Wait we held off the British, are you talking bad about the brits or USA?
Â
i wouldnt say you held the british/canadians off seeing how we walked into and ransack any place in america that was worth the trouble and the huge force america sent was held off by a much smaller candian force. the reason it ended is that the brits had worthy countrys to fight.
So you don't like America? We did hold you guys off, Baltimore harbor? Although its not like we actually crushed you or destroyed England itself. In the Revolutionary war and 1812 we beat the British, thats it. Oh well, and I don't see how it was the worst military defeat in history by any means. I'm not being a patriotic redneck or anything but don't act like Britain beat the US or anything, and don't call us unworthy were a big superpower now.
Ummm, at the time that the War of 1812 was fought, wasn't the statement The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire true? I mean, weren't the the largest empire in the history of human civilization? The Battle of Bladensburg, yeah the US Army got its butt handed to it; however, in 3 weeks the Battle of Northpoint saw a complete reversal with the british failing to take Ft. Mchenry, and the british force sent to take Baltimore being turned by by a force largely consisting of militia.

Well it wasn't the worst defeat in history, plus the British didn't actually take over USA.

The Spartans didn't actually win the battle, its just that they killed so many Persians and held them off so long.
They won the Greco-Persian War thoughi am American, but their were A LOT of rev. wars... i mean a lot.
grafkhun
I agree there have been tons of "revolutions" in the world, but none that I can think of have been deemed "the" Rev. War besides the one formentioned.Â
When Hitler invaded Poland... they fell in 3 daysSmellyraccoon
Yeah but they surendured, Boudica outnumbered the Romans 20 to 1 and thought they would win, Poland didn't have to much of a military and gave up, wisely.

Well, the Poles were pretty much devestated militarily. I've heard some say that the Poles might have held the Germans or the Soviets back if they only had to face one or the other. The goal was to hold out long enough for Britain and France to come to their aid.. The goal was to hold out long enough for Britain and France to come to their aid.

Which wasn't coming. Or am I thinking of Finland in terms of aid against the Russians?

A little bit of both, remember, the Brits and the French actually did go to war with Germany because they had treaties of alliance signed with Poland. It was simply the fact that the brits and the french were so unprepared that they were not ready to fight when they were needed.
The Finns found themselves facing the soviet army, and ended up siding with the Germans because they knew that it was hopeless to expect help from any of the allies, as none would risk losing the Soviets as allies. Also, you'll notice the interesting complication that the British and French were willing to go to war with Germany because of their treaties with Poland; however, they never declared war on the Soviet Union.
My three would go to The Battle of Cannae, The Battle of Hastings, and The Battle of Agincourt. I'm counting both the importance of the battle (and what followed) and the actual battle's decisiveness.Â
For the Japanese Navy: Battle of Noryang during Imjin War. That final naval battle bettween Korea and Japan dwarfs The Battle of Trafalgar.
Korean Admiral Yi Soon-Shin was gave the Japanese a good beating!

Vietnam...........and possibley the franco-prussian war......just for frances stupidy in going ahead with it.bob_geldof221
60000 Americans died.... MILLIONS of North Vietnamese died. We didn't win but it wasn't the worst military defeat in history.
Recently? Vietnam.f15srcool
We only lost 60000 compared to the millions of Narth Vietnamese. They took 50000 casualties in the Tet offensive while we only took 2000.

Yeah, the South Vietnamese and the US Military won every battle again the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong, yet we lost the war due to politics back home. I hope the same thing won't happen again.
The war between Finland and Russia was only between those two contries I thought. Called the Winter War. Finland cleand up on the battlefeild but somehow Russia managed to gain part of it's economy and land. The fact that Russia didn't beat Finland on the battlefeild made Hitler think the Russians were incompotent and decided to break his Non-agression pact With Russia and Invade. Mikey132It continued on with The Continuation War.GB declared war on Finland in December 1941, the US remained out of it, and Germany agreed to supply them with equipment.

Actually, Hitler had been planning to invade the USSR since the very beginning, even after they signed their secret treaty. Communists were probably Hitler's most hated people besides the Jews.
actually the Austro-prussian war provoked by Bismarck was pretty funny, well how it started and the diplomacy behind it. but i still think the Crimean war (everyone pwned themselves). also the Bay of Pigs... what was US thinking?grafkhun
^God, I'm glad that D-Day didn't end up like Bay of Pigs.
Also for those who celebrate Cinco-de-Mayo: the Battle of Puebla...what was France thinking when they invaded Mexico...Mexico of all places?
Happy Cinco-de-Mayo!
