Question posed above. Obviously you (hopefully) won't be naming big, well known bands from different genres like Metallica, Nirvana, Rammstein or The Cure, because it's clear these bands are quite well rated already. Hell, my own personal favourite band, Children of Bodom, I won't be naming, because they're one of the biggest acts for melodic death metal (though they'd more be a hybrid of thrash, power and melodic death metal in reality). Name as many as you like, but as i said don't be naming "big" bands. Some criminally underrated bands for me would be:

Kalmah (very talented melodic death metal group)

Thrice (American progressive rock band)

The Agony Scene (hardcore metal band)

Arch Enemy (another very talented death metal band)

Still Remains (American metalcore band).

The Beta Band by a long shot. They should have been massive but vanished into a world obsessed with music sales.

When I saw NIN last year, Saul Williams (rap with a little rock, very political) opened.  He was amazing. Seriously, check him out (This is coming from a huge rock fan)

Good. They deserve it. And aren't NIN a huge act, to the above poster? Or are you saying they have more talent then they're given credit for?

Katatonia and Incubus for me. Incubus get lots of play, but I get the feeling most people don't think of them as great musicians, which they are. Katatonia should be much more known. The band is amazing!

Like I said, I know their popular BUT I don't think many people give them credit for being amazing musicians. Mike Einziger is one of my fav guitarists!

I'd agree with the above breaking benjamin statement. I also think that opeth doesn't get enough play. But my favorite "unknown" band has to be katatonia. really, most metal bands don't get much credit.

Opeth is a God in the metal genre. They aren't underrated so much as they aren't for everyone. Katatonia should be alot more well-known seeing as how popular Tool is, and Katatonia is sooo much better than Tool....

  1. Alice in Chains-They don't get enough recognition in my opinion.
  2. The Kenny Wayne Shephard Band-Amazing blues band, that is fairly new, but nobody seems to have heard of them.
  3. The Band-Yet another very old band, and they aren't talked about enough. Plus they rock.

54.40, an amazing band from Vancouver, Canada. They're pretty big in BC, but surprisingly they never made it big. I think Hootie and the Blowfish covered one of their songs and it did really well. It was the song "I Go Blind."

How so? The Kenny Wayne Shephard Band is very underrated. Their first cd was released when their guitarist was 16,and when I heard it, it blew me away. Most of my friends have never even heard of them, or The Band. Same can be said with most of the people on here.

Doesn't matter about people here....Those bands are known in the world. The Band was rather big when they existed. Yeah, after a time they will lose their popularity due to inactivity....but they were never underrated.

Nah...while Nirvana made grunge popular the other bands achieved success as well. Alice in Chains may not have been as mainstream as Nirvana but that doesn't make them underrated.

In my country (The Netherlands) i'd say:
The Strokes
The Hives
Muse
Stereophonics

And a lot of other good bands. Dutch people have a dumb taste of music.

Just because they've made it on mainsteam radio, doesn't rule out the fact that they are underrated. If that's the case, than the only underrated bands would be local bands, that haven't made it.

Exactly....any band that has exposure and is played by the media is no longer underrated. The popularity of bands will, of course, vary...but they can in no way be truly underrated.

Katatonia is not better than Tool.  Both are decent, but Tool is better.  I'm not gonna argue music theory here, so I'll leave it at that.

Bands that I think are underrated:
Genghis Tron (they're starting to get bigger)
Windir (now defunct due to Valfar's death, they were overshadowed by Darkthrone and Emperor and Mayhem and so forth)
Boards of Canada (extremely mellow music,  it's amazing when mixed with hallucinogens)
Cynic, Aghora,  and Gordian Knot (all three  took progressive metal in a new direction)
The Stooges (the original crazy frontman, Iggy Pop)
Weather Report (awesome Jazz Fusion)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (more awesome Jazz Fusion)

I agree with that.  Especially with Finntroll.  I love them.  I will add Therion, Melecesh and Amon Amarth to the metal bands.

No doubt more than half the bands I listen to in my opinion. But everybody can't be in the spotlight at once and a band being recognized by a large segment of the general populace as "great" is not something I really need and it's not something that every band shoots for.

Any band who got MTV coverage is disqualified.  Including Modest Mouse.
