I call it gravy and most of my fellow Italian friends call it gravy. I joke around with my Irish friends that their vote doesn't count cause their not Italian. :P * EDITED to say pasta instead of macaroni so people don't get confused.

I never had red stuff in my macaroni. the only thing i get in the macaroni box is noodle's and a sack of cheese, and you mix it with butter.

Sauce. Gravy is brown and goes on beef, chicken, and turkey. Sauce goes on noodles.

Well, I am Italian, and I have noticed that if you are East Coast, it is definitely gravy. Everywhere else it is sauce.

My mom is a NYC native. I was born in Denver, but I like to think of myself as indirectly East Coast. People from back there tell me that I have the look and mentality about me... especially after I have been drinking...

I should also note that in Goodfellas they call it both gravy and sauce. I paid close attention to that and I'm sure they knew people would pay attention to that so they said gravy and sauce so everyone would be happy.

Not sure I follow what you mean.

I know exactly what you mean!!! My mom takes pride in the cooking!!! The mere mentioning of ketchup on your pasta is sacrilege... kind of reminds me of the end of Goodfellas when Ray Liotta is talking about how he ordered Spaghetti with Marinara and got egg noodles with ketchup!

not the whiteboy, kraft mac-n-cheese that you people are used to... macaroni is kind of like the generic expression for pasta, whether it be ziti, fettuccini, spaghetti, etc...

Gravy is almost exclusive to parts of the East Coast, and to be honest, sounds really weird to a lot of people outside of that region. But I think everyone would know what you were talking about because of context. What do you guys call the gravy you put on biscuits then?

its friggen pasta sauce, the red can be attributed to the tomatoes in it...

and i dunno how or why people would call it gravy because it literally is not gravy that is just stupid

gravy is a combination of stock (chicken, beef, vegetable, etc), fat, and flour.

Almost all of the Italians I know around me (Philly) call it gravy but I call it sauce. Gravy is the brown stuff.

Gravy's a sauce. I would call the stuff on pasta tomato sauce though. That's probably what it is.
