It seems to be, by default, correct, but it's too depressing of a worldview for me to adhere to.

coolbeans90

By Default? Nihilism goes against all intuition it is hardly default.

No it doesn't; without being taught morals from birth, we don't have a system of morals. No right, no wrong, no inherent value, etc.

Hmm I think many atheists would disagree with that.

I can see its merit and appeal, but I personally dislike it. Thus, I'm not a nihilist.

has there ever been a case of that? I've heard of certain feral children but I think we all have an intrinsic system of morality as Saint Paul says, even if that image is scarred.

Well you're probably right. Without the influence of religion, people would lean toward nihilism. I think that's what Nietzsche said.

Even as I try to find meaning in life, I just can't. I think I've always been somewhat of a nihilist all my life, looking at people as "sheep" who just follow the herd. I never understood how someone could be passionate about life, even with the possibility of a higher being present. It seems we are all enslaved to a system set up by "the man" to control us...forcing us to be schooled (or face unemployment) until we are 18-22 years old (depending on what kind of job we want), then society forcing us to work for it, in some way or another, or whether we like it or not, until we are very old; and then we are enslaved to whatever health problems come our way. The best any of us can do is hope that a life beyond this one will bring us better luck than this.

I don't have a firm opinion because I know so little about it. I think it's a worldview that says that life is meaningless and that the earth would be better off if mankind were wiped out altogether. If that's true, it's a rather suffocating way to think because it's so one-sided. We humans have polluted a lot, but have also added a lot. :D

Some people have a totally f*cked up sense of morality that tells them to murder people when they burn a book. But this does not mean that morality is subjective. I am convinced that a morality which values human life is the ultimate morality. Hence I'm not a nihilist.

It's mostly an intense belief in the meaninglessness of everything. That's what it amounts to. I'm not sure what the belief that the universe would be better off without man would be.

This thread would probably be less painful to read if people made it clear which kind of nihilism (epistemological, existential, moral, metaethical, metaphysical, etc) they're talking about.

Systems of morality are developed not because it is the default state of morality, but because it is an emergent order, an artificial social construct which has proven useful to human survival.

I think of it as an overly misused term, a word bandied about by silly little mummy's boys who've read Nietzsche thinking he was one of the pillars of the branch of nihilism when he was probably quite the opposite. =]

Not piss off as much as annoy, which either is actually pretty hard to do.

Mostly just jumped on a way to nix him out of threads and never looked back.

I think that anyone who is not a nihilist is told by his/her mummy about a magic space sugar daddy... Or they believe that their life is ultimately essential to humanity, or they believe our species will never go extinct. Also pillars of the branch of nihilism lol? Its more like believing in the philosophy like anything else I would like you to ellaborate what makes a nihilist or "pseudo-nihilist" as you imply any different.

airshocker

to be brutally honest. I sometimes feel this way as well. What is the justification for nihilist to continue to exist if everything around you has no meaning or value to it? That isn't a rhetorical question, if anyone who subscribes to this philosophy would care to answer i'd be interested in hearing it.

Not in favor of moral / epistemological / metaphysical nihilism. Through logical thinking / deduction one can turn into either of these nihilist types, but since logic itself is finite and starts from a point, he / she's basically starting from a point to conclude that there is no point / object etc. I wonder if they feel safe and sound with this internal logical fallacy...axiomatically, you gotta start from somewhere, and so they have, by assuming they never started from anywhere nor will - see where this is going? Existential nihilism, that I can buy, and I find it in no way associated with depression or anything, unless the person has turned to e.n. to seek comfort because of his life misfortunes. Still I don't find that 100% correct in terms of logic. I'd believe more that the purpose / meaning of life IN THE LONG RUN is unknown and probably shall remain unknown as I don't see the human mind capable of grasping anything of the sort. In the short run, I find (my) life to be pretty meaningful to me and to others.

I've had multiple episodes of going close to the brink. Although I am a pretty messed up person in terms of mental stability, I suspect I am far from the only one.
