you hate people saying America is the evil empire of the world. But America isn't the perfect flower you think it is, hell even Australia, Canada, UK isn't perfect.

No country in the world has a law as secular as the United State's First Amendment.

Even predominately atheist countries like Japan have restrictions towards free expression.

I don't care much for America. I think the country was built on a strong moral foundation by great men.. but is descending into a foolish and ignorant place. I personally think the founding fathers would be turning in their graves if they saw the state of the nation.

They seem to focused on policing the world when their own country is in tatters with a myriad of problems. I think they have their priorities all wrong just like the majority of the world, they aren't alone in that. What makes them more annoying however is that they believe they are superior in some ways when they really and truly aren't.

The problem with the US is that it's such a place of opposite extremes. So many people are in dire circumstances yet they somehow find the finances to start wars abroad. They produce too much pointless entertainment and are losing grip of their educational and intellectual foundation. They need to turn off MTV and wake the hell up in my opinion. There is simply too much commercialism and mindless consumption in that country.

However, I do think its a country built on something great. Their deep love of liberty albeit disappearing in todays climate is still inspiring and I do think most people are simply unaware of what's going on in their name.. probably because of what I previously mentioned. Many problems they face are global problems.

To conclude.. America I don't know what I feel about you. You show signs of brilliance but you also need to clean yourself up.

Well here in 'murrica, a southern gentleman can drive his cadillac up to a burger king drive through and say "Well now.. Sir, I DO believe I'll have a slice o' your PECAN PIE, now i'd also like a cup o' MINT JU-LIP TEA!" All dressed up like colonel sanders, yeah that's 'murrica in a few sentances. :P

All about the election, all the time, even when its not IT IS. And when it is IT SORTA ISN'T BECAUSE IT IS!

Every social, economic, foreign issue has been because of elections, for better or for worse.

EDIT: But there is no where I'd rather live. I love being in this country, I don't love everything it does, or how it runs a lot of its systems, but I love what it has done for me. I complain, but I love the US.

I've always thought that the ignorant image of some Americans being excessively over-protective and overly-defensive over even the slightest criticism of American society was merely just a caricature and a stereotype with no basis in reality.

A country of extremes. Successful and productive, yet pompous and decadent at the same time. It depends on where you look I guess. For instance, I admire their guarantee of freedom of expression, but I despise the money-driven thinking that seems to be so prevalent in their culture (and as a result in Western culture as a whole). Another example is that I admire their ambition, but I'm not a fan of interventionalist international politics, so I'm not a fan of US foreign policy either.

It's a weird country, and it's impossible to have one uniform opinion on it. I will say that I probably wouldn't wanna live there.

I think that people blindly hate America because America's so involved in the world. Imagine how much people would hate us if we didn't support/do business with other countries overseas. It's like a lose-lose situation for a lot of people.

For some reason the incredibly stupid get all the limelight and it always makes me double-take when I actually see Americans who aren't that way. Obviously I know not all Americans are stupid, but as I said they are in the limelight and it's hard not to generalise with such a population.

You essentially praised the founding fathers. We have done quite a bit of productive "meddling" since their time.

I think American society is heading in the wrong direction. I'd like the markets to be free, the gangs and ghettos to change for the better, and morals and values to play a larger part in peoples lives.

Other than that, it is absolutely huge so you can always find a place that is far away from everyone else allowing you to basically do anything you want.

No, Canadians are American sensibilities crossed with European idealism, so by default everyone hates them. In other words, love of black-metal and crazy stuff, believe that their country is the greatest place ever while at the same time hating it with a deep, deep passion, are freakishly kind yet want to destroy you, discernible accents that range from the classic "eh?" thing to nearly Upper State New York Accents in Toronto, and are most often bland as all hell.
