I think the crust is the most important part. Too crunchy of a crust and the whole pizza is ruined. And if the crust is too soft, the pizza feels floppy and weak,

I'd agree with the crust. No sense in building on something that isnt fit to eat.

The crust is important, and I think really the sauce and crust are equally important, but I voted sauce, because a bad sauce can make you puke.

Crust is important, but so is the cheese. A good crust on a pizza won't matter much if the cheese ends up tasting too salty, or too rubbery.

Sauce. A few years ago in my cooking class, we made a nice looking pizza. It looked great and was made well, but when we took a bite, we could immediately tell we used awful sauce. That ruined the whole thing..

The sauce, because it gives the pizza most of its flavor (besides the toppings).

Cheese. Otherwise you might as well just eat breadsticks dipped in sauce.

The cheese is essential, and the crust to finish off. And the perfect amount of sauce to add flavor. All of these work in perfect unison.

Each part is important but I'd have to go with the cheese on this one.

I don't think you can really determine this. If any one part of it is bad, the entire pizza is bad.

The crust is what technically makes a pizza, a pizza.

pizza without cheese = bad pizza

pizza without sauce = bad pizza

pizza without crust = it's not even a pizza, it's just a pile of cheese and sauce. While not having cheese and sauce is bad, without crust, you don't even have a pizza!

So therefore, crust is the most essential of the three.

Sauce or crust. Anyone from the Northeastern US will tell you this. Crust matters more if you're from Northern NJ or NYC due to the excellent water in the doughs and as you head west sauce becomes more important. Two things everyone must know though, there is no good pizza south of Maryland or west of Chicago, there just isn't.

No offense Southeast, Southwest, and West Coast but your pizza is terrible.

I'd agree with the crust. No sense in building on something that isnt fit to eat.-Fromage-
Agreed. You need to start somewhere. If someone saw you smearing sauce over the counter and throwing toppings on that counter, people would look at you funny. On the other hand, if you simply have a pizza crust underneath, people will ask when it will be done.

Toppings for sure. I rarely eat a pizza without at least 3-4 toppings on it.

You can make a pizza without toppings, and you can make it without sauce (white pizzas), heck, you can even technically make it without the stereotypical crust, like pita pizzas, etc., but I've never seen a pizza without cheese.

Cheese is essential. Have you ever eaten a pizza without cheese?

I used to take the cheese off my pizza and eat the crust first then eat the cheese separately. Does that count?...:P

the crust. a good sauce is easy to make, just a simple tomato sauce. but a good crust is really tricky and most people dont do it right. they make it too crunchy which i really hate. i like it moist and soft and quiet thin too.

Every part of the pizza if done incorrectly will mess up the entire pizza. But the most important part imo is the topping.

The cheese makes or breaks it for me. I've had french bread pizza that I'd still call great just because of the cheese.

The sauce is usually makes or breaks it. When a pizza is bad it's usually because of the sauce. It's kind of hard to **** up cheese or most of the typical pizza toppings, although of course it can be done.

I voted sauce but really there isn't one part of the pizza that is "essential" in my eyes. Because I can't choose just one, they're all needed!

The cheese gets my vote. I can enjoy a plain cheese pizza and unless I am hungry I usually won't finish the crust.

Mmmm cheese... ...but crust is equally as important, but then so is the sauce, as all 3 are the basics to make a pizza - an actual PIZZA! I want pizza now, for breakfast. xD

Crust is important, but so is the cheese. A good crust on a pizza won't matter much if the cheese ends up tasting too salty, or too rubbery.

But what if it is one of those really soggy ones, or it sticks out straight like a piece of cardboard?
